09 - Talk
"Hey, uh, can we talk?"
Jasper's voice behind me took me by surprise and my right hand tightened around the handle of the scalpel, completely shielding the shiny weapon from my brother's sight. With my back to him, I slyly slid the medical tool into the pocket of my gray, zip-up hoodie, deep enough inside so it wouldn't potentially fall out at any given point or be seen.
"Yeah, what's up?" I asked him and spun around to face him, casually zipping the jacket halfway up.
Everything needed to be secured on my body before I began my plan to escape Mount Weather. If only I could get my hands on a backpack or something, but the bag would only draw attention to myself from the others and I couldn't risk something like that. In order for the plan to work, no one could suspect anything, otherwise Dante would stop me and I'd never be able to go after Bellamy.
My eyes landed on my brother's awkward stance at the foot of the bunk beds, accidentally blocking me between the two beds and the wall, scratching the back of his neck.
"Um..." He refused to meet my gaze, dark eyes darted from side to side until they landed on the floor by his sneakers.
His sudden lack of ability to speak sent a wave of fear through my body, paranoid he somehow learned the truth and came to talk me out of it. My heart pounded in my ears until the chatter in the room was drowned out. My hands unknowingly clenched down by my sides, growing clammy with every passing second of silence between us. Miller and Harper were sworn to secrecy. They knew how important this escape was to not only us, but for the rest of our people. I had to do this. I had to find everyone that didn't make it here to Mount Weather with us.
Jasper nervously glanced over his shoulder at our fellow people in the large room before he stepped closer. "How do I, uh--" He dropped his voice to a low whisper. "How do I talk to Maya?"
The breath I held slowly released through my parted lips at his innocent question. His awkwardness wasn't due to finding out I planned to escape Mount Weather tonight, but because he had a crush on Maya. He never suspected anything.
"You already talk to her," I reminded him with a knowing grin, feeling myself grow calm.
"No. No, I know," he said and shook his head. "I just, uh-- I really like her and I don't, uh..." Jasper trailed off while his cheeks blazed bright red. His eyes peeked down at me through his eyelashes before he added, "I don't know how to talk to her."
"Aw, Jazz," I quietly gushed over his nervousness about the entire situation. I stepped closer to him and gently patted his shoulder. "You don't have to stress about it. Just be yourself. She already likes you for who you are."
"But, I don't know how," Jasper stressed to me, frowning. "I- I mean, every time I try to say something to her, I either trip over my words or just forget how to speak. It's like she has some kind of spell on me."
My hand returned to his shoulder and softly squeezed it. "I promise you, it's not a spell. You just like her and it's completely normal when you have a crush on someone."
"Did you ever feel this way about Bellamy?" The question flew off of my brother's lips before he could fully think them through and his eyes widened once he realized his mistake. "Shit! I didn't mean to bring him up. I'm sorry--"
"No, it's okay," I interjected with a look of surprise written on my facial features.
I paused for a few seconds to take in his question and willed myself not to get upset at the thought of Bellamy not being here with all of us like he should be. That's why I had to escape this place. Nothing would stop me from finding him-- from finding everyone.
I cleared my throat and threw on an easygoing smile, solely to make my brother feel better about asking me such a question. "Actually, I mainly just wanted to punch him."
Jasper cracked a small smile.
"Just like punch him all the time. He was kind of a dick," I told him, subconsciously thinking back to all of my memories with him.
"Was?" Jasper raised an eyebrow with a questioning look.
My lips formed a smile as a laugh slipped past them. "Okay, okay." I held my hands up in surrender and stepped around him to stand at the end of the bunk bed. "He will always be a dick, but, um..." my voice trailed off a bit from the way I tried to fight off another smile and the redness in my cheeks. I met Jasper's gaze. "He had his moments. He wasn't all bad. I was just the only one that ever saw them."
A mixture of emotions swirled inside of my body over the thought and memories of Bellamy. My heart ached for him more than ever. Despite him being a major ass most of the time, he truly did have a heart of gold beneath his hard exterior. I felt honored when I was able to see that side of him.
I lightly shook my head to clear my mind of him. My arm wrapped around Jasper's back as I began to lead him toward the hallway outside of the room. "Okay, look. Maya isn't one of those girls you have to impress all the time. She's much more simple than that and, take my word for it, Jazz, she likes you, too."
Jasper broke out in a large grin as we left the room, too happy with the words I told him to notice the way I shared a look with Harper and Miller before we rounded the corner. I hated using my brother as a way to escape, but this conversation lead to a perfect opportunity for me. I needed a way to talk to Maya today without it being completely out of the blue. This would work.
"How do you know?" He asked, draping his arm around my shoulders. "She probably thinks I'm crazy or something."
I followed his lead to the way to the mess hall, smiling at the few people we passed in the halls, hoping to stay on the people of Mount Weather's good side. Everyone here was more favorable to me than they were to Clarke and I needed that advantage.
"Trust me, she doesn't think you're crazy."
"You don't know that. She could!"
"No, she doesn't," I reassured him with a squeeze around his back. "Trust me about that. I'm a girl. I know these kinds of things and I know she likes you back. You two are just so shy around each other. Give it some time."
Jasper tilted his head back on his shoulders and released a deep sigh. He was so stressed about his crush on Maya, something so normal for a regular teenager, yet still quiet foreign for people like us who lived in space for all their life, surrounded by the same people-- well, except for me. All I ever saw was the same four walls every day, aside from a few guards.
"Come on." I grabbed a fistful of his long sleeve shirt and led him into the library, grinning when I spotted Maya sitting by herself in a corner with a book in her hands. I winked at Jasper over my shoulder before we reached her. "Hey, Maya."
Jasper swatted my hand off of his shirt before she could lift her eyes away from her book. Her gaze landed on me first in front of her and then drifted to my brother just behind me with a smile creeping on her lips. I smirked at her response. These two were so head over heels for each other. If I wasn't leaving tonight, I would surely stick around and play matchmaker with them. Jasper deserved to be happy.
"Hey," Maya breathed, blushing. She lowered the book to her lap after she slid her bookmark in place.
"So, my brother and I were talking earlier and--"
"Hey, Maya!" Harper's voice shouted above mine from across the room, ceasing our conversation before it could even start.
I closed my mouth in surprise and partially frowned at Maya while the three of us looked toward the entrance of the library where Harper hurriedly rushed over to us. She barely glanced at Jasper or me when she approached us, solely focused on Maya in her chair. A few other people in the library shot annoyed looks toward Harper.
"Uh, hi, Harper." Maya shifted in her seat, embarrassed by the loud shouting in such a quiet place.
Harper stood a few feet away. "On our way out of quarantine, you were saying how there was someone still left, right?"
Maya nodded.
An intrigued look crossed my face at the news, purposely acting like I had no idea about the information. The three of us decided our best bet to get to Fox would be if Harper casually brought up the information instead of having me ask about it. Harper was simply curious after being in quarantine for so long. No one was bound to question it. Dante would assume I overheard the news between Maya and her, and chose to spontaneously act upon it.
"I was just wondering who it was. Wren said some of didn't make it, but who is the other person who did?" Harper inquired, innocently. Her face was soft and calm, a perfect appearance to fly under the radar.
"Uh, Fox," Maya answered and glanced at the three of us.
I mouth fell open. I took a small step forward. "Wait. Fox is down there by herself?"
Maya nodded again.
My hand fell over my heart while I let my face fall slightly. "Is there any way I could go see her? She's one of the youngest out of all of us. She must be so scared."
"She's being released in the morning," Maya responded.
"I didn't know Fox made it," Jasper quietly murmured to himself.
I looked at him beside me with a concerned look. Maya seemed to be a sympathetic person. If I could play into her emotions enough, she was bound to cave.
"We had to make sure it was safe for her to leave quarantine, but Dr. Tsing said this morning she would be safe to be released tomorrow morning," Maya shared with us. Her eyes wavered as she added, "She hasn't really spoken to any of us since she's woken up."
I sat down in the chair closest to Maya and reached to grab her hand, eyes wide with concern for my younger friend. "Maya, please. Is there any way I could go see her? She must be so terrified and I think if she saw me and I told her everything was okay, she would open up to you guys more."
Maya's mouth opened and then closed. Her lips pressed together after a few seconds and she glanced around the library to make sure no one was eavesdropping on our conversation. She leaned off of the edge of her chair. "I could probably get you down there for a few minutes."
A look of hope flashed on my facial features. I nodded twice in encouragement.
Jasper placed his hand on my shoulder. "After we saw how Clarke and Wren reacted, it would probably be best if Wren did go down there," he backed me up, unaware of my true intentions.
I willed myself not to react to his words. I was not allowed to show any signs of guilt, no matter how much I knew Jasper would hate me once he found out I used him to escape. My original plan was to not use my brother in my attempt, yet there seemed to be no way around it. I had my way into level three. Now, I just had to escape from Maya's sight to the restricted area down the hallway.
I could do this. I was going to find Bellamy.

Oh, hey there. Hi, how's it going? Sorry it's been fifteen million years since I've updated this story. That's definitely my bad, but I'm going to try to fix that by updating it now and writing the next chapter asap.
This chapter honestly isn't that great. I, also, didn't proofread it in the slightest and that's when I usually add things to the chapter or whatever, but I wanted to post it, so I ended up just skipping over that part. The next chapter is going to be ten times better, so it's okay. That's the chapter that everyone cares about anyways.
The next chapter is the escape and, boy, am I EXCITED to write it. I've been looking forward to this for a while now.
Question: How do you think Wren will get away from Maya when they are down in quarantine?
So, yeah!
