#1 Will's Birthday
~Updated Saturday, 13th June 2015.
This is a oneshot set in the Dauntless compound, during initiation. I probably made some timeline mistakes, but ignore them for now.
All rights go to Veronica Roth.
Tris
I wake up to Christina's face hovering over mine, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
'Tris?' Her fingers dig into my shoulders, and I wince.
'I'm awake,' I grunt, rubbing my eyes and glancing at my watch as Christina takes her hands away.
'At 6:00 am,' I add, disbelief coloring my voice. 'On our day off. Christina, there had better be a good reason for this. Do you have any idea how much I ache from my fight yesterday?'
She sets her jaw stubbornly, refusing to look even slightly apologetic.
'It's Will's birthday,' she says. 'And you are going to help me get him some of his favorite foods from the kitchen. He loves every kind of Dauntless cake except cheesecake, it reminds him of when-'
She pauses and giggles. 'Wait, I promised I wouldn't tell anyone about that. Never mind. Anyway, we're going to first do some shopping, then raid the kitchens, and then-'
'Whoa, whoa, whoa,' I interrupt. 'Of course I'll help you. Just one thing.'
Relief and wariness mix on her expression.'What?'
'Can't we buy the cake instead of stealing it?' Some Abnegation part of me is prodding my conscience.
Christina rolls her eyes like she can tell. 'In case you've forgotten, I came from Candor. We aren't real big on stuff like stealing there either, as you might remember. But we're training to become Dauntless now. Both of us. So forget about Abnegation for now, and help me.'
When I still look uncertain, she sighs heavily. 'It's Will's birthday. And you don't get Dauntless cake anywhere except the kitchens. Please?'
'Okay, okay.' I push myself to my feet and almost fall down again but Christina steadies me.
'I hope you won't do that in the kitchens,' she says. 'We'll need stealth, subtlety.' She eyes me. 'You don't seem real stealthy to me.'
I shove her and she shoves me back-gently, thank God, or I would've toppled over for sure. We leave the dorm still giggling.
Just as we slip out of the kitchen door, I trip, knock Christina over and sit down on the floor amidst a rainfall of cake mix packets.
I cover my face with my hands and groan, escaping the murderous look my best friend is sure to be giving me.
Everyone in the kitchen immediately turns to stare at us and I take my hands off my face to stare back. They don't seem all that surprised, actually. Most of them turn back to their work, shaking their heads and grinning slightly, except one guy and a girl who I assume baked the cakes we have stuffed in our backpacks. Christina insisted we take them like we were on some kind of mission or something. But they have been useful.
Now the guy and girl march over to us, simultaneously crossing their arms across their chests and giving us ferocious glares. Christina and I get up, bruised and miserable, and study the opposite walls. I catch a cook's eye and he winks. I quickly look away, for some reason thinking of Four.
'Well?' The girl demands. 'No explanation?'
Christina looks at her grudgingly. 'It's my boyfriend's birthday today?' She says.
The girl's mouth twitches only slightly. 'We worked hard to bake those cakes. We slaved away at the ovens. We poured our sweat and blood-something like that, anyway-into the work. We-'
'Okay, now you're exaggerating,' the guy interjects. 'They're just a few in a batch.' He doesn't look so angry anymore, although he is slightly annoyed, I can tell.
'Also, you can have them back if there's sweat and blood in them,' Christina puts in. 'I'm pretty sure Will doesn't like that flavor either.'
This time both the guy and the girl smile.
Taking advantage of their momentary amusement, I add,'If you let us get away with it, you're invited to the party tonight, at Shauna's.'
'Shauna? The eighteen year old one who's dating Zeke Pedrad or the two year old one who eats nothing except packets of sprinkles for breakfast?' The guy asks.
'Um...the eighteen year old one,' I answer. I don't even know how Christina persuaded Shauna, but her parties are legendary. Tonight is going to rock. Hopefully. I think of the games of Dare, and bite my lip worriedly.
The two don't seem to be worried about that. They high five each other, their eyes lighting up.
'You're on,' they both say.
'And you can have a few more, too,' the girl says nicely. Shauna's parties must be even better than I heard.
'Happy birthday!' Christina, Uriah, Marlene and I all scream as Will nears the table. Marlene saw us with all the cakes and immediately agreed to help us, and Uriah was happy enough too. We couldn't convince Lynn, but she did say she'd come to the party at night. Of course, that might just be because of how great Shauna's parties are, but it's a start.
Will stares as he comes nearer, seeing the cakes with the the candles' glow lighting them up, the special Erudite fizzy drinks (I don't know how Zoë and Jake, the cooks, managed to get them for us) and snacks they quickly threw together for us after a little more elaborating of what the party would be like. Then he starts to smile. He grins at me, smiles nicely at Uriah and Marlene, but saves the biggest smile for Christina. 'I knew you'd remember,' he announces.
Christina sticks out her tongue at him. 'No, you did not! It was a total surprise, wasn't it, Mr Smarta-'
She is interrupted when he kisses her, and I look away, clearing my throat loudly. Too sloppy for my taste. Uriah and Marlene both grin at my discomfort.
'Cool down, you two!' Uriah shouts. 'It's time for cake!'
They break apart and Christina grins at me, wide enough for me to see all her teeth.
'Yeah, let's eat,' Will agrees. That's the best part.'
I look at my friends' laughing faces, at the memories this morning has created, and find I don't quite agree.
