Prologue

In my Fathers kingdom, anyone born with dark features is put to death, as they are thought to be evil. Children of the devil.

Dark hair. Dead.

Dark skin. Dead.

Dark eyes. Dead.

As a result, there is nothing dark in my fathers kingdom. Everything is light. The people, the sky, the houses, everything. Even the horses are light. (The dark ones are put to death as well)

My fathers name is Peter Kingmund, and he is in fact a King. My mothers name is Marie and she is the fair queen of our kingdom.

I am not an only child, and I in fact have many brothers and sisters. For oldest to youngest it goes Amber, Sierra, Samuel, Joshua, my twin brother Jonathan, me, Phoenix and his twin Anastasia.

My name, for that matter is Kaitland. I am sixth in line for the throne (my brother coming before me) and like my siblings I have never seen anything dark.

My father always said that darkness was an evil thing, and wherever there was darkness, there was evil. Thrus, anything having to do with the color black, or anything dark was banished from the kingdom and was not allowed.

Which leads to forest on the edge of my fathers kingdom. As everything in the forest is dark, a law was passed saying anyone who entered shall be forever banished and forever forgotten. Everyone else was forbidden from entering.

I have never seen or know anyone who has entered. However there is a legend of a man who went in.

It goes that there once was man named Edwin who happened to be dark skin. He's the reason why the law was passed. It's said that Edwin was insane, crazy. A lunatic.

He didn't start out evil through. He became evil slowly. You see, Edwin's family lived near the dark forest. And everyday, Edwin would pass it. According to legend, each time he passed it, he became more and more evil. Which lead to him killing his adopted sister, who was light skinned.

When my grandfather found out, he was furious. He ordered that everyone dark skinned shall be killed or banished. Anyone found with dark objects where to be killed as well.

Edwin had not heard of the law when it was passed. When he got home, he found that his family was dead. Knowing that the guards were coming for him next, Edwin ran to where he knew no one would find him. The dark forest.

That's where the law came from. That's why no one allowed in there.

Everyone in the kingdom has heard the story of Edwin and why anything dark was destroyed.

My father said that the light would protect us, and that the darkness would not get to us. As long as we stayed away from the forest, we would be safe.

Mother said that it was understandable that we feared the dark, as it was something to be feared. Amber claimed that there was nothing to fear, but we all knew she feared it as well. We all did. Even Samuel, Joshua, Jonathan, Phoenix feared it.

I feared it less than my siblings did, as I soon found out that everything stayed the same in the dark, and it did at day. I even liked it when it was dark, as it was something new. However, I never told them this. I feared that they would treat me like an outcast.

So I never mentioned it, and I pretend that I feared everything dark, when in reality I didn't. I "feared" the night, dark rooms, people with dark features, and anything else like that.

Amber claims that anyone who likes the dark should be killed, just like the people with dark features, as their just as bad. So I never said.

And to this day, I have lived in fear that my family would find me out.

Until Sierras birthday came around.
