Chapter 5

  "Where's Smokerunner?"
"He should be back by now..."
Ravenstrike listened to the scared murmurs of his Clanmates. He knew by now the gray tom would be either underground or being eaten away by crows. His yellow eyes were calm and for once he was glad no one paid much attention to him. Self-consciously the tom licked at his shoulder where a clawmark scored down the side.
"Hey, Ravenstrike, are you okay?"
The voice made Ravenstrike jump.
The black tom turned to look at Crystalflight.
"Yes, why do you ask?"
"Your pelt. Clawmarks are all over it. Maybe you should go see Dewwren."
Ravenstrike could see worry sparkling in the soft she-cat's amber eyes.
"I'll go do that now. It's okay, Crystalflight." The black warrior gave the ginger-and-white she-cat a lick on the cheek comfortingly before heading to where RushClan's medicine den was.
"Dewre-" Ravenstrike cut off his words as he heard mumbles coming from the sleeping but shaking form of the silver-tan tom.
"A bird of darkness will swoop from above. Be careful of who they trust, Dust will settle and the bird of darkness will take the course of fate." The old medicine cat was mumbling the words repeatedly.
Carefully, feeling uncomfortable, Ravenstrike gently shook the tom's shoulder. Almost-blind yellow eyes snapped open in seconds and the skinny tom jumped up with a hiss.
"Dewwren! It's okay, it's just me, Ravenstrike."
"Ravenstrike?" Now Dewwren's voice sounded wary. He took a moment before continuing. "What do you need?"
"I came to get these wounds checked." Thoughts rushed through Ravenstrike's head before he finished. "I had an unfriendly encounter with some rouges."
He knew it wasn't fully true, but Dewwren bought it. The medicine cat checked over Ravenstrike, who stood still with only slight twitches of his longfurred tail.
"No infection." The skinny tom seemed to be talking more to himself than Ravenstrike as he headed to the further end of the small dirt den and came back out with a wad of cobwebs and began to dress the warrior's wounds.
As the black warrior exited the den he could here mumbling from Dewwren but couldn't make out words. He had a hunch about what it was though. The tom's mumbling words rang in his head.
"A bird of darkness will swoop from above. Be careful of who they trust, Dust will settle and the bird of darkness will take the course of fate."
Ravenstrike shook off his worry. He was a warrior, not a medicine cat, and it wasn't his job to decipher messages from ghosts. The large black tom looked out to the entrance of
camp, wondering when Dust planned to try and take over and rid RushCpan
of its bad leadership.
'It does matter when. No matter when it is, I'll stand next to him.'
