The kids were hiding up in the mountains. They were scared, not knowing what was happening down in town.

"But our families. What about them?" Rudy said. "We gotta stay up here and hide awhile. To stay safe" Matthew said to Rudy. They couldn't go back in town, not with all the chaos. Jack was putting twigs in a nearby fire to keep it lit. Rudy sighed. "I just wanna go home. If I hide, they'll never find me."

"This is bullshit you know" Megan spouted. "How long do you think we can survive up here on olives and Rice Krispies?" "What else can we do Megan?" Aard said to her. They only had two options. Stay in the mountains, or go back into town.

"As Calumet Student Body President, I say that we give ourselves up" Megan suggested. "I agree. We can't stay-" "Sit down Rudy" Jack said to him. "You're not going anywhere. It's too dangerous to go into town." "I say we vote on it" Megan fired back at him. "No" Jack repeated. "This isn't the big game, Mr. Quarterback. He can go wherever he wants" Megan said, getting angry now. Jack stood up, walking near Megan.

"No" he said for a third time. "You're such an asshole Jack, you know that?" Megan said to him, almost shouting. Jack had enough of her. "You wanna go so bad!?" He said, grabbing a duffel bag and giving it to her, turning her around and pushing her off. "There, take your shit and go!" Then Jack looked at the others. "That goes for the rest of you. This is your chance so get walking. It is World War III down there. People are being beat, taken away from their families, and being killed" Jack kneeled down close to the fire.

"But Jack, what about your family? Huh?" Rudy said. Jack sighed. "I don't know. But I do know something. I'm alive. And I'm staying here. That's what they'd want for me, and that's what your families would want for you. Not to be gunned down on the side of a street. You think your so smart, man. But you're just a bunch of scared kids" Jack said. "What do you think you are?" Megan asked. Jack looked to the ground. "Alone, I guess" He turned around to face the view, away from the others.

Danny came up behind him. "No, you're not." Jack turned to him, and Danny opened his arms up. The two brothers hugged each other. Matthew then came over. "I'm with you too." Jack nodded, looking over at Aard, Rudy, and Megan. They were stuck on deciding what to do. "Are you staying, or going?" Jack asked. They didn't say anything, wanting to stay. "Alright. But if you stay, you do exactly as I say, when I say. Okay?" Jack told the three. They all nodded. "Come on over and get warm" Jack said. They all came over. Jack and Megan hugged each other. "I'm sorry" she told him. "Me too Meg" Jack said, pulling away.

They all huddled up.

"Now listen. Me and Danny have been coming up to these mountains with our dad all of our lives. We can hunt, fish, we can stay up here a long long time" Jack said. "How long Jack?" Aard asked. Then planes flew by them.

"Until we don't here that no more" Jack replied.

Jack, Danny, and Matthew were out hunting. They managing to shoot down a deer, and headed over to its corps.

Jack pulled out a knife and started cutting in around the chest. "What are you doing?" Matthew asked. "This is your first time isn't it?" Jack asked. Matthew nodded in response. Jack poured some of the deers blood into a small cup. "You gotta drink if it's your first. We did" Danny said to him. "What's it taste like?" Matthew asked curiously. "It's not too bad. It's kinda salty, like a steak, or when you get a nose bleed" Danny replied. "You got to Matty, it's the spirit of the deer" Jack said, handing Matthew the cup.

He took the cup and started chugging it down. He finished, his mouth almost covered in the deers blood. Jack smiled proudly. "Alright man, you did it." "His blood is yours now. You know my dad told me that once you drink it, there'll be something different about you. Always" Danny said. Matthew smiled. It wasn't that bad after all.

"Wasn't that bad" Matthew continued smiling.

Later came nighttime, and everyone at camp knew that they couldn't hold out much longer by staying in the woods. So Jack, Danny, and Matthew agreed to go out into the city first thing tomorrow.

Jack, Danny, and Matthew went into town. Before it was filled with kids running around having fun, people showing their stores and markets, and just a normal town. But now Russians had completely taken over the town, and were patrolling the roads and every other part. There were tons of soldiers, armored cars, canons, and tanks roaming around.

The three went into one of the small general stores, going up to the store clerk. They knew the lady working there, named Alicia.

Alicia saw them walk up to the counter. "Jack?" "Hi Ali, how's your sister?" Jack asked her. "Where did you even come from?" Alicia asked. "We've been hiding up in the mountains-" "Are you crazy? You need to leave, now" Alicia interrupted him. "We will once we find out what's going-" Jack stopped talking when he heard a guard on the second floor walking and patrolling the store. They all looked at him then back to Alicia.

"You don't understand. They know who all of you are, they're looking for you right now" Alicia whispered to them. "Who?" Jack asked. "The KGB. And the Cubans" Alicia told them. "Cubans?" Danny whispered, shocked a bit. They knew that Russians were there. But Cubans too? Why?

"Listen, have you seen my father? I tried calling him, there was no answer. I went by the station it was empty" Jack told her. Alicia sighed. "Okay. I'm gonna tell you something I'm not suppose to talk about. No one is, but..." "But what?" Jack raised an eyebrow. "They took a lot of people away. People that they thought we're gonna make trouble for them, things that they wanted, they just took them away" Alicia explained, her voice breaking a little. "To where?" Jack asked. "They call them re-education camps. There's one not too far away from here" Alicia said as the boys were about to leave. "Jack?" She said, making them stop to look back.

"I prey for you" She said.

Later

The three had gotten to the camp. They heard a Russian officer speaking into a microphone to the prisoners of war. Jack, Danny, and Matthew saw prisoners at the fenced gates. They were trying to look for Jack and Danny's father. Then they found a man that knew their father very well. "Could you find my dad? Please?" Jack said to him. The man agreed, and went to go get him.

A minute later the man came back, helping a man walk to the fenced gate. It was Jack and Danny's father.

"Boys?" Robert, or Rob Vincent, said. "Dad?" Danny started crying at the sight of his father, caged like a rabid animal. "Don't talk don't say anything. Just let me look at you" Rob said. He began to observe the two boys. The two that he called his sons. They were alive and well.

"I knew I was right. You're alive" he said, blood streaming down his nose and had a few scraps on his face. "I was tough on both of you. Did things that......made you hate me sometimes. But you understand now, don't you?" Rob said. The two nodded.

"W-What happened dad? What'd they do to you?" Jack asked. Rob shook his head slightly. "It doesn't matter. One way or another......one reason or another, we're all gone. Remember.......remember when we use to go out on the park and play? I'd put you two on the swings? You two were.....so damn little" "I remember. I remember all of it" Jack sniffled, starting to get teary eyed. "Well I'm not gonna be around to pick you two up when you fall down. You have to take care of each other now" Rob told them. "D-Don't say that. C-Come with us" Danny begged. "That's not an option Danny and you know it" Rob replied. "Where's mom dad? Where is she?" Jack asked. Rob slowly looked down, not having a good look on his face. It only meant one thing.

She was dead. They killed her.

Jack and Danny started to break down now. Rob saw this, and had to take action. They didn't have time to mourn. Not now, not ever. "You can't afford to be crying now. I don't want you two to ever cry again, you understand me? Not as long as you live" He told them. The two immediately tried to stop crying, wiping their tears away. "Where's my dad Mr. Vincent?" Matthew asked, getting more worried about him. "I don't know son. I don't know" Rob told him truthfully. "You all need to get going now. Go before they find you."

"Dad.......I love you" Jack said, about to start crying again. He didn't want to cry, but the thought of possibly losing the last part of his family made him sad inside. "I know you do son I love you too. Now go" Rob told them, then they took off.

Rob looked around, not seeing any guards. He decided to give them one final message.

"Boys!.......Avenge me! Avenge me!" He yelled out.
