Chapter 4

"Man, this sucks."

"If you say that one more time," Bucky warned, "I'm going to put your head through the wall."

Wilson scowled at him as they slowly made their way across the courtyard, one large boulder held up between the two of them.

"If you held your end of the rock," Wilson taunted, "I'd stop whining so much."

Bucky raised an eyebrow and let go with one hand as they reached the wall. Wilson grunted, struggling to hold the boulder as Bucky let go of the weight he'd been holding. Letting Wilson struggle, Bucky looked around for a smaller rock to help wedge it in place.

"God, would you help a bit?" Wilson whined, shoving the boulder into the hole in the wall.

A hole in the outside wall was certainly a problem, but Bucky didn't see why they were being forced to patch it up. Even without the watchful eye of the guards, there was no point in it. The wall dropped down a sheer cliff and aside from a very narrow ledge around the base of the wall, there was no way for them to escape. It was more of a way to taunt the prisoners if anything, Bucky assumed.

"I am helping," Bucky said.

He plucked a rock up from the ground and wedged it under the boulder. When he pulled Wilson away from it, the boulder stayed put.

"All it needed was a little support," he teased. Wilson rolled his eyes and together, they walked back across the courtyard to grab more rocks to fill in the hole.

"So," Wilson hummed, "the Bishop?"

Bucky scowled at him.

"Did you know she looked like that?" Wilson asked. Bucky's eyes narrowed. "You must have. You knew she was a woman. Everyone else thinks the Bishop is a dude."

"We've crossed paths a few times," Bucky muttered.

And they had. Quite a few times.

He would never share her name or her moves or her pattern, but he could recognize her work from anywhere. Part of him wondered why she didn't switch up her rhythm every now and then. Part of him was glad she didn't.

"You sounded real friendly with her," Wilson said. Bucky didn't grace him with a response. "Do you really know where the third egg is?"

"Why?" Bucky demanded, turning on Wilson with a new rock in hand. "You want to try and beat us both to it?"

"Call it simple curiosity," Wilson replied.

Bucky snorted. "Simple curiosity, my ass. Don't forget: I know who you work for."

"Yeah." Wilson's face darkened. "You pull another stunt like you did yesterday and I'll make sure you get put away for life."

Bucky grinned and ever so casually, he said, "You'd have to get out of here first, though, wouldn't you?"

"Why are you saying it like that?" Wilson muttered, narrowing his eyes.

With a wicked grin, Bucky shoved his rock into the wall and pulled Wilson into the washing room.

"This place is pretty heavily guarded, but not heavily enough," he said, snagging a bar of soap from an inattentive inmate. "How much did you learn in chemistry?"

"Enough," Wilson said warily. "Why?"

"Do you remember what happens when you mix soap―which is pure glycerin―" Bucky reached for a bottle of cleaning solution― "and a cleaning solution made from nitric acid?"

"You get nitroglycerin," Wilson told him.

Bucky nodded and dropped the bar of soap into the open bottle of cleaning solution.

"You get nitroglycerin," Bucky confirmed. He screwed the lid onto the cleaning solution loosely and dropped it into a nearby machine. Pressing the start button, he turned to Wilson and said, "We should run."

The resulting explosion shook the building and Wilson and Bucky braced themselves around the corner. As the lights blew out and smoke flooded the room, guards raced inside. Much to Bucky's surprise, Wilson threw the first punch on their way to duck out of the room.

They were stopped by three guards, but a quick kick to the groin disabled one of them long enough to get rid of the other two. Bucky smashed their heads together, stepping around them when they dropped to the ground like weights. Wilson tossed the third guy into a wall and with the hallway in front of them suddenly clear, they made a break for it.

Wilson made it to the end of the hall first, nearly running into a locked door. He tugged it twice before turning to Bucky with a scowl.

"It's locked, dipshit," he said. "Now what?"

With a shit-eating grin, Bucky pulled a keycard from his pocket.

"Where did you get that?" Wilson asked.

"Nyet policija," Bucky told him cheekily. He shoved Wilson aside and scanned the card.

Pushing through the door, they ducked out into the very same courtyard where they'd been fixing the outside wall. While Wilson looked for something to barricade the outside door with, Bucky watched the guard stationed overhead.

Just as predicted, the guard's phone rang. Prison riots always caused a mess, but they were predictable enough that Bucky knew they had a handful of seconds to dart across the courtyard while the guard's back was turned. Without waiting for Wilson, he ran across the courtyard and over to the restored part of the wall.

"Son of a―"

Wilson darted out after him.

"What, you brought us out here to stare at our handiwork?" Wilson grumbled, eyeing the wall.

"No," Bucky murmured, scanning the space in front of him.

When he found what he was looking for, he reached forward and pulled the little rock out of the wall. The boulder it had been holding up tipped forward and the wall crumbled around their feet.

"I brought us out here to play rock jenga," he told Wilson.

Behind them, there was a loud pounding on the barricaded door and Bucky glanced back at it. They only had a little while before the guards broke through the piece of wood Wilson had deemed an appropriate barricade, however, the sheer drop beyond the wall was not particularly inviting.

"You first," Bucky said, gesturing for Wilson to go.

"Fuck you, man," Wilson grumbled.

Very carefully, he stepped through the hole in the wall. The outside ledge was hardly as wide as his hand and his boots were thick, but he moved forward. Holding his breath, Wilson stepped out onto the outer wall ledge and slowly began to shuffle towards the end of the wall. Bucky stepped out after him.

"How far?" Wilson asked, his eyes forcefully ahead and not looking down.

"As far as it goes," Bucky told him.

They rounded the corner as the sounds of muffled gunshots echoed from the courtyard they had just been in.

Luck was on their side today, Bucky decided, because as they turned the corner, they came face to face with the helicopter pad. The wall changed from stone to a chain link and barbed wire fence that was easy to slip between.

"You know how to fly that thing?" Wilson asked, nodding towards the helicopter.

"Yeah." No. "You distract the guards."

"Guards?" Wilson echoed, looking around. "There aren't any guards."

Bucky was already heading towards the helicopter but as Wilson attempted to follow him, a door opened and two patrol guards stepped out. They spotted them immediately.

At the guards' shout, Bucky sprinted towards the helicopter. Wilson darted after him.

"What are you―Distract them!" Bucky shouted, glancing back at Wilson.

"How the fuck do I do that?" Wilson demanded. "You want me to do a little song and dance?"

"Yes!"

Wilson was not going to do that. However, he could make use of the snow around him.

"This is fucking ridiculous," he grumbled to himself.

Ducking behind a very narrow light pole, Sam bent down and scooped up a large handful of snow and pebbles. He packed them together tightly then turned around and hurled it at one of the guards. The snowball hit the man in the face and he dropped his gun as the rocks hit his eyes and the hardened snow bruised his forehead. Sam quickly made another snowball and threw it at the second guard.

With the two patrol guards now out of the way, Sam hurried across the makeshift bridge to where Barnes had the helicopter waiting. He was halfway across when he saw Barnes's eyes widen. A second later, he was airborne as a grenade was tossed at the bridge.

Luck was not on his side today, apparently. With a grunt, Sam managed to grab the very edge of the helicopter pad but his fingers were cold from the snow and quickly slipping. Reaching for what little rope remained of the makeshift swing bridge, Sam pulled himself over the ledge of the helipad.

The helicopter was in the air. Barnes had taken off and Sam was ready to curse his name.

Barnes wasn't leaving, though. As Sam prepared to either jump and try to land on the helicopter or curse Barnes to hell and back, Barnes turned the helicopter around to face the prison.

There was a momentary pause as the helicopter faced the prison. Just when Sam thought Barnes was only doing it to taunt them, he opened fire on the guards that had come out to chase them.

In the prison yard, shouts rose up but gunfire ceased, giving Sam enough time to race across the helipad to where the helicopter was hovering. With a grunt, he jumped, barely managing to land inside the helicopter before Barnes steered the helicopter away from the prison.

"What the hell was that?" Sam demanded, glancing back at the prison.

"What? Our escape?" Barnes retorted. Sam scowled. "Relax. We got out, didn't we?"

"God, you're gonna be what kills me," Sam grumbled, falling into the copilot's seat. Barnes just grinned.
