Preface and Author's Note
Redfern is the story of Arran Redfern, the youngest son of a powerful and unique family. Due to the nature of his sub-species, Arran will not stop ageing until his body reaches maturity. And so, just shy of eighteen, he finds himself recovering from his first real heartbreak and split between a prejudiced supernatural society which doesn't like vampires even when they're normal, and an oblivious human world where he can't be himself.
This is a story about belonging, politics and unconventional* love.
Hello! Welcome to my first delving into writing in prose. If you don't know me, my name is Jay and I'm a playwright by career and this is a challenge to myself to stretch my writing ability. I never thought that I would become so invested and love this story so much.
I started writing Redfern just after the Brexit referendum, wherein a very small majority of older voters decided that Britain should leave the EU with no real game plan or understanding of the issues at play. At the time I felt angry and scared and now, several years on, I still feel angry and scared. The whole thing was a shit show built on media prejudice against immigrants and a small percentage of people gaining more power and money.
In a lot of ways, Redfern is about being so young in a world that feels so chaotic and dangerous that the rest of your life feels vast and unending and you feel insignificant. In other ways its a Young Adult book about a depressed vampire falling in love with a human.
I reckon the final project will be at least 100,000 words long and I update every Friday and some Mondays. So buckle in and join the fun/angst. Every single comment and PM from people who have read this book has meant the absolute world to me.
So thank you!
Please don't be a stranger,
-EJE
*unconventional is what we say when we mean LGBTQ+ but we want it to be more mainstream, right?
