Reflections
Brett leaned back and took a long swig of beer. He let out a sigh and looked admiringly at the bottle in his hand. "I wonder who invented the bottle?"
"Well, if you're talking about the glass bottle, it came into use about 1500 BC." Adam picked up a stick and threw it on the fire.
"Damn it, I hate it when you have an answer for everything. I didn't really want to know. I was just enjoying this beer. Besides, you didn't answer the question. I said WHO invented the bottle."
"Abdul Abdel Jamouche from Mesopotamia."
"Really?" Brett was interested now.
"No, you idiot. That was over 3500 years ago. How am I supposed to know that?" Adam put the last of the wood on the fire and watched the swirl of sparks climb to the dark sky. Well not entirely dark. Millions of pinpoints of light shone down on them.
Brett was also watching the rising sparks. "I wonder how many of those planets have people like us?"
Adam sighed. "I hate to break this to you, but those aren't planets, they're stars. Nobody can live on a star."
"You can see planets up there too."
"Yes but the planets you can see are in our solar system, like Venus over there. We know there is no life in our solar system. At least not like us."
"Can't you just enjoy your beer without having an answer to everything?"
"Can't you just enjoy your beer without askin' all of life's questions?"
Another swig, another sigh. "This is the life, hey?"
"Was that a question?"
"More like an observation. But here's a question for ya."
Adam sighed, "Go ahead."
"Who invented the glass to make the bottle?"
"Brett, that was five thousand years ago. What does it matter who invented glass?"
"Hah, you don't know, do you?"
Neither friend spoke for a few moments. Lost in their thoughts while a million bugs all around them chirped and twittered in their sexiest voices, hoping to attract a mate.
Then Adam, said "You're right. This is the life. To be able to get out in front of a campfire, see all the stars. You forget about all that crap you gotta put up with during the week."
Brett leaned over and they did a bottle bump. "I know what ya mean, bro. It don't get any better than this."
The flames reached higher as the last log started hissing. Its wavering light reached a little further into the darkness and then retreated. Almost as though a battle was being fought between dark and light.
Another shower of sparks was sent forth when hot coals collapsed and the logs shifted. Adam watched as they danced up on air and then winked out. There must be some truth there, he thought. If only I could see what it is.
His thoughts were interrupted when Brett said "I wonder who built the first campfire."
