CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE

I stare at my chipped nude pink nail polish. Evan told me no girl doesn't like nail polish and therefore I needed to get my nails done. To be honest, mani-pedi isn't my kind of thing. It used to be, but not anymore. Sometimes, I don't understand Evan, he's a boy and yet, is so feminine, not that there's anything wrong with being feminine, but it worries me, how can he be like that when he's lived with boys all his life? I sigh, I came here to escape him, and here I am, thinking about him, once again.

I look up before I bump into someone, believe me, it has happened A LOT. I drag my depressing, rainbow-striped suitcase across the polished, concrete airport floor. I had already called an uber so I quickly went outside and breathed a sigh of relief. Ah, freedom. When I get in the car, I give the driver the address of my hometown. I stare outside of the window, mesmerized by the yellow hues of the sun coming up, the streets, shops that I am so familiar with. It all comes back to me. Why am I doing this again? Right, facing the demons of my past aka attending my old best friend's wedding with all the people I have avoided for the last six years.

When she-my best friend- called, I was more than surprised. I hadn't talked to her in years and here she was, on the phone, informing me about her wedding and how everything's so sunshine and rainbows for her, how she's happy and would lurve it if I would be her maid of honor and how she needs- oh wait, what now? Rewind, please. Maid of honor? Me? Who she hasn't seen in six years? So, I refused, but, let's continue, shall we?- how she needs her BFF to be there while she marries her favorite person in the entire world- who I don't even know, by the way, and she's been doing fine without me so far, why the sudden invitation? Not just invitation but request-oh wait did I say request? Sorry, slip of the tongue- demand me to be the maid of honor. Of course, me, being me, offended, said no. End of story. So, why am I on my way to the said wedding? Funny story, now you mention it.

So, I'm going about my day, lying on the sofa in front of the t.v screen, eating icecream, experiencing the unemployed life. There's a knock on the front door. I open the door. And guess what I see? You're right, readers! My very own, Cara Schaffer soon to be...I have no idea?- bestie.

"Cara?! What're you doing here?"

"I'm here to convince you to be my maid of honor!" She declares and pushes past me, entering the apartment. We haven't seen each other in six years and this is how she greets me. But that's Cara Schaffer for you.

"By all means, please do come in," I say in a flat voice, with a dumbfounded face. Then, just as I'm about to close the door, I see him.

"Brodie? What are YOU doing here? Is there anyone else?" I ask, scared the one person I never wanted to see again was probably standing outside my door.

"No, and I'm here for the same reason as Cara, to convince you to come to our wedding" he answers sheepishly as I close the door.

Brodie has dark hair and dark eyes. His dark complexion and stoic expression make him look scary and dangerous but he's a puppy really, at least the last time I saw him, which was 4 years ago because we briefly met in between.

I jump, "WHAAAT? You're dating?!"

"Getting married now, actually," Cara says in a matter of factly tone, twirling her long blonde strands with a small smile on her face.

"What? But- I always thought you'd end up with-anyways isn't it like, against bro code- t-to like date your best friend's ex??"

"Don't try to understand bro code, honey. They're weird." Cara says.

Brodie snorts, "Like your girl codes are any better" This is SO weird.

"Okay, we're getting off track here. So, you and Brodie? Since when?" I ask, perplexed.

Cara grins and I know I've asked the wrong question. This is Cara Schaffer we're talking about, after all.

"So, like, we were at a college party, we didn't recognize each other and flirted all night and we hooked up but h-" (projectile vomiting in my mouth)

Before she can launch into the unholy details of her hook up with Brodie, he interrupts.

"Unfortunately, Holly is right. We're getting off track here. Look, you have to come to the wedding." Unfortunately? Shit, it will take some time to get used to the idea of them together.

"Yeah!" Cara nods enthusiastically. "Even he will be there! You two can totally get it on! It's the perfect opportunity!" All the more reason not to go, I think.

Cara's face falls and I realize I said it out loud, "Why not? You guys ended it due to-"

"Nevertheless, we're different people now and my situation just cannot allow anything of the romantic sorts."

"But-"

"No, Cara. I'm not coming. I honestly can't help you with the wedding stuff an-"

"You don't have to! You just have to come to the wedding!"

"Why? We haven't talked in so long-"

"I know, but please, you're my best friend, no one can take your place, okay? When we were kids we promised to be each other's maid of honors and always be together! I really want you to be there! You promised! If you don't keep your promise, try to remember the Miami incident?" Cara smirks. Ok, she got me.

My eyes widen as I realize what she's trying to do, this sneaky 'lil bitch. She's trying to guilt trip me and she's threatening me.

Yes, I know what you're thinking, who is this crazy girl? The answer to that, my friend is that she's my best friend. Or was. Is. Will be. Whatever. And now, I'm on my way to the wedding. And I have a feeling, it's not going to be such a great trip.
