Chapter Three

*Mitch's POV*

I slowly stir awake and reach for Jerome, only to find my movements restricted. My eyes snap open to a blinding light and a searing pain. "J-Jerome..?" I croak. Then, it all comes rushing back. The accident. I'm in a hospital.

I anxiously glance around at the various machines hooked up to me, way too scared to even look down. The steady beep of the heart monitor does nothing to calm my nerves and the beeps start coming faster. I'm struggling to breathe and can't get enough air despite the mask. Suddenly, I black out.

And begin dreaming. First, it's just a blur. Memories and people, flashing by in a rapid slide show. I begin to panic. But then, the slides stop. And settles on one thing. Jerome. His face. His so called "skills". His laugh. Our times together. The inside jokes. The accident.

Sweating, I jolt awake. And I realize there are other sounds than just the monitor.

"Hey dood," says a voice to my right.

I strain to sit up but a firm hand on my chest forces me to stay down.

"Hello Mitchell. You may not remember but, this is Doctor Martin speaking. I'm afraid you have to remain laying. Your wounds are still critical," says a kind voice in a lab coat.

I nod my head and attempt to speak but, I end up sounding like a dying cat.

Doctor Martin soundlessly hands me a glass of water and helps me take a drink, not before removing the air mask, of course. He takes a step back and another person, no wait, make that two, step foward.

"R-ryan??? Hey man...", I manage to say.

He just smiles grimly and his gaze travels down the sheets and back to the assorted machines.

"Is it t-that bad?," I ask seeing the look on his face.

"Nah, man. It's good." But, his face tells me otherwise.

A woman steps closer. I squint at her, trying to remember..." Oh, hey Kayla! Didn't recognize you there!"

She grins. "Am I really that hard to forget???", she teases.

I give her a solemn nod. "Especially with Mr.-Good-Looking standing right there."

Kayla giggles and Ryan just rolls his eyes at the pun. Doctor Martin comes forward.

"Since this is the first time Mitchell has regained consciousness for an extended amount of time, me and my team need to talk to him. Please be only a few minutes more." He grabs his clipboard and walks out.

Ryan looks down at me."How are you holding up???,"he asks.

I move my gauze-wrapped arms and look at him. "Dood, life is so great... I can't express how much fun I'm having,"I say in a very monotone voice.

He rolls his eyes, again. "Well excuse my stupid question." He crosses his arms in mock anger.

Kayla grabs his arm and pulls him away from the bed. "We came as soon as we got the message." She looks around,"Where's Jerome???"

At the mention of his name, my heart hits the floor. Jerome... Where are you biggums??? Silence. The only sounds in the room is the heart monitor slowly increasing speed.

Kayla instantly freezes up.She walks over to a chair and sits down. "I'm so sorry!!!," she exclaims. "I just assumed th-", she broke off there and put her head in her hands.

Ryan leaves my bedside and shuffles over next to Kayla. He sits down next to her and she buries her head in his shoulder. Having comforted her, he starts talking again. "Don't worry man, I'm sure he's perfectly fine." Ryan takes a deep, shuddering breath. "Dood, I'm sorry."

My face, conforms into one of confusion. "About w-what???," I cough.

He opens his mouth to talk again but just as he does, Doctor Martin walks in with a group of doctors.

"I am very sorry but it is time for you guys to leave," he says, almost apologetically.

Ryan nods his head reluctantly and grabs Kayla's hand, pulling her up.

Doctor Martin begins speaking again. "If you two could please accompany Doctor Phillip to the front desk. Since it looks like Mitchell nor Jerome are American citizens, we have some papers needing to be filled out." A man with glasses detaches himself from the group and escorts Ryan and Kayla out of the room. I give their backs a small wave goodbye, throat too scratchy to talk.

The door closes and Doctor Martin starts barking out orders. "Nurse Ivy, I need his vitals checked! Doctor Tristan, could you please check the dosage of the drip? I need Nurse Calla with me." Orders given, the team scrambles to get things done. Doctor Martin and Nurse Calla slowly approach my hospital bed, giving the others time to finish up their job. "Hello Mitchell, is it alright if we ask you a few question???", he inquires.

I slowly shake my head yes. I'm starting to become drowsy.

He grabs his clipboard and shuffles a few papers. "Great! Can you describe how you are feeling? Any pain, drowsiness, or anything else?"

"I-i am feel-lin-," my voice cracks and I reach for the glass of water. Having taken a drink, I sink back into the bed and try again. "My throat hurts indefinelty. My arms ache a little when I move them and I am feeling a bit tired."

He nods his head and writes down a few notes. Turning around, he motions to the rest of the staff. "Thank you. Please head down to the lab, I shall join you soon." They all incline their heads and walk out of the room. Only him and Nurse Calla remain. "So Mitchell, what you ar-," he starts but I interrupt him.

"Please sir, just call me Mitch," I say.

Looking baffled, he continues. "So Mitch, what you are experiencing is very normal for your kind of accident and are expected to make a full recovery." He gestures to Nurse Calla and she hesitantly steps forward. "Ms. Calla here is assigned to you. If you feel any worse or just simply need something, you can talk to her."

The brunette next to him waves her hand shyly. "Nice to meet you," she says.

Doctor Martin nods his head as if he is satisfied, gathers his things, and begins to walk away.

    "E-excuse me???," I ask.

He turns around with a questioning look on his face. "Yes?"

I frown, feeling dumb. "Um, what is today's date?"

"Today is April 5th, a Wednesday," he says.

The fifth? That means I've been in the hospital for almost an entire week!

    "Anymore questions?," he inquires.

I bite my lip anxiously. If I don't ask this now, I'll never have the courage to do it. Taking a deep breath, I blurt out,"How's Jerome?"

I hear papers rustling and then the doctor speaks, his voice almost sounding sad. "It doesn't look too good. Chances of survival are very slim."

My heart skips a beat in my chest. Did I hear him right?!?

"Good day, Mitch," Doctor Martin says softly and the door closes with a quiet thud.

Nurse Calla looks down at me, her face full of sympathy. "I'm sure the doctors are doing all they can. He'll be fine."

I just nod my head numbly. The darkness slowly creeps up on me and I completely give myself to it...
