Rime

Life isn't always fair. I learned that when I was given my gift. My gift turned me into this cold being. I was born to be harsh, cold and unfeeling. I was often looked at as the curse of the lot of us. I took my throne, knowing the world hated who I was and everything about me. It turned me into a brutal being. I often found joy in making the world miserable. I found ways to prolong my time in command. Often pushing around the queens that ruled around me. They would not stop me if I began my reign earlier than what was gifted nor would I get stopped for dragging on my time.
It took thousands of years for me to realize that Queen Kiko and Queen Jarmilla were not weak. They were not easily pushed around. They were strong and in their strength, they realized my weakness. The loneliness that was forced upon me at birth. They were strong enough to give me time that belonged to them for the sole purpose of keeping me company.
They didn't care that people hated it. They found ways to make people enjoy the time. Creating festivals and events that would lead to my reign. I would still be as I was created to be but they took away the loneliness. People still hated me. And at times my brutal nature resulted in a loss of life. But eventually, people began to celebrate me.
I felt invincible!
Queen Kiko became my best friend. The one often associated the most with me. They often mistook my brutality as a curse on her reign as well but she was an amazing leader. A queen that brought so much to the world. She was kind and fair but unlike Jarmila, she had a harshness to her as well. People believed that I must have touched her soul in a way that made her strong but the reality was she was what people needed her to be as a queen. She was what women should have been at the time. But that was not the reality of the world at the time. Credit for much of her strength was given to me. Because of this, I had to see less of her. I could not let them give others credit for Kiko's work. She was a good Queen! She deserved credit. In this time Queen Kiko fell in love with King Hefin. It was in this time that the gods above declared it to be forbidden. Kiko, broken came to me. I told her to declare war upon the gods and man. Hefin chose to abide by the rules and in doing so broke the heart of the one he loved. It took thousands of years for him to realize the foolishness in his choice and twice as long for her to forgive him. When the time came to declare war upon the gods, Kiko and Hefin realized they needed Jarmila and me to join them. I was tasked in getting Jarmila to join us but that was difficult.
She was a beautiful being that danced her way through her reign. She was loved by all and seldom was a negative word said about her. She saw no reason to upset the world she knew and she never met Kiko so fighting for her love was unimportant. So I had to figure out what would get her to join in.
I could not see beyond my own reign. Often I was tired by the time Jarmila's rule began. She took her time taking over. Her time was like a beautiful song and I found that she slowly worked her way into my heart. This beautiful soul touched the coldness I was cursed with. It made me angry because my cold, harsh nature would destroy her delicate, sweet one. People hated me and loved her. And to top it off it was forbidden by the gods.
I couldn't help Kiko by being selfish. I couldn't claim her for she followed the rules. So I became bitter. Often becoming more brutal. Until in my anger, I froze the world. Kiko and Hefin stood by me. Hefin knowing that my nature would eventually kill him had found a place my brutality didn't reach and he stayed there as long as he could. Kiko would go between both. But Jarmila soon became ill. She could not live where Hefin did and a frozen world damaged her heart.
I tried talking to her but she grew weaker.
I was killing what touched my heart about her but I did not know how to fix it. I was born cruel and cold. I was given this curse. I did not ask for it. Kiko began to visit my Queen and in her visits slowly taught her to dance in the ice to create beauty in the bleak. Slowly, they found a way to create beauty in the darkness. Realizing that the four of us and our kingdoms could bring balance if we worked together, Kiko and Jarmila figured out how to change the rules the god's placed upon us. They created a kingdom ruled by us all. Once united they sent word to the gods that we do not live by their laws. We were created above them and did not bow to anyone. The queens learned that in keeping us apart, they controlled us. It didn't allow us a chance to learn that we didn't have to be alone. It was through love that the tides change. It was through anger that a fight began.
After realizing that we had won and our friends could get together, a problem remained. I froze the world in anger. I was created to be destructive. Jarmila was tasked to help me break through the anger and learn control. In doing this she taught me the beauty in what I was born to do. To show me the beauty in what I am. I having long been in love with her, felt my anger melt around her. That is when she fell in love with me. It took time to melt the ice that covered the world but with her, I was finally able to pull my anger back and break the curse I cast upon this world. When she finally reunited me with my friends in our new kingdom, Sinamer. It was a place we all could rule and where a balance could be forged. Loving how Jarmila used to dance through her reign, we created fairies. We allowed the gods to use their gifts and soon enough we all worked together to create a very beautiful yet magically kingdom.
Over time, we found peace.
This children is why we must never forget that balance can exist in any world, you just have to find it. I tell you this story because it was because of my gift that we are here today celebrating together. You will each have gifts that can be seen as harsh or soft but together with another, you can create beauty. Some of you will dance in the Spring when my Queen rules while others will be brutal and cold during the winter. All of your gifts are needed. And we will celebrate all each year in the winter during my reign. Because the reality is I was not made to be unforgiving. It was in my nature to bring to this world a new season. I was taught it was a curse and without love, I was unable to see it was something more. It was my friends who showed me I wasn't cursed and it took spring to melt a cold-hearted king.
