Spring

AN: I once said to someone that I'd make a story that involved love for they did not like the idea, this popped into my head this afternoon, so I wrote it down.

A girl with blonde hair and a fondness for accents sat atop a tall wooden stool in the middle of a crowded shop. The shop was quite large and always busy; customers came and went buying beautiful things for other people. She always felt very alone, customers were rude to her, and never remembered her name. They were all in the same boat the staff, some coped better than others. There was a man that worked near her who became obsessive with gift wrapping and curling ribbons, she’d seen many a customer scared away by his ways but he kept at it. Then there was the girl who worked on bags who randomly started crying at all the things she couldn’t afford.

For the girl with the blonde hair it was just a job, it paid the bills and gave her something to do. It was a stepping stone to something better; she was studying at the moment, doing something she loved. However there was one thing that had surpassed the girl with the blonde hair, love.

It wasn’t like she wasn’t looking for it, she just didn’t like the concept. Life never gave you the love of books or movies, there was often a lot of pain involved, unresolved feelings and disappointment, she didn’t think it was worth the hassle. Not that her friends hadn’t tried to set her up with any manner of man be it human or fictional elf. She just wasn’t giving in.

However there was one young man who might have a shot, he wore a red shirt and jumper with blue shorts. When it was cold he wore a hat, he always had a smile and said ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’ to all. She saw him every morning before work. He was though it didn’t sound exotic or exciting, her postman.

She didn’t know when the feelings had started only that they had. She now looked forward to the mornings where she would see his face, his smile and hear his voice. If only she wasn’t so tongued tied and actually managed to say more than two words to him, she hated the way he turned her into a gooey mess.

One day quite by chance he came into the shop, right up to her till and everything, she was quite at a loss of why he was there. She watched him as he perused her counter, then he stopped having found something he liked. ‘I’ll have that please’ he said, pointing to a beautiful elegant necklace, the blonde haired girl sighed, of course he would have a special someone to give it too.

She began to wrap it up, ‘This is a lovely necklace, and she must be a lucky woman’.

‘She is’ replied the postman.

‘I’m sure she’ll love it’ said the girl, trying to ignore the disappointment in her heart.

‘I hope so’ he said looking directly at her.

The woman wrapped it so carefully, tissue, paper, ribbons, it was a delight to look at once it was finished. The postman paid and she handed the gift over to him but he handed it back. She frowned there was nothing wrong with it and he’d paid so what was the problem.

‘You see the necklace is lovely and I know she likes it but I haven’t exactly told her how I feel. I’m not really good with words…but I was hoping if I just gave it to her she’d know’ he managed to mumble.

‘So why are you giving it to me?...oh’ she said.

‘Oh in a good way?’ he asked.

‘I always wondered what a postman wore on his day off’ she muttered with a smile.

‘Care to find out?’ he asked.

‘I get off at five’ she said shyly.
