"I don't wanna go to sleep!" I protested, my voice rising in frustration.

Jake and I had been in a tug-of-war over my bedtime for the past five minutes, and the argument seemed to be growing more intense by the second.

"You're going to sleep. I don't care how much you protest, Wren!" Jake said, his tone firm.

"I do care!" I shot back, crossing my arms defiantly.

"Go. To. Sleep!" Jake's patience was clearly wearing thin.

"No!" I retorted stubbornly.

"Birdie, please," Jake's voice softened as he tried a different approach, desperation creeping in.

"I'm not tired!" I insisted, though my body was betraying me with its exhaustion.

"Alright, how can I get you to sleep?" Jake's hands ran through his hair in frustration. "Because you need to rest."

"A cat and a dose of sleep meds," I said, half-jokingly.

"I can't get you a cat," Jake replied, his tone half-amused, half-exasperated.

"Then I'm not sleeping," I said, sticking to my guns.

"Can I substitute for the cat?" Jake asked, with a wry smile.

I considered his offer for a moment, the corners of my mouth twitching upwards. "Sure," I finally shrugged, giving in.

Jake walked into the bathroom and emerged a few moments later, holding two little white pills and a cup of water. He handed them to me, and I took the pills with a grateful sigh. I was too tired to fight the sleepiness anymore, but my stubborn streak wouldn't let me admit defeat just yet.

Jake then laid down beside me on the bed, and I, in a moment of exhaustion and need for comfort, rolled over and lay on top of him. His warmth was comforting, and despite my previous protests, I could feel myself starting to relax.

"So if I had gotten you a cat, this is how you'd treat it?" Jake asked, his voice light and teasing.

"Well, you're not a cat, Jake," I said with a laugh, even as I felt the heat of his body beneath me.

"Fair point," he said with a chuckle, "but could you get off me now?"

"Fine," I grumbled, rolling off him and onto my side, but not before feeling a pang of disappointment at the loss of his comforting warmth.

Jake wrapped his arms around me and nestled his head into my neck. His body heat was comforting, and for a moment, I almost felt at peace.

"Birdie, you're burning up," he said, his hand reaching up to check my forehead.

"Actually, I'm freezing," I replied, shivering slightly.

Jake got up, his expression serious, and went to the bathroom again. He returned with a thermometer and, after a brief but playful struggle, managed to get it into my mouth. We both chuckled at the wrestling match that ensued, but the seriousness of my condition was evident.

The thermometer beeped, and Jake took it out, his brow furrowed in concern. "You're at 99.1," he said, showing me the reading.

"Ughh," I rolled my eyes, feeling both defeated and frustrated.

"Birdie," Jake said softly, his concern evident.

"Jakey," I replied with a small smile, feeling the warmth of his affection.

"You need to sleep now," Jake said firmly, placing the thermometer back on the bathroom counter.

"Fine," I sighed, conceding as I realized I wouldn't hear the end of it otherwise. "Come lay back with my substitute cat."

"Fine," Jake agreed with a chuckle.

He settled back down on the bed, positioning himself next to me just as he had before. His presence was a soothing balm against my discomfort, and I could feel the tension slowly easing from my body. Jake's warmth and steady breathing created a calming rhythm, and as I snuggled closer to him, I felt my eyelids growing heavy.

"Thanks for staying," I mumbled, barely able to keep my eyes open.

"Anytime," Jake whispered, his voice a soothing murmur. "Just get some rest."

With Jake's comforting presence beside me, I allowed myself to finally drift off to sleep. The argument about sleep was forgotten as I succumbed to the exhaustion, feeling secure and cared for in Jake's arms. The world outside my room seemed to fade away, leaving only the comforting warmth and gentle rhythm of Jake's breathing to lull me into a much-needed rest.
