"Wren, it's stuck!" Jake's voice was strained as he wrestled with the door to the roof.
"Push harder then!" I shouted back, trying to be heard over the noise of the struggle.
"I can't, it's too hard!" Jake's frustration was evident.
"Use your whole body, Jake!" I instructed.
"I'm trying!" he groaned, his efforts clearly not yielding results.
"Just jam it in there!" I added, determined to get this door open.
"Wren, this isn't my first rodeo. I know how to do this," Jake retorted, clearly exasperated.
"Move," I said, taking charge of the situation.
"Okay, but be careful," Jake warned, stepping aside.
I maneuvered myself to the front of the ladder and attempted to force the door open. Suddenly, a loud crash echoed as the door gave way. In my haste and loss of balance, I slipped and fell backwards.
A violent gasp escaped me as I screamed briefly. In a moment of unexpected heroism, Jake caught me before I hit the ground. I blinked my eyes open, finding myself cradled in his arms. His face was close to mine, and he was smiling reassuringly.
"I told you to be careful," he said, his voice gentle but teasing.
"Okay, but you weren't holding the ladder," I countered, still in a daze.
"But I was," Jake insisted.
"Not," I laughed, trying to regain my composure.
"Alright, let me get back up there," Jake said, setting me down carefully. He climbed up the ladder with renewed determination. At the top, he gave the door a forceful push, and it creaked open with a loud groan.
"What the hell was that?!" Nora's voice came from around the corner, clearly startled.
"The door to the roof?" I called back.
"You realize we have the key to the lock holding that door, right?" Nora's voice was incredulous as she rounded the corner to join us.
Jake looked down at me with an are you serious expression on his face. "Oops," I said, trying to stifle my laughter.
"Whatever, just get up here," Jake said with a chuckle, climbing onto the roof. I followed him, and together we emerged into the cool night air.
The roof was just as we had hoped—a perfect spot to watch the sunset. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the city. We had a bottle of sparkling grape juice, which we pretended was champagne since neither of us was old enough to legally drink. The evening was peaceful, filled with the soft sound of the city and our shared laughter.
"Hey, Wren?" Jake's voice broke the comfortable silence.
"Yeah?" I asked, resting my head on his shoulder.
"You know I like you, right?" he said softly, his tone suddenly more serious.
"Well, yeah, you're my best friend," I replied, trying to keep the mood light. "Don't tell Nora," I added with a laugh.
"No, I mean, like, more than that," Jake stammered, clearly struggling with how to express himself.
"Are you trying to ask me out?" I asked, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and nervousness.
"Yes," Jake admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey, Jake?" I turned to face him, feeling a surge of affection.
"Yes?" he looked at me with hopeful eyes.
"Will you go out with me?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"Yes," he said with a relieved laugh.
"Yay," I said softly, my heart fluttering as I reached out and took his hand. Our fingers interlaced perfectly, as if they were always meant to fit together.
"Yay," Jake echoed, his voice full of happiness. He gently squeezed my hand, and we both settled back to enjoy the view of the sunset, basking in the warmth of our newfound connection. The evening had turned into something magical, and as the stars began to appear, I knew that this was just the beginning of something wonderful.
