~Two days later~
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
"Shut up already, will you?" Keith heard himself say, his eyes squinting shut in annoyance. He didn't like that sound. The building beside the hospital seemed to be always in construction, and the constant banging of a hammer, or whatever the hell it was, bugged him with every fiber of his being.
Thud.
Thud-
"Shut up!-" Keith had shot up, and looked towards the window, only to see that there was no one over on the side of the building, working. Confusion lit inside of him, and he looked around, then to the door, as a nurse came in. This nurse was quite skinny, way too skinny if you asked him, and had long brown hair that fell to her waist, but was up in a ponytail. Her voice was pigeon toned, and that annoyed Keith a little, but he ignored it. There was a reason everyone called her Mrs. Bird.
"Im so sorry Mr. Kogane, i forgot to give you your medicine this morning-"
"Keith" Keith insisted, taking a deep breath to calm himself down. He understood that what he heard was merely his imagination, and figured he'd been thinking about the construction beside the hospital way too much. "I was just bothered by the construction next door. i need to get some fresh air or something.."
"Of course, Let me help open the window. Here's your medicine" Mrs. Bird said rather quickly, handing Keith the pills like she was afraid to touch him, and scampered over to the window and opened it. Seems like shes always nervous about something.. Keith thought to himself, sitting back against the pillows of his hospital bed, Maybe she should be in a hospital for major anxiety or something.
"Mr.- um, Keith" Mrs. Bird started, and seemed to get more nervous when keith turned to look at her, "U-Um, someone is currently being moved into this room as well.. there will be curtains put up to separate you both, but.. i just wanted to let you know-"
"Oh, thats just great" Keith interrupted her, earning a squeak of nervousness from the nurse. He looked at his hands, which he had unknowingly clenched into fists, "You hear that mom? dad? they are sticking me with an idiot-"
"T-Take your medicine sir.. Mrs. Little will be here soon for your physical therapy session" Mrs. Bird squeaked again, then quickly saw herself out the door. Keith watched her leave, and took a breath. He didn't like the idea of a "roommate".
***
It wasnt until the door opened, and a voice shouted "Hello Roommate!", until Keith decided he wished the motorcycle impaled him. A cuban boy, around 18 years old, stepped in and, with the help of nurses, got situated into the bed beside Keith. This boy was beaten to the bone, with clear signs of bruising and swelling all over his body. There were stitches in the boy's head, and on the boy's neck, and he seemed to have trouble walking on his feet, though Keith couldn't figure out why. But one thing was for sure, that this boy was as positive as a smiling sun, and it bothered Keith.
The boy, after getting situated, looked over to Keith and smiled, "Hey there, the names Lance-"
"Wonderful" Keith interrupted him, turning his head to look out the window. He instantly hated the idea of sharing a room, and this boy made it even more so.
"I heard your 18!" the boy, Lance, pressed on, "Im 18 as well! that means we will get along swell! don't ya think?" He asked, shuffling in his bed. He seemed a bit discouraged, but he kept his happy tone, "Your name is Keith right? it said so outside on the door. Im glad to meet you Keith!"
"Pleasure" Keith mumbled, staring out the window at a bird. It was a marvelous blue, and its beady black eyes seemed to stare intently at a worm in the plants hanging outside the window. Keith wondered where its parents were. As the cuban boy spoke, he began to pay less and less attention, and eventually the boy gave a sigh and sat back onto the pillows of his own bed.
and good night to you too. Keith thought, as he watched the sun begin to set. He laid back a bit more, and gave a sigh of his own, relaxing at the sight, and closed his eyes. Only to open them once more as the boy gave one final try.
"Do you like sunsets?" He asked, his eyes scanning over the pale boy in the bed beside him, hope lit his gaze and infected his body.
"Yes" Keith grumbled, deciding to speak up so the boy would finally shut up. He noticed that, that only gave a spark of life within the boy, and felt a sigh escape him, oh great.
"I like them too" the boy spoke, gently though. Keith noticed that the boy seemed calmer than before as he spoke, though adrenaline made his pinky finger twitch, in excitement, that he had spoken to him. "I used to watch the sunset by myself all the time.. i kinda stopped though, after my job got super complicated."
Keith was silent, before he turned his head a bit, "Whats your job?" he asked, and silently screwed himself for leading the conversation forwards. This made Lance more excited, and he spoke with confidence, "I work at a sea themed restaurant-"
"A restaurant?" Keith gave a smirk and turned away from the boy, closing his eyes, "Thats great. Good night Waiter Boy."
"..good night Keith"
