Chapter 15
Four days later, the month turned to November. The air was forever getting cooler and the night time fires forever getting bigger.
"I don't know how much longer I can do this," I said between shivers as I shuffled closer to the fire.
Gale was snapping branches in half to add to the fire like he did every night. He had also, like he did every night, insisted that I wear his jacket.
"It won't be long till we reach the waterfall. This land doesn't go on forever," he replied coming to join me at the fire's edge.
"I'm just worried. How easy it would be to track us. We've left a pile of ashes behind us every night and any wolf can track a scent without a single piece of trouble," I said.
"Luckily, we have the fortune of the seasons on our side, Robyn. See how quickly the leaves are falling?" he asked. "Autumn could have easily covered our first fire remains three times over by now. And as for our scents, the wind is strong and blowing West. They'll be twenty miles off track at least."
Wishing that I could find comfort in his words I placed a hand on his cheek before saying "I wouldn't like to underestimate their abilities, Gale. They found us the first time, didn't they?"
"The first time we were but days from the Pack. Now we are weeks. And I am not proud to say this but Thawn, Raven, Atlas, Fern and Blaise would have required a few days at the very least to recover from the injuries I implemented. They can't have caught us up even if they are on the right track because we have never stopped for more than seven hours at once."
I nodded and let him kiss me.
"Now get some sleep whilst I go hunting something for us to eat," he said as his stomach grumbled deeply.
I let out a small giggle at the noise, knowing the best way to deal with our constant hunger was to have good humour about it. He then zipped up my jacket right over my nose and kissed my forehead.
"I'll see you in the morning," he said softly before walking off into the dark and cold of the forest.
I lay down in front of the glowing flames of the fires, listening to it crackle and spit. The river could still be heard a hundred yards to our left along with the fading crunch of leaves underneath Gale's footsteps.
