At the verge of life sounds become distant, sight blurs and skin becomes numb... The last thought is a wish: to rest, once and for all... But there is a voice calling out, reaching deep into the mind and slicing the threads that were pulling the last fragments of the soul into the darkness...

Is it really worth it all? All those battles that I fought, all the enemies I faced...

In the they all become just meaningless encounters. How can anyone tell if I really won or just lost once again a part of my sanity.

Can you really blame the enemy for walking in the shadows after the world left them with no other choice?

She was standing in front of me with eyes full of hatred. An archenemy that no one would wish for. She was my demise and I her ragdoll.

The pain that I accidentally put her through all those years before was eating her up for uncounted hours. But who can blame her? I deserved it...

I managed to avoid her wrath once but this time there was no backing away. The orb I had with me was what she desired.

An ancient artifact that binds lost souls to deceased bodies.

A long forgotten witchcraft abandoned in some ruins near the Konoha village.

The forbidden knowledge that could bring downfall to the whole humanity if used wrong.

But that didn't concern her. All she wanted was to bring her little brother back to life. And now she started to walk towards my shattered body not bothering if stepping into one of many blood pools that were scattered around us. Mine and hers.

'It is finally over Aena... Now I can be finally reunited with my brother!' she said in a husky voice, gripping her right arm to stop the bleeding. Blood sizzled from that spot onto the ground leaving a messy path.

My tired eyes caught only a glimpse of what happened next.

From the massive entrance doors to the village came a black shadow. Maybe it is the Nightmare that comes for the lost souls to escort me to the other side.

Either way, I was ready. Nothing was holding me back in this world anymore after seeing those eyes of hers. They pierced through my heart and burned all the cheerful memories I shared with her. I hoped too long for a happy ending of our story but the reality was far away from it. I was just a foolish human being that believed in fairy tales.

The shadow approached me and watched me gloomy.

Somehow I was happy.

The thought that maybe she will find peace after all was a pleasant feeling, no matter the price the rest of the world would need to pay.

Invisible threads lifted me. The Nightmare accepted my final wish with open hands.

I was greeted with a stinging pain in one of my arms and a hard surface beneath me. The soft fur entangled between my sore fingers as for a moment I heard an angelic voice.

'Aena, the adrenaline shot will pump you up for a brief moment. Go and hide in the woods!' it said.

Was I dreaming or was the silver angel talking some weird things?

Suddenly the world started to move around me. I embraced the Nightmares body and let it carry me further in the unknown. For hours it travelled under the clear skies that I managed to see.

All that I had left behind seemed now like a faint dream.

The realm of darkness wrapped its wings around me and I drifted off to sleep.
