Chapter 8: Selfish

Hi beauties! I'm so, so sorry for not updating in such a long time. I had a lot going on with me these past few weeks that wasn't so pleasant. I'll try my best to update regularly. I might have to create an updating schedule. Tell me what you thing about the idea. Thank you so much for all your support on this book, I've been able to keep going because of all the love. I really appreciate it. I love you all, and I'm so very sorry once again.

Hilex POV

I sped down the road, as my anger boiled deep within me. I was furious, I couldn't think straight.

How could that bastard do that to me. How? Did I not mean anything to him as a son? is that why he betrayed me like this!

My grip on the steering wheel had become so tight, that my knuckles had turned beyond pail.

I hated him. I hated him so much.

I pulled into the parking lot of my office, not feeling like going home, knowing that a swarm of paparazzi would be waiting for me there.

I sat in my car, to calm myself down for a little bit. I knew there would be a few paparazzi waiting for me here, and I was definitely not in the mood to answer any questions.

I picked up my phone and dialed Brandon's number. He was one of my body guards, and I trusted him effusively. After a few beeps, he picked up right away.

"Good evening sir, what can I help you with?"

He spoke formally. He was always in a working mood.

"I wanted to know if there were any paparazzi around the entrance to the office and if there are, I want you and the others to disperse them quickly and call me right after ."

I said clearly instructing him.

"Okay sir, we'll be out in a second"

He said, and I thanked him before hanging up the phone.

With a sigh, I rested My head on the steering wheel. I was so, so worn out.
I literally did not know how to feel at this moment.

Is shit like this suppose to happen in real life?

I thought to myself as my phone buzzed, bringing me out of my doleful thoughts. I reached out for it, answering.

"Hello."

I answered tiredly.

"Sir, we have dispersed all the paparazzi. The coast is clear."

Brandon voice came through the speaker.

"Okay, thank you"

I said, cutting off the call. I took my keys out of the ignition, after shutting the car off, I got out. The cold gossamer evening breeze, brushed by, and left a chill in my spine as I made my way into my building.

The lobby wasn't packed like it was earlier. Most of my employees were done for the day. I walked through the lobby, receiving bemused stares from the few that still remained, clarifying the fact that they had heard about what had happened earlier. I shot a flouncing glare at them, and they immediately scoured off to get back to their work. With a scowl I marched up to my assistant's desk. She looked terrified.

Why? Because of me?

I thought to myself but immediately shook it of.

"Tracy, I'm going up to my office. I want nobody, I repeat nobody's disturbance. Are we clear?"

I ordered. My voice coming out angrier than I actually wanted .

"But sir th-"

She nervously started, but I immediately cut her off.

"ARE. WE. CLEAR?"

I bellowed once again, the exigency clear in my voice. Not caring what she had to say.

"Yes sir"

She whispered, with her head down.

"Good"

I gritted out, before storming of towards my office. I got into the elevator, and leaned against the walls, slowly slipping down to the ground, till I was completely seated. I wish I could stay in here forever, so I wouldn't have to deal with the stupid shit on the other side if these doors, but I can't, life doesn't work that way. I had to face this, no matter what.

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened signally I was at my destination. I walked slowly out of the elevator and into the hallway. I stood in front of my office door, all my thoughts as dismal as they could get. I just wanted to rest, nothing else.

I opened the door, slowly loosening my tie, before turning on the lights with a clap of my hands, only to be met with my father and Sofia sitting comfortable in my office. The anger I thought had been suppressed, had once again risen to the surface.

"What the fuck are you doing in my office?!"

I growled out angrily through gritted teeth. I knew my anger was about to get the best of me, but I was fully willing to let it.

"Hilex! Don't you dare swear at me. Do you realise what you've done to us, to our family?"

He said in an orotund manner, looking at me, like I was the one who had betrayed him.

"I, father, was not the one who had an affair with the woman meant for my son!"

I bellowed harshly, not caring who heard on the other side of the walls. I turned around to leave but was stopped by my fathers words

"Don't you dare talk to me like that Hilex!"

He growled out, showing the curmudgeon behavior I knew too well.

"Why aren't you even trying to explain yourself?"

I asked turning to face him fully, the shock I felt clearly visible on my feature.

"I had and still have to put in a lot of work into this company to hold the place I have now, and sadly your insolence and lack of obedience will drag everything I've worked for to hell."

I stared at him bemused, clearly shocked and disappointed at the fact that he thought that I would ruin the company that I had worked so hard to make better. He never did see all the work and effort put into this company. He clearly didn't see the times that I drowned myself in my work just to get good outcomes for us! He clearly didn't see that I didn't have a life of my own or a relationship of my own because of this same God damn place! And he had the guts to stand there and tell me that!!

"You never did believe in me did you?"

I accused, glowering at him. The complete and utter betrayal I felt was clear as day.

"It's what's best for all of us."

He said not even answering my question. Up until now, he hadn't even answered the actual questions that I had asked.

"Where does the engagement fit into all of this? Why did you want me to get married to her?!"

I said pointing towards her direction, not even sparing her a glance.

"We need her families influence in order for all my hard work to pay off. I need to be the one to put all this into place, that's why it has to be me and Sofia, but it needs to be as furtive as possible. I need you son, cause you and Sofia together is something the media wants to see."

I was far beyond being disappointed at this point. He's basically saying he would use his own son as a pun to obtain power, just so he could be in control of everything. Not even trying to cover his avaricious intentions.

"What happened to you?".

I asked as my voice crack a bit at the end. The sadness that over flowed within me, was becoming to hard for me to swallow down, that I was starting to choke on it. He looked completely shocked at my question.

"I'm your son! Remember? Your only son, and basically you're telling me to shut up and be used as a pun, because it what's best for you!"

I exclaim pointing an accusing finger at him, but like always he face was unabashed and it infuriated me.

"You will do as I say, or el-"

"Or else what, huh?"

I taunted while glaring down at him.

"You'll kick me out of the company?"

I said feigning, shook and disappointment, which seemed to make him livid, and I enjoyed that very much.

"Do not test me Hilex."

He threatened peremptorily, as he stalked towards me until we were face to face, but I had zero intentions of backing down form this.

"Or what?"

I spat, as I starred him down.

"I, father, have the companies paper and ownership In my name. Remember that? When you made this disappointment of a son your only heir."

I bellowed out. He seemed shocked that I would bring that up, cause I was basically threatening to kick him out of his own company, and he didn't like that. He didn't like that at all.

"Hilex, I have spent far too long building this to have you come and ruin it".

He said with a sickening smile, that made my insides churn. He slowly inched closer to me until his face was directly at my ear.

"I would not hesitate to dispose of anyone who stand in the way of my plans".

He whispered to me, before walking passed and bumping shoulders with me on his way out. To say I was stunned would a huge understatement. He just threatened my life.

For what? A company?

I turned back and watched as he exited the door slamming it shut. My mouth was agape. I was shocked, scared even of what he meant by those words, but I was ready for a fight if that's what he wanted.

"Hilex?"

The nonentity I didn't even notice was still in the room spoke up, making me look back at her.

"I'm sorry you had to find out like this, it wasn't suppose to be this way".

She said in clear duplicity, but I wasn't gonna fall for it.

"GET. OUT"

I said in a dangerously low tone, holding in my anger the best I could. She wouldn't like that outcome if she didn't do as I said. She being a smart little bitch, got the signal and scoured out of my office. I slammed the door as loud and as hard I did, that the glass wall around it chattered to pieces. I knew no one would come up here if the didn't have a death wish.

I stalked over to my table, as I tried to control my anger, but I looked at files, the deeds, the contracts and they only seemed to make my blood boil. With one swipe, everything was on the ground, I flipped my desk over, and It landed with a loud thud. I let all my frustration out on my office, tearing and destroying all my disregarded efforts. I broke, tore and shattered everything in my path, not being able to get my anger under control.

After a good hour, my office was a mess; torn papers, broken glass, tripped carpet, shattered widow and bloody hands. Only leaving a picture of my beloved uncle who I held dear to my heart. He died when I was 6 years old. My memorise of him might all be somewhat a blur, but they were one of the happiest moments of my life, an I will forever cherish him for that. I didn't have any pictures of my mother, cause my father burned them all, a long time ago. I hated him for it, for not leaving me anything to remember her by, but nothing could be done about it. What's done is done.

With a sigh I got on my feet, carefully setting the picture on my barely standing desk, before heading for the door. With a wince turned the knob, due to my bloody hands, it was harder than it was suppose to be.

I walk out of my office and into the elevator heading straight down. I didn't want to think about what happened. I wanted to forget it completely, but how? With a ding I was out and into the now deserted lobby. Everyone had long left, seeing that it was already passed 8:00PM, and I was a little relieved at that, cause I didn't want to see their faces reflex fear for the actions ensued by my anger. I can't help but blame myself a little, even if there was no reason too.

Maybe if there was something I did differently, then this wouldn't have happened

I thought to myself in a sad tone. I got out of the building and into the nights breeze once again, heading towards my car with a few greeting from the security personnel here and there, but I only replied with nod, not feeling like even lifting my eye balls.

I got to my cars, and unlocked the door, got in, started the ignition, held the wheel with a pained hiss and headed home.

I arrived at my home not long after, I wouldn't really call it a house of my own, cause I owned a floor in my fath... My hotel and it was far from what I wanted but it was the kind of life a man like me was expected to live. I parked my car in my private lot, before heading to the hotel. I walked straight towards the entrance, but noticed a few flashing cameras in the bushes.

It was almost 9:00PM! What the fuck are they still doing here!?

I thought bewildered at these demons in human skin. I moved swiftly into the entrance before they could even notice I was there. I signalled the security men not to let them in, as I made my way to my private elevator and headed to my floor, which was the highest in the hotel. The elevator dinged open revealing, my living room to me.

I breath a sign of relief as I found this to be my Elysian haven on my most stressful days.

I walked slowly entering my parlour, while taking off my tie, and plunked myself down on one of my sofa, breathing slowly as today's drama start to evade my mind. I didn't want to think about it, but how could I not! This isn't something I could just forget.

"Shit!"

The voice exclaimed, followed by the sound of braking glass, plus multiple other curses that followed after. The voice seemed to come from my kitchen. I might have been at alert or even scared if I didn't already recognise it right away. I immediately rushed over to the kitchen to check on the voice of the person I knew all so well.

I entered my kitchen to meet a couple of broken glasses and Travis hunched over the oven, doing God knows what.

"Travis!?"

I yelled, startling him, making him scream his signature girly screech, which I have always teased him for.
He turned to me his eyes wide in horror, before they quickly faltered in recognition. He sighed in relief, his hand over his chest.

"Dude. You almost gave me a heart attack, and what the fuck happened to you!?."

He said giving a once-over at my appearance and bloody hands.

"What are you doing in my house!? I thought you went to Italy?"

I asked ignoring his question. Travis is american but is half Italian maternally. He got news a couple of weeks ago that his grandma got hurt badly, so he went to stay with her, for at least a month or two or so I thought.

"Stop yelling!"

He snapped turning back around and continued his activities that were unknown to me. I made my way closer to him to get a better look at what the heck he was doing. I stared and stared but I didn't understand the concoction he was using to mess up my oven.

"What the hell is that?"

I said gesturing at what was cooking on the gas.

"It's a secret recipe I learned from Italy, that I thought I'd try out."

He said giving me a sideways glance.

"And you thought you should do it in a kitchen that is not your own?".

I said, giving him a pointed look, but he just grinned in response.

"I actually came to apologise for the way I talked to you earlier, but I got bored and I decided to do this."

He said with a shrug, before turning back to the sizzling pan.

"Soooo... Where's my apology?"

I said, arching my eyebrows and leaning on the fridge, crossing my arms, in a cocky manner.

"Well I saw the news, which means I was right; Sofia was a scumbag who had an affair with your father and they probably did the horizontal tango together, so an apology isn't needed from my end".

He said nonchalantly, not really knowing how deep his words cut.

"How did they get that much information?"

I bellowed, anger brewing within me once again.

"Dude, It's the press, they find out everything".

He said in a duh tone. I sighed in frustration, the stress creeping back into me rapidly.

"Are you okay?"

He asked not looking back at me, but the deep concern in his voice was clearly shown.

"No".

I said, seeing no reason to lie about it. I was not okay, I mean how could I be? After everything that happened today, I'm surprised I haven't crumbled to pieces.

"Do you wanna talk about it, over a meal?"

He said looking at me fully this time, carefully observing my expressions. I knew he wanted to know if I was being honest with my answers or not, cause if I wasn't he'd know right away. We've known each other since diapers, it would be hurtful if he didn't know me that well.

"I'd like to have dinner, but I really, really don't wanna talk about it."

I sighed out bitterly, not even bothering to hide the pain I felt from my best and only friend.

"It's okay. Whip out some beer, lets watch some TV!"

He hollered as he turned off the gas while setting out plates, to dish the food in. Travis was really that friend that everybody needed. I walked over to the fridge to look for some beer, not even sure I had any.

"I'll turn on the TV. Get the beer, and come over quick".

He said taking the plates of food, and retreating into the living room.

"Mhnn". I said with a nod, signally him that I heard. I looked through my fridges, still looking for any sign of beer, when I heard the TV turning on. I pulled my hair in frustration, not being able to find a single beer. I don't usually drink beer so it wasn't a surprise to me if I didn't have any. I looked through the last fridge, having three different fridges for reasons unknown to me. Just another extravagant way of living my father had insisted on. I almost cried out in Joy when I spotted a carton of beer, really far down in the fridge. I stretched my hands far down to retrieve it when Travis's voice called out to me from the living room.

"Um, Hilex could you come here for a second, there's something I think you're gonna wanna see".

He hollered from the parlour, while I was desperately trying to reach for this stupid carton of beer.

"Yeah, I'll be there in a second, just need to get to this stupid beer".

I said frustratedly, while reaching in deeper to retrieve it, I finally got my hands on it and pulled it out, with a loud cry of victory.

"Hilex come here right now!"

He screamed sounding very bemused.

What the hell?

I thought in my head, while grabbing the carton, and some glasses and headed into the living room.

"Don't get your boxer in a twi-".

I started mockingly but was immediately cut of by his question.

"Who is this?"

He asked gesturing at the TV, I stared at him questionably, not understanding what he was referring to. I turned to the television only to be met with the doleful face of the Goddess from the restraunt earlier. I body instantly numb as if on reflex. The sound of shattered glass making an impact on the ground, made me realise that I had dropped both the glasses and the beer I was holding, but I didn't care about that. I walked closer staring at her scared and teary eyes as they bombarded her with question after question.

How could I forget about her!

I thought to myself, the guilt eating into me. I watched closely as she tried her best to answer some of the questions she was being asked in shock and fear, but obviously getting very uncomfortable she tried to push through, but they wouldn't let her. And the part that filled me with so much guilt and grief was the fact that she had called out to me for help. She kept screaming my name.

I was too selfish with my actions. I forced her to stay at that restraunt, even when she had said she wanted to leave, then I left her there only caring about what I was feeling at that moment, not considering what the press would do to her, and now I watched what my actions ensued. I watched her as she continued to scream my name but to no avail I had stupidly abandoned, left to be eaten alive by those vultures. She was never going to forgive me.

"Paparazzi are seriously messed up in the head. WTF!"

He exclaimed, sounding bewildered, obviously watching it as closely as I was. I wanted to nod, agree with him in anyway, but I couldn't move. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Something....something about her agony brought a pain in my chest that I wasn't able to explain. It tore me apart completely.

I kept watching, even if my mind begged me to stop, I didn't comply. I glued my eyes to the screen, watching as she stuttered, cried and begged for them to leave her alone. At one point she looked really sick like she was gonna pass out, but they kept clicking the cameras over and over until she vomited right there on the ground under the rain. My heart ached knowing that I had caused this.

I saw the look of disbelief on her face, as they just kept filming and clicking, regardless of what state she was in. Obviously realising what a bunch of demons they were. She screamed as her tears flowed freely, begging them to leave her alone once again, but they wouldn't.

I couldn't save her when she needed me the most, but I will find her and I will get on my knees and beg for her forgiveness no matter what.

I watched as closely as I could. Every detail. Every word. Every click, so as to figure out ways at which I would destroy them all!
