Chapter 4
John’s POV
It had been a few days since Burr had joined our group, and honestly, he was fitting in more than I thought he would. We actually got along with him pretty well. Sure, we were wary at first, but he did hang out with Jefferson.
We were currently sitting around our table at the coffee shop, drinking our normal drinks. Alex, as always, was at his computer. Every once in awhile, though, I’d notice his beautiful chocolate eyes glancing up at mine before flicking back to the screen. Laf and Herc were just talking to each other while holding hands. They were such a cute couple. I was currently talking to Aaron.
“Jefferson won’t stop texting me, asking where I’ve been,” he complained.
“Block his number. Or text him back telling him to leave you alone.”
“I’d rather block it. If I texted that to him, he’d literally track me down and kill me. One does not simply leave Jefferson’s group without a punishment of some kind.” Fear was evident in his eyes. “The last time someone left, well… have you ever heard of Michael Thompson?”
“Yeah. I’ve heard the name from time to time. Pretty sure I have a couple of classes with him. But…”
“He hasn’t been in class lately, has he?” I shook my head, and he continued. “Michael Thompson was in Jefferson’s group for a while, and he decided to break away. He’s been missing for about a week now. I think he’s either hiding or…”
“Yeah, I get it. So you don’t tell Jefferson to screw off. How do you plan on getting away from him?”
Burr didn’t reply to that. Instead, he kept his gaze on the door, eyes wide in terror. Curious, I turned around, and there he was. “Well speak of the Devil,” I muttered as Thomas Jefferson sauntered over to us. I could hear the silence in the room. Alex wasn’t even typing. Instead, he was shooting a deadly glare at Jefferson.
“Burr? What do you think you’re doing hanging out with them?” Thomas sneered.
“What does it matter to you?” I asked, drawing his attention away from Aaron. “You don’t really care about him.”
“Oh, but he’s one of mine, you see? And my people aren’t allowed to hang out with yours unless I specifically say so. So, Burr,” he turned his gaze away from me and towards our new friend. “I repeat. Why are you hanging out with them?”
Aaron took a shaky breath before murmuring, “I have a life outside of you.” It was so quiet, the only reason I know what he said is because I read his lips.
“What did you say?” Thomas asked, the threat clear in his tone.
“N-nothing,” Burr said, turning away.”
“Oh no.” Thomas grabbed Aaron’s shirt and yanked him out of his seat. “You said something. And I want to know what it was. And you’re going to tell me.”
Hercules stood up and marched over to Jefferson, a look much like the one Alex wore screwing up his face. “Here’s what’s going to happen. You are going to leave him alone and get the fuck out of our lives. Then, maybe, I won’t kill you.” Well. Herc never cussed unless he was either really happy or seriously pissed. Yeah, you had better back off, Jefferson, I thought.
But of course, Thomas had that smug look on his face. “Like I said. He’s mine. He made the choice to hang out with me, and he stays in my group.” He glanced at Aaron, who was squirming in the Virginian’s grip. The look on his face made it look like he believed Jefferson would kill him or something.
I turned my head as I heard another person standing up. Alex moved to Herc’s side. Laf and I were quick to follow. Four to one. The odds were in our favor. “You can’t win this Jefferson,” I said. “You’re outmanned.”
Scowling, Thomas let go of Burr, who fell to the floor given he was actually lifted off of the ground. “Don’t think you’ll always be this lucky,” he growled. “I’ll be back with my people to retrieve our member. And Burr,” his gaze turned to the boy curled into a ball on the floor, “you may want to rethink your choices.” He spun on his heel and walked away.
I waited a moment before kneeling down to Burr. “Aaron, it's okay. He's gone.” I helped him to his feet, and the look on his face broke my heart a little, I won't lie. He looked like a kicked puppy, but ten times more pathetic.
“He's going to kill me,” he mumbled, shaking uncontrollably.
“No, we won't let him,” Herc growled.
“Oui. Mon ami, he will not get anywhere near you.”
“I'll tear his insides out with my bare hands before I let him get into your line of sight,” Alex signed. I didn't translate this time, simply nodding in agreement.
“We’ll be your bodyguards for now. But… we can't do this alone.” Herc and Laf immediately seemed to perk up as I smiled. “Alex, Burr, I think it's time you two meet the Schuyler sisters.”
(TIME SKIP)
I knocked on the door of Room 221B in the A building. Waiting for a moment, I heard footsteps approach the door before silence. Then there was a squeal of delight and the sound of a lock sliding back. The door swung inwards to reveal a girl with curly brown hair wearing a yellow Sunday dress. The girl proceeded to engulf me in a huge hug, which I returned. “John!” she yelped happily before moving to the others. “Laf! Herc!” She stopped, smile fading into a look of confusion, in front of Burr, who looked a little uncomfortable.
“He’s with us, Peggy. He’s actually a pretty cool guy,” I assured.
The smile returned. “Well then, welcome to the squad, Burr.” Then she turned to Alex. “And who might this young man be?”
“This is Alexander Hamilton,” Herc said with a smile.
Peggy gasped. “The Alexander Hamilton? The one who beat up Thomas Jefferson?” She looked really excited as Alex nodded shyly. “Oh my god. Angelica’s going to want to meet you. Come on in guys!” She shoved our group into her dorm room. “Angelica! Eliza!” she yelled, and two girls came running into the room.
“What is it, Pegs?” Eliza, the one in the blue dress with straight brown hair, asked. Then she noticed us, and, much like Peggy, hugged me, Laf, and Herc tightly. “Oh it’s so good to see you guys again!”
“Uh, why is Burr with you guys? And who’s the new kid?” Angelica, the one in pink with curly brown hair like Peggy’s, questioned.
“Oh, Burr left Jefferson’s group, which is why we’re here in the first place,” I said.
“And new kid?”
“Alexander Hamilton,” Laf said.
Angelica grinned an impossibly wide grin. “Well he’s welcome here any time.” She walked up to Alex, throwing an arm over his shoulder. “I can really respect you for what you did. I mean, who punches Jefferson and lives to tell about it?”
“He did more than punch him,” I laughed. “The man never saw it coming. It was great!”
Alexander looked between all of us as we talked. Eventually, he actually sat down with us, choosing to sit next to me, which made me blush and smile. I mean, there were so many other empty seats, and he chose this. He may have leaned against me a bit. Why did he have to be so cute? And of course, it seemed as though the sisters noticed.
“Aww, you two would be so cute together!” Eliza commented.
“I ship it!” Peggy shouted.
Angelica just grinned knowingly.
Alex sat up straight after that, and I glared at the sisters, which just made them giggle.
“Hey Alex,” Angie said. “Where are you from?”
His face fell immediately and his eyes darkened, just like last time. “Uh, that’s kind of a topic we don’t bring up,” I said. “He doesn’t really like to talk about his past.”
“Okay, let’s change the topic then,” Peggy said. “Opinions on Jefferson?”
Almost immediately, the spark in Alex’s eye returned. “He’s a douchebag who needs to take his ego and shove it up his ass,” he signed.
The sisters and I burst out laughing. “Oh my god, I’m liking you more and more Alex,” Peggy said.
“What?” Herc said. “What did he say?”
“Oui. There are some here who don’t know sign language,” Laf added, and Burr nodded in agreement.
However the rest of us were too busy laughing to answer them. Alex, who was just smiling widely, typed it out so the three could join in on the laughter. After about three minutes, we finally settled down and began talking and catching up. Thirty minutes later, we actually started to talk about why we were there in the first place.
“So basically, Aaron asked Alex if he could hang out with us, and when Alex said yes, he decided to wait until after class to ask me if it was okay. I didn’t want to, but most people deserve a chance. But Burr turned out to be a super cool guy. Did you know that he’s-” Burr covered my mouth before I could finish that sentence. Kind of annoyed, I licked his hand, which caused him to let go, exclaiming in disgust. “Okay, I won’t tell them about that. But we’ve been hanging out with him for a few days, and today we were hanging out at the coffee shop. Then Jefferson comes in and demands for Burr to explain why he’s hanging out with us, and when he wouldn’t tell him why, Jefferson threatened Burr. But we take care of our own.” I wrapped an arm around Burr as a way to show that he’s one of us. “So we all gathered around Jefferson, since he decided to come alone, and he left. Which was smart of him. But he said he’ll be back with his gang, and so we’re here to ask you for help.” I finished there and waited for a response.
Silence was all there was for about thirty seconds before all three Schuyler sisters said at once: “Of course we’ll help.” Angelica added, “I’d love to get dad in on this. Oh the things he could do to him…”
“Oh yes. We are definitely getting dad. He hates the Jeffersons with a passion,” Eliza said.
“And Washington,” Herc said. “He can get really scary when he’s mad.”
“Alright, so we have the seven of us plus your dad and Washington. So nine. Jefferson’s group is how large again?” I said.
“Uh, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Charles Lee, James Reynolds, “King” George, Thomas Conway, John Adams, John Jay, James Monroe, and Andrew Jackson. So ten,” Burr said.
“Alright so nine to ten. Who else could we get to at least tie it?” Angelica wondered.
“Um, there’s something I haven’t told you guys,” Peggy said, looking around. “But she may be able to help. Do you guys remember Maria Reynolds?"
~~
Hey guys! So I finally got around to introducing the Schuyler sisters! Also, this Michael Thompson is a name that I pulled out of the blue. I still haven't gotten any comments about whether Seabury should be a main character or not, so that's why he wasn't mentioned in this chapter.
So I've been writing this story somewhere else in case this gets hacked or deleted or something so that I have a backup, but it's not letting me access it at home. Yet I pull it up at school and it works perfectly fine! So this entire chapter was written at school while I have a test tomorrow. Fun... BUT CHAPTER!
Wow, I really enjoy writing this story, and the comments I get make me smile every day, no matter how I'm already feeling. So thank you guys for being wonderful, and have an amazing day! Until next time!
