Chapter Three
It wasn't hard to find the cause of the alarm going off. As soon as the new Avengers walked outside, they were greeted by a scene of overturned cars, fires burning all around, people running for their lives. In the center of all this, a tall, grizzled man stood facing Avengers tower. He wore a strange uniform and gave orders to the dozens of figures that kept wrecking the streets of the city. Upon closer inspection, the figures were the other high school kids that weren't on the Avenger's tower tour. Their eyes were almost unseeing as if they had been possessed by something. They weren't phased when an overturned car exploded in front of them. The new Avengers turned their attention towards the grinning man staring at them from across the plaza.
"Ah, so the Avengers finally decided to join the party!"
"Who are you and why are you doing this to New York?!" James shouted from the front of the group
"You don't remember me? I'm a little heartbroken, but I'm sure we could work something out." The man in the suit smiled and nodded as if agreeing with himself, "You see, I want something from you-"
"Blah blah blah! All these villains do in monologue, I say we take him out and continue with our day." Emily interrupted, waving her staff around way more than necessary.
"Excuse me but you're being extremely rude. I was offering you a compromise!" The man stamped his foot.
"Who cares? You're acting like a big baby." Emily shouted back.
"You're acting like a bunch of teenagers!" The man argued.
"Guys, maybe we shouldn't go picking fights, we don't know what he has up his sleeve and he seems to have control over our classmates. Not to mention, we got our powers literally five minutes ago. How do you think this is going to go for us?" Alissa tried to reason with the group that seemed to be getting overconfident.
"We've seen the news reports on them. We know how these things work. As soon as we take out the leader, The rest will fall!" Roger spat back, raising his bow.
"Maybe Alissa has a point-" Cristine tried to defend her friend.
"Ready guys? Let's go!" Mason shouted as he released his hold on his hammer, sending him flying towards the enemy.
As Mason sped off, most of the group followed, Alissa, Cristine, Delilah, Grace, Charles, Joey, and Ruby hesitated for a split second. Cristine turned her head towards Alissa, "Should we go after them?" Alissa was silent for a moment, then narrowed her eyes "If we don't, they'll get themselves killed." She then ran after the group that was charging towards the enemy. Charles backed off and ran back inside Avengers tower, not wanting anything to do with this. The rest of the group looked at each other and decided to follow as one big group.
Mason felt the wind whipping through his hair and his hammer dragged him forwards, attached to his wrist. The man was about twenty feet away from him and closing fast. Mason put his feet down to stop but the hammer kept dragging him forwards, panic came in and Mason tried his best to get away from the enchanted hammer. The man sidestepped and easily avoided Mason who crashed into a building, making it collapse on top of him. James flew through the air using the jets connected to the hands and feet of the metal suit. Unfortunately, he was moving pretty slow because he was having trouble with the stabilizers. Eventually, he just settled for running. Ally came around the corner after flanking the man's forces and she used her new metal arm to punch him. The man saw this coming and jumped out of the way as Ally was thrown off balance by the unexpected weight of the metal arm. Emily tried mind controlling the man, but he hit her staff out of her hands before she could get anywhere near his chest. The man told some of his forces to hold her down while he was dealing with the rest of the Avengers. Cristine used her powers successfully for the first time and helped Roger onto the roof of a nearby building where he was attempting to use the bow and arrow, his new senses kept throwing him off target and he missed almost all of his arrows. Grace ran in to help Ally off of the floor and kicked the man in the face, the first actual hit on the stranger. Alissa had crawled onto the side of a building and webbed the man's hand before he could punch Grace. The man turned his attention towards Alissa and pulled on the webbing with his other hand, dragging Alissa towards him and off of the building. Phillip was still trying to figure out his powers and kept running halfway across town before he came back to the plaza. Every time he tried to help with his powers, he missed his target. Steve tried his best with what he had, but with almost no training, all he could use was a sling ring which didn't help in this situation. Ruby and Devin became tiny but kept almost getting stepped on, eventually, Ruby punched the man since he had wings and he flew backward, but got up again, swatting at her. Jake and Lewis were trying to figure out how to fly and never did get off the ground, the man's forces surrounded them both. Delilah was trying to figure out her weapons and kept activating things she didn't need, she ended up getting surrounded by the man's forces as well. Jacob and Joey were actually doing pretty well, taking turns hitting the man and also getting hit themselves. Eventually, they pushed the man back enough to where he hit the side of a building. The man shakily got up and felt his nose, it was clearly broken and bent out of shape. Joey and Jacob stood over him.
"Any last words before you go to jail?" Joey asked.
"Hail Hydra.." the man said very clearly before he hit the wall behind him with his elbow.
Joey and Jacob looked up as small amounts of rubble hit their head, the building was swaying back and forth, groaning as the wooden beams that held it up snapped. Jacob and Joey ran the other direction, just barely escaping the building before it collapsed with a huge cloud of dust. The man had been crushed. The man's forces didn't seem very phased, but retreated as one unit in an orderly fashion, heading away from the city.
Jacob and Joey panted and heaved themselves off of the floor, Jacob looked at Joey "Shouldn't we go after them?" he gestured towards the army of possessed beings marching down the street.
Joey took a breath before answering "No, we barely survived this time, let's just get our friends and regroup."
It wasn't long before everyone was accounted for. No one was seriously injured, but a few of them had some scrapes and bruises. Cristine had shielded herself just before the rubble showered over everyone. She seemed to have done it out of instinct, but she obviously couldn't do it on command yet.
In a shaky voice, she called out to everyone, "Are we all still alive?"
"Barely..." Alissa groaned.
"What the heck was that?! We could have done so much better!" Lewis blurted out.
"Maybe we should have made a plan first!" Cristine shouted, getting angry from the shock.
A few people went around helping each other up. Phillip suddenly appeared back at the scene, "Sorry I missed so much. I got lost downtown and couldn't get back."
Emily picked up her scepter and rolled her shoulders, "Guys, I don't think we can fight blindly like we just did...we need to figure out how to use our powers.."
"Ya think?!" Mason exclaimed having just gotten out from under the crashed building, "This stupid hammer doesn't listen!"
"All I really know how to do with this suit is get in and out of it..." James sighed heavily in defeat.
"How are we supposed to practice our powers while on a school trip?" Steve asked.
"Your mom!" Jake exclaimed doing a mini whip dance move.
"Not the time." Lewis snapped, crossing his arms and looking down at his outfit, "Seriously, I want my old body back!" he groaned loudly when suddenly his body changed into his original one. He blinked a little and looked at himself, soon seeing he was indecent. His face turned bright red in embarrassment, running inside to find something to put on. The group of men laughed at this spectacle and shook their heads.
"Guys we need to figure out how to work these powers before we do anything else." Alissa pointed out.
"How are we going to avoid the teachers getting on our case?" Joey questioned. The group of kids then looked to stare at Emily who was pretty much the only one able to get the teachers to do what the group needed them to do.
The female blinked in confusion, "What? What are you all staring at?" she looked at the scepter in her hand and opened her mouth in an "oh" as she nodded, "Yeah I got it now, but I doubt they are going to let me touch them with something sharp. I also don't want to accidentally stab them.."
"Uh, yeah don't stab the teachers." Ruby exclaimed nervously.
The other female gave her a look, but then sighed, "I also think the teachers will remember me."
"Well I guess now would be a good time to practice how to use your powers." Jacob shrugged.
"We all do." Phillip sassed.
The group of kids went inside, Lewis having found clothes and rejoining them. Some of them looked as if they were planning the next plan of attack. Others looked as if they were just trying to figure out what the heck they were wearing and or trying to figure out how to work their powers. Charles rejoined the gang, looking a little confused with himself. Steve looked at his phone, getting a call from an unknown number, shaking his head he shoved it back in his pocket. The phone rang again immediately with the same caller ID, groaning he hung up again. This time a golden circle appeared and a man stepped through, closing it behind him.
"Uh, who are you?" Grace questioned the man.
"My name is Wong, I came for Doctor Strange." he motioned to the male with the eye of Agamotto around his neck.
"Are you the one who keeps calling me?" the male questioned, raising his eyebrows.
"I am, but you did not answer."
"Yeah that's because I take calls from unknown numbers I don't if you're a Nigerian prince trying to 'give' me money"
"Your jokes are not funny Doctor, come on we have to get back to the Sanctum."
"I'm not leaving my friends, sorry" Steve gave the man a look
"Look, we aren't the same people you know or who you think you knew, we're just students who wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time." Joey tried to explain.
Wong narrowed his eyes, looking at all of them closely, "I don't see any difference, you look how you always have."
"Alright how about this, we all forgot how to use our powers and we need a mentor to learn them again." Alissa restated.
"If that is the case, I cannot help you all, I can only help Steve." he said blinking to himself, that didn't seem right, he could have sworn Strange's first name was different. He shook his head shrugging it off.
"Mason!" Emily suddenly said in excitement and realization.
"What is it now?" he questioned.
"Asgard! We can go to Asgard and learn how to use our powers."
"How the heck are we supposed to get to Asgard if we don't even know how the real Loki and Thor did it?"
"Oh um...well, that I don't know...we can shout at the sky to take us there?" she suggested.
"Uhuh, yeah sure, while we're at it we do a chant for the rain to come too."
"You can probably do that." she grinned.
"You know what." he didn't finish it and shook his head sighing.
"Guys, I think we should find help. Maybe we could find the mentors of our corresponding superheroes like Mahki and Emily are trying to do." Alissa piped up.
"That's easier than it sounds. What about the people who didn't have mentors?" Cristine questioned.
"Well-" Alissa began.
"I've got it! You guys, I've just figured something out!" Emily interrupted.
"What is it?" James joined in.
"We can all go to different places to train and check back in regularly so the teachers don't think we're doing anything suspicious." Emily exclaimed while looking up something on her phone
"That's basically what I just said but ok." Alissa sighed, "Where do you want us to go?"
Emily thought for a moment, focusing on her phone before she finally found what she was looking for. She held up her phone which had a map on it with tiny blue dots on different areas.
"Here! Mason and I can go to Asgard, Steve can go with Mr. Wong here, Devin and Ruby can stay in Avengers tower with Hank Pym, Delilah and Jake can go to a nearby Air Force base, Grace can go to a training facility that is located in New York, and Joey can go to a military base." Emily pointed out each place on her phone as she spoke
"What about me?!" Ally and Jacob said at the same time
"And the rest of us?" Phillip pointed out
"Well... there is a semester-long class at Paso High that studies vibranium properties and military tactics, Ally, you could go there." Emily said slowly as though she wasn't sure that would be the best idea
"Why don't I just go to the military base with Joey?" Ally asked
"Because I don't think the White Wolf would be very welcomed there, even with Captain America to protect you." Emily stated, "At least at the high school you could be safe."
"Aren't you forgetting about someone?" Jacob impatiently interrupted
"No, I didn't forget about you, I was just answering her question first!" Emily snapped back, "You will go to a week-long class in Wakanda since it's now open to the public, you should learn about their culture and fighting methods and come back stronger than ever."
Jacob seemed happy with that and retreated as the remaining people looked at Emily expectantly.
Emily sighed, "Since there are no mentors for the rest of you, you'll just have to figure out your powers on your own, maybe stick around the area and help out small crimes?"
Alissa smiled "I guess I'll just be a friendly neighborhood spider ma- er... girl."
Wong nodded his head, he had been standing quietly for a long time, "Should we go Doctor Strange?"
Steve looked up at him and then at his friends who nodded, he turns his attention back to Wong, letting out a sigh "Yes, I'm ready, let's go."
With the motions of the sling ring, they were both gone in an instant after taking the first step. Emily turned to Mason, "I guess we should be going next."
Mason groaned "We've been over this, you know I don't know how to-"
His sentence was cut off as a beam of light came soaring down through the clouds. There was a moment where all you could see was the magnificent colors the light brought with it, but that moment passed and when the group's eyes adjusted they realized Emily and Mason were gone.
"Where did they go!?!" Jacob questioned, quite panicked
"Haven't you ever seen them do that before? They just went to Asgard." Cristine stated
"I wonder how they did that." James looked up at the sky, studying it in case the light came back
"My guess is they didn't. They probably just got called back by the guardian that controls the light." Alissa commented, walking over to Cristine
"Huh... well, shouldn't we all be going to the places Emily told us to go?" Grace asked
"I don't know about you, but I have no idea where these places are." Alissa replied moments before everyone's phone rang at the same time. It was a message from Emily that had the map of where everyone was supposed to go attached to it. "Oh.."
"There are some extra jets in Avengers tower that we could use to get to our destinations. I know none of us know how to fly but they're mostly self-driving so we won't have to." Grace exclaimed, bounding towards the stairs.
"Alright, let's just take one and input all the locations we need to go, it can take us there one by one." Ally added while following Grace.
The rest agreed and the group of Grace, Ally, Delilah, Jake, Jacob, and Joey all headed towards the aircraft hangars. Just then, Hank Pym came around the corner asking for Devin and Ruby.
"I guess our mentor is already here, we'll stay at Avengers tower to learn how to control our powers." Ruby laughed slightly while Hank Pym was pestering her to quickly follow him
"What about the rest of us?" Phillip questioned, turning to face the remaining people
"Well, we can't stay here. It's too obvious for an attack. We can come back if we need anything but I think the majority of our training should be done in discreet places." Alissa replied
"Alissa's right, maybe we can find some old warehouses or something?" Cristine agreed
"Well, I think that Charles and I should use one of Stark's old labs to train, we don't want an angry hulk getting out onto the streets of New York. Plus, I need to figure out how to fly, it would be better in a simulated area than in the actual city." James pointed out
"Alright, who wants to come with me to find an abandoned warehouse?" Alissa asked, slightly laughing at how ridiculous that sounded. Everyone except James, Charles, and Jacob raised their hand. "Perfect, let's go!"
