Chapter Twenty Four Second Guessing
Skye sighed as she sat in her room. She looked at herself in the mirror. It was Monday night. Her wedding was Friday. Am I really ready? Is this the right time? Are we rushing into this too soon? Am I just letting Coulson be a fanboy and control our lives? Skye sighed and shook herself. I need to talk to Ward. He's my fiancé. He probably feels the same way too.
❃
This is the perfect time to get married! Ward grinned at himself happily as he brushed his teeth. I am definitely ready to get married to Skye! It's about time we tied this whole thing up! I've been wanting to marry her ever since I saw her walk down those steps to my cell......
Ward rinsed his mouth and combed his slick, black hair. Then he heard a knock at the door.
He opened it to see Skye.
"Hey," Skye said. "Can we talk?"
"Umm, sure," Ward replied and stepped outside his room as he closed the door behind him. "What's up?"
"Come on," Skye said and grabbed his hand.
"I need to talk privately. It seems like whenever we talk here we always get ease dropped on."
"Ok....." Ward said and trusted his fiancé.
She led him to the plane hanger and into a Quinn jet.
"Skye where are we-"
"Just follow me."
She led him to the pilot's cot and sat him down. She sat in the co pilot's seat. She sighed and folded her hands. Wow. This is harder than I thought.
"Umm," Skye started off. "How are you feeling......about us getting married in five days."
Ward grinned at the thought. "Great!"
"You're not feeling nervous?" Skye asked.
"Nope! Just excited."
"But what about the timing?" Skye added.
"I think the timings perfect!" Ward answered. "Couldn't be better!"
"Perfect?! Couldn't be better?!" Skye exploded. "Ward the timing couldn't be worse! Simmons and May hate you, Fitz isn't fond of you either, and none of them know about this! We don't even know who's going to be watching us get married, it seems like Coulson is taking over the whole thing, we still need to pick out your tux and my dress, and I still haven't gotten your ring!" Skye yelled as her eyes watered up with tears. She bit her fingernails as her emotions came pouring out. "I'm broke. There! I said it! I can't afford your ring. Any ring! Lincoln needed money a while back, so I gave him all of mine. He needed to start up his life again, and I felt bad for him. He still hasn't paid me back yet. So there," Skye said as tears streamed down her face. "That's how I feel about the wedding."
Ward stared at her, his mouth hanging open in shock. He made a croaking noise in his throat.
Skye's been holding all this in all this time and I didn't even know?! How?!
Skye began to cry and break into a melt down. Ward came out of his thoughts and immediately leaped out of his chair towards her.
"Skye, come here," he said and wrapped his arms around her. He picked her up, bridal style, and carried her back to his seat. She sat on his lap as he cradled her comfortingly.
"Skye, why didn't you tell me this? And how did I not know?!" Ward asked, confused. "I'm a specialist! I should have read you! How did you keep this from me?!"
Skye shrugged and cleared the tears from her face. "I've been training with May again. She's been teaching me stuff. How do you think I kept May from figuring out we were engaged?"
Ward sighed and combed his fingers through Skye's hair soothingly. "Skye. You need to tell me these things. I could have helped you."
"How could you have helped me?!" Skye asked. "Huh?! What could you have done?!"
"I could have comforted you," Ward said with big eyes peering down at her. "I'm practically your husband. I'm supposed to take care of you."
Skye sighed as tears came in her eyes again. She didn't want to cry in front of Ward. It was embarrassing. She was supposed to keep her feelings hidden. She buried her face in Ward's shoulder to hide her face.
"Hey," he said and gently stroked her head. "It's ok."
"How is it ok?" Skye asked, her voice muffled.
"It's ok because it's never the perfect time to get married," Ward said. "Something always goes wrong. I'm sure every couple goes through second guessing."
Skye sighed and lifted up her head to look up at Ward.
"But I think it's the right time," Ward went on as he smiled and looked down at his little fiancé. "Even if everything goes wrong, at least will be together, right?"
Skye smiled and nodded her head. "I'm sorry I sprang this on you. I can't believe I second guessed myself. I love you so much."
Ward grinned. "I love you too."
Skye sighed and grinned back. "I think I need to be reminded of how much you love me."
Ward smirked playfully. "Oh really? Like I haven't given you enough examples?"
"I need another one," Skye added playfully as their noses touched.
"Well I guess I can give you one more," Ward replied.
Then he kissed her. Skye sighed, satisfied. She laid her head on his shoulder. They had a moment of peace.
"We should go," Skye said. "Coulson's probably
wondering where we are."
❃
That night, Skye sat in her bedroom and looked at herself in the mirror. But it was different. She seemed ready this time. She seemed determined. Then she heard a knock on the door. She went to answer it. It was Coulson.
"This came in the mail," he said. "It's from Lincoln."
"Thanks," Skye said, surprised.
She closed the door and sat on her bed. She slowly opened the envelope. Ten, thousand dollars. Skye screamed. She leaped up and down and grabbed her computer. She started to write an email to Lincoln, thanking him for everything. Finally, she began to look at wedding rings.
