Chapter Twenty Nine Signals
Skye hid in her bedroom, curled up in her bed. She was on her laptop looking up something for Coulson. She heard her phone beep. She sighed. Probably another one of Ward's annoying "I love you," texts. But it wasn't. She looked at her phone to see this:
Text:
You need to get back to working for Shield.
- Ward
What?! I am working for Shield! What does he know?! Skye sighed and texted him back:
Text:
I am working for Shield! Just because you don't see me, doesn't mean I'm not working. Mind your own business.
Ward stared at her text and texted back:
Text:
You don't need to be rude I just want to talk.
Skye glared at her phone and wrote:
Text:
I'm not being rude! You're the one that won't give me any space! Back off!
Ward sighed and wrote back:
Text:
It's been three weeks Skye! I have backed off! But we should have been married almost a month ago! That's something to talk about!
Skye sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. Ward was right; she needed to face him. They needed to talk. She closed her laptop and threw some clothes on. She ran a brush through her hair and looked herself in the mirror. She slowly walked to her door and slid out. Ward was standing right outside her door waiting patiently.
"Skye," he said and hugged her. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah."
"Great. Because I need to tell you something," Ward said.
"So do I."
"You go first," they said in unison.
"No, you go first," they said in sync again.
Ward sighed. "Ok. We need to talk about the wedding. When do you want to get married? As soon as possible? In a couple days? Weeks?"
"Ward-"
"And do you want to elope? Or have an actual wedding?"
"Ward," Skye interrupted.
He looked at her.
"I......I don't think I'm ready," Skye stammered as tears built up in her eyes.
Ward stared at her for a long time, fighting tears back. Leave it to Hydra to spoil our relationship, again.
"Skye please," Ward said and put his hands on her shoulders. "You have to get past that experience."
"But I can't!" Skye yelled and backed away. "You almost killed me!"
"But I didn't!" Ward exclaimed as tears filled his eyes.
They stared at each other for a long time. Then Skye shook her head and backed away.
"I can't do this," she said sadly, and turned to go back in her room.
Ward thought he heard his heart shatter.
❃
"Skye?" Coulson knocked on the door. "Meet me in my office. Something's up."
Skye sighed and got ready to go see Coulson.
When she walked in, the whole team including Ward was there. She slowly walked in awkwardly and stood by Bobbi.
"We need to save that agent," Coulson said. "I know we got a little off track with-"
Skye cleared her throat and glared at Coulson. Don't bring it up.
Coulson looked at her. "With what just happened, but we need to stay focused and rescue her. She's loyal to Shield and deserves our help. So, we'll be pairing up. Bobbi, Hunter, and May will be going to through the back entrance of the base. Fitz, Simmons, and Mack will be staying in one of the Quinn Jets to hook up the cameras and look at the base from afar. Skye and Ward will go in on their own to cause a distraction."
Skye shot Coulson the biggest glare.
"That way," Coulson finished. "May, Hunter, and Bobbi can get the agent out as soon as possible. Ok? Go get ready!"
Everyone left except for Skye.
"Are you kidding me?!" She yelled. "Me and Ward?! You just had to pair us up, didn't you!"
"Skye, I'm sorry. But like it or not, you guys are great partners and are basically unstoppable!"
"Oh yeah? And where will you be in all this?!" Skye asked.
"I have some other business I need to attend to."
"Like what?!"
"That!" Coulson scolded. "Is none of your business!"
"And what about me and May?! She won't even look at me Coulson!" Skye yelled.
"Well you did choose Ward over her."
"BECAUSE IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!" Skye yelled.
Then she sighed. "I need you to tell her that she almost killed me and that really hurt."
Then Skye stormed out of the room. She rounded the corner and bumped into May. She glared at her before walking into Coulson's office. Skye sighed and shook herself before going to get ready for the mission.
❃
"Ok, the plane's all set," Ward told Skye as she got in.
"Why wouldn't it be?" She snapped.
Ward stared at her, taken back.
She sat down in the back of the plane, not making eye contact with him. He looked at her sadly before walking up to the front of the plane and started it up. Skye sighed and looked at her laptop.
❃
"Here goes nothing," Ward said as Skye and him stood outside of the Hydra base.
Skye finished hacking into their systems and they slid in through the door. They ran down the hallway and slid up against the corner.
"Ok," Ward said. "I think we should use bombs for the distraction. I packed some in the bag-"
"No Ward," Skye interrupted. "Bombs are a terrible idea! They take forever to set up, we could get caught in the blow, and some of our teammates nearby could get hit by it! I have a better idea."
"Oh? And what's that?!" Ward asked flatly.
Skye raised her hands up and shook them in the air. Ward looked at her.
"No. No!" Ward scolded. "Your powers will draw them all straight to you."
"Isn't that what we want?!" Skye asked. "At least I can control mine. Unlike your unpredictable bombs," she muttered.
"You know what Skye just give me the bag!" Ward yelled.
He pulled it away from her.
"Hey give it back!" Skye yelled and pulled it towards her.
Ward pulled it back towards him and Skye did the opposite. It soon turned into a tug-a-war match.
BAM! SWOOSH!
Those were the sounds of a gunshot and Skye's lightning quick reaction to it. Skye had shot the bullet back with her seismic waves. She looked at the Hydra agent that had almost shot them. Then she looked at Ward.
"Come on!" She yelled and they both ran around the corner.
Then Skye whipped back around and shot the Hydra agent backwards with her waves. He fell back, knocked out. Then she started running down the hall.
"Come on!" Skye yelled and kept running. "We've got to make that distraction!"
She slid up against the next corner with Ward right behind her. She looked around to see ten Hydra agents standing there. Her and Ward quickly knocked them out. Then Skye turned to Ward.
"I think this is a good spot right?" She asked.
"For what?"
"What do you think?!" Skye snapped. "The distraction!"
"Do I get a say in this, at all?" Ward asked.
Skye rolled her eyes and thought for a second. "No, not really. Considering I am a higher level than you and plus, my plan is just a whole lot better."
Ward glared at her before bending down to lay on the floor. She sighed and tried to relax. She slowly put out her hands and closed her eyes. Then, after a second she sent out a wave. It wasn't so powerful to knock down walls, but it was powerful enough to send people flying back. Ward had to admit he was impressed. He slowly got up off the floor as soon as Skye ended her wave.
"That was, pretty amazing," Ward said and smiled at her.
Before Skye could respond, 15 agents came running at them.
"Come on," Skye said, as her and Ward ran into the battlefield.
❃
"Skye!" Bobbi called into the comp. "Ward! We got the agent! Do you copy?"
"Yep!" Skye called in. "We'll meet you at the jets!"
❃
"That, was a really great mission," Coulson told them. "Good job everyone. The agent is settling in her room. But don't get used to having her here, she just told me she's retiring."
Everyone nodded and left. Everyone except for Skye.
"I don't know if you've noticed sir, but I don't have an S.O."
"What do you mean?" Coulson asked.
"I asked May if we were gonna get back to training," Skye explained. "And I guess this gave me her answer."
Skye lifted up her shirt to show a bruise across her stomach.
"She did that?!" Coulson exclaimed.
"Yep," Skye replied. "She decked me right in the gut. I was totally unprepared. I should've known....."
Skye's voice drifted off as tears filled her eyes.
"Hey, come here," Coulson said and hugged Skye.
"I just miss her," Skye cried. "I miss having her as a role model to look up to. But now she's mad at me for choosing Ward over her and attacking her. And she won't even talk to me."
"Hey," Coulson soothed and gently stroked Skye's head. "It's gonna be alright. How about you ask Ward to be your S.O? Just like old times huh?"
Skye broke off their hug and looked at him.
"You're kidding right?"
"Not exactly," Coulson replied. "Maybe it'll help you two heal. Then maybe eventually you guys can get back together and get married. And then maybe you guys can have kids and be a happy little family without anymore interruptions-"
"Coulson," Skye said. "You're not just saying this because you ship us?"
Coulson shook his head. "I think it'll be good for you."
Skye sighed. "Alright. I'll give it a shot. Oh, and Coulson?"
"Yes?"
"Back when we were fighting all the robot Wards, you called me your daughter. Why?" Skye asked.
"Sorry," Coulson said. "It just slipped out."
Skye smiled. "Well thanks."
Coulson smiled back.
