1 | Pompous Lives

I walk down the stairs in front of my house and my heels make small clacks as they hit the marble floor. A few steps away from the stairs stands a polished black car that I go to my work on every day. The door of the car opens, and a stout, middle-aged chubby man wearing a black suit and a hat comes out. As he looks at me approaching him, he gives me a nod, taking off his hat and bowing at me. I just nod at him in response and sit on the passenger seat of the car when the driver opens the door for me.

As the man opens the door to the driver's seat, he fixes his hat on top of his head and places a hand on the steering wheel in front of him, turning to look at me at the same time.

"Where to, ma'am?" he asks, giving me a polite smile.

"To Aqua's office, please," I say as I take out my phone to make a phone call, quickly glancing back at the man. The driver nods and turns his eyes back to the road and starts the car. As I skim through the contacts in my phone, I patiently look for one particular person's number. After one last thumb's swipe, I finally find the contact. Irene Parker- one of my faithful employees. I press the green button across her name, giving her a call.

"Hi, Ms. Kayla. Will you be here anytime soon?" Irene asks from the other end.

"I'm afraid I'll be a little late. Can you handle everything for me?"

"How long?"

"About an hour. Make sure no one is slacking off and take care of sending the products to the retailers until I'm back."

"Understood. You don't have to worry, Ms. Kayla. I'll manage everything."

With a cold "Yes," I hang up and check my watch. It is already a quarter past nine. Considering the office opens at eight every morning, I'm pretty late. Sighing, I put my phone inside my purse, and after some slow minutes of worry and anxiousness, the car finally stops before our company.

Stepping out of the car, my heels meet the ground and I take in the sight before me. Many buildings are spread across a thinly wired black fence. In the middle of all the buildings stood one exceptionally tall building, with big letters printed on it: Aqua.

Aqua is a world famous fashion company that I worked hard to put out there. It offers unlimited access to clothes, makeup, wigs, and everything you can imagine in the field of fashion. Our company ranks number one in the whole world.

Have you ever wondered what your life would be if you never chose a certain path? There is such a wide range of paths you could have chosen, and what's bizarre, is that you take one wrong step and you're unhappy for almost all your life. Take me, for example. I love writing and editing. I admire art. I didn't think my parents would be so ignorant to push me into the path they wanted me to go in, while I couldn't even protest.

Hello, to those who care. My name is Kayla Livia Evanson. I'm a twenty-three-year-old woman who owns a world famous fashion company- Aqua. You should be assuming I'm plenty happy with my life, but I'm not. Sometimes, I feel like handing the company to my faithful employees, but I'm afraid my greedy-for-attention parents will make my life worse than Hell if I do.

Yes, my parents were the ones who forced me into the place where I am now. But really, I was hoping for a quiet life where I would happily create worlds, not clothing items. But alas, my family being ignorant and an outrageously orthodox one, I had to follow the rules so I won't damage our family's reputation.

When I was young and naive, I thought when I would get older, I would finally be able to act myself. But I was wrong. Till date, I had to wear a 'meh-not-so-interested-in-anything' attitude every single day. And it's getting tiring.

I walk in the company's premises, security guards greeting me with smiles on their faces. Without twitching a single muscle in my cheekbones, I nod at them, acknowledging their greetings to me.

Employees working there approach, me asking me company related questions. A few others were asking me to do paperwork and consults regarding the company's partnerships. It didn't even take me a flick of my finger to wave them off.

"Ms. Kayla, your presence is needed to be required at Miss Rosalie's company's anniversary. She says she would love it if you were there," one of the female employees says, handing me a gold-colored envelope with GIRLY GRUNGE- the company's name and logo printed on it and a bouquet of roses.

"You can have the bouquet. Thanks for letting me know, I'll make time." I nod at the woman as she beamed at me.

"Ms.Kayla, have you completed the paperwork Mr. Robby gave you two weeks ago for Aqua's partnership? Mr. Robby had called just this morning to see how things were going," a man plaid in a black suit said, holding some files and reports close to his chest.

"The paperwork should be done by tomorrow, let Robby know that I don't have all the time in the world. Two weeks isn't long." Throwing a pointed glance at the man, I keep walking. Through the corner of my eyes, I see the man stumble back on his feet and bowing before leaving as well.

As I walk through the polished, white halls of the building, I reach my cabin at the farthest end of the hall- the second place where I can partially be myself. Thank God knocks exist, so I can quickly compose myself and ask the person to come in. I sit on the comfy seat before my desk and proceed to open my work's laptop which was kept before me, but am interrupted when a knock sounds on my cabin's door. Speaking of knocks.

"Come in," I call and the door opens, revealing a brunette woman with her curly hair up in a loose bun on the top of her head, and the usual formal clothes women wear to their works. She held a few files and folders in her hand and had a welcoming smile on her face.

"Hello, Miss Kayla."

"Irene," I quickly say, without any greeting and nod at her, indicating her to proceed with what she has to say.

The woman places the files and folders she held on my desk and beamed at me. "First of all, welcome back. The morning went smooth as usual and no one that I know of slacked off on their work. Second," she paused, looking down and smiling brightly at the floor. "I'm getting married." She slaps her palm on her lips and shut her eyes, giggling all along. "I would love it if you could come to my wedding? I did all my work in advance." She pointed to the files and folders on my desk. "The invitation card to my wedding is also in there." she finished, the smile playing on her lips never leaving her face.

For the first time in a while, I couldn't resist smiling back. "Congratulations, Irene. Of course, I'll come to your wedding. Text me if there's anything else you need to tell me." Irene squeals and jumps on her way back after bowing at me before leaving the room.

As the door closes with a soft thud, my smile wears off and I look down on my palm, tracing the ring on my ring finger. People are actually happy in this world- getting married, having their dreams come true, working their dream job. And here I am, breaking up with the love of my life to focus on my work.

Sighing away the distracting thoughts, I keep the files and folders Irene left on my desk away inside the drawer and proceed to open my laptop. I open the browser and quickly type in 'wattpad.com' in the address bar and log in to my account. Seeing that I had 73 new notifications, I open the notifications page and take in the wonderful sight.

"I can't believe people have been reading my story," I say, almost on the verge of crying. All of the 73 notifications I had were for the book I was writing. People are voting, commenting, following me, adding it to funnily named reading lists. It is awesome.

"This is amazing! Please write more!"

"Omg update please"

"You have killer cliffhangers!"

Reading the sweet comments people took their time to write warms my heart and I couldn't be happier. After all, being a writer was my dream. A smile plays along my lips as I close the browser, getting back to work. "Let's finish Mr. Robby's paperwork and write a new chapter," I mumble, shutting the laptop and taking out the papers that were assigned to me.

Hours go by and soft shuffles of people walking can be heard. My head is slumped on my desk and my eyes are shut and burning. Two knocks sound on the door and I sit up, fixing my hair. I sit with my back straight, and elbows on my table, and call, "Come in." My sounds raspy and tired, but I didn't bother to hide it.

The door clicks open, and a mildly aged woman with blonde ringlets hanging from her scalp comes into my sight. "Miss, everyone has started to go home. Will you be going home soon? It's almost closing time."

I nod at the woman. "I will go once I finish wrapping up." Giving me a small smile, the woman closes the door and goes back to what she was up to. I open the drawer to the desk and take out the paperwork that I had finished an hour ago. I have to make time for Irene's wedding, o to Girly Grunge's meeting, and prepare for the sale day, too. Oh, I have to write a new chapter on Wattpad by Saturday as well.

December is always such a busy month, it's so easy to lose breath and do a bad job at catching up. If only I liked what I was doing. Sighing, I relax in my chair and pick up the telephone receiver to make a call. After two rings, it picks up.

"If it isn't the wonderful Aqua's head! How do you do, Miss Kayla?" I can already hear the pretentiousness in Mr. Robby's voice.

"I'm doing fabulous, Mr. Robby. I've finished the paperwork, by the way. Should I have it sent back to you tomorrow morning?" Trying to keep my voice sweet and charming, I dig my long nails in my palms so tightly, that it hurts.

"Oh, of course, send it before 9 AM, if possible. Meetings take a lot of time." Mr. Robby laughs over the phone.

"Understood. Excuse me, but I have to go. It's almost closing time. Talk to you another time." I hang up before Mr. Robby can say anything. The old haggard. How does he even own a company? Shouldn't he be paying his bills at the hospital?

I close the drawer after putting the paperwork back in, sneering at the pompous conversation I just had with Mr. Haggard. I stand up and immediately fall back down, as I feel a stinging pain shooting up from my ankle. "I hate heels." Taking a deep breath, I stand up again and walk out of my cabin with my coat and purse with my phone in my hand. My fingers proceed to type my driver's number and I wait for him to pick up.

"Miss Kayla! Should I come pick you up?" The driver sounds livelier and fresher than usual. I wonder if something happened?

"Yes, please. I'm at Aqua's office."

"I'm just outside the premises, ma'am."

"I'll come out in a minute." I hang up the phone and walk out of the office and into the cold outside. Just like the driver said, my sleek, black, polished car was standing right outside the premises. I quickly get in, as gracefully as possible to hide from the cold. My teeth almost started chattering.

"It's cold, huh." the driver says, a cigarette in his hand.

"Very." I smile, covering my mouth and coughing a bit. As soon as I do, the driver discards the cigarette outside the window and apologizes after which we drive back to home. On the ride, being slightly bored, I open the Wattpad app on my phone, noticing I had more notifications and sweet private messages. One of them, in particular, catches my eye. The account's name is 'Wattpad's Next Published Author' and they have a huge fanbase with contests and other fun books. It seems legit. What would these guys have to say to me? With curious, shaky, and sweaty fingers, I open the message.

Hello, Rory! We've read your book, Millionth Sorry, and we think it's an amazing book and you're doing an awesome job writing it. As you may have already noticed, we help Wattpaders get published and out there, and we'd love to have your book out there as well as we think it'll do good. If you let us help you out, we'd be pleased. Thanks for your time! We hope you consider our offer.

In the back of my mind, I knew that I would accept this offer, but as a personality, I don't think this will fit my description. The owner of a world famous fashion company, turns out to be a cheesy romance writer? I can already imagine the embarrassing news headlines. But then again, being a published author has been my dream for forever, and I've had plenty of chances to become one, but I have never. I've already met my parents' expectations, and I'm older now. How long will I walk in the path they showed me?

~

I'm finally uploading the first chapter ahhh I'm so excited! How do you like it so far? Do you think Kayla will take the 'second chance'? ;D This is just the first draft and I'm still planning a lot of it, so if you have any suggestions to make this better, let me know. :) I'm so excited to hear what you guys think of this, though!

I'll be back with a second chapter soon. Till then, toodles! cx
