Chapter 50
Blinking his light brown eyes open, Tiberius found himself in a soft bed inside Pops' apartment. He could hear the elderly basset hound talking with Gidget. Sitting up, the old hawk hissed in pain. Glancing down at his side, he saw that there were bandages wrapped around his midriff. He could feel more around his forehead and neck. Observing his surroundings, the hawk noticed something.
The kittens were nowhere to be seen.
Scrambling to his feet, Tiberius bit back a screech of pain. Every part of his body was screaming at him to rest. But his heart ached for the kittens he had raised for the past week. He needed to know if they were okay. The old hawk knew he couldn't live with himself if even one didn't make it.
"All he needs to do is rest and he'll be fine," Pops informed Gidget. A split second after he said those words, Tiberius passed by them. His eyes widening in shock, the elderly dog barked, "Eagle Eye, are you kidding me right now?! I should've duct taped you to the floor!"
"Tiberius, get your tail feathers back in bed!" Gidget ordered. The fluffy white Pomeranian raced after her friend. Pulling up ahead of him, she stood in his way. Giving her the puppy dog eyes, Tiberius whimpered, "Please, I need to see the kittens! I need to know if they're okay!"
"They're alright, they're with me," Chloe's voice called around the corner. Surprised that she was here, Tiberius avoided Gidget's blockade and entered the kitchen. There he found Chloe laying in a bed basket. Curled up at her stomach were the three girl kittens. Panic filled up inside the old hawk when he realized that the only boy was nowhere to be seen. Before he could have a heart attack though, Chloe revealed a small orange bundle of fur cradled in her forepaws. "It's okay," the tabby whispered, "They're sleeping."
"Diego oh my god!" Tiberius rasped. Limping over to the basket, he gently nuzzled the orange kitten as he mumbled, "Thank goodness you're okay." Smiling softly, Chloe remarked, "Had a bit of trouble feeding him at first but he should be okay. He and his sisters." His eyes brimming with tears of joy, Tiberius hugged Chloe as he murmured, "Thank you so much."
"You're... you're welcome," Chloe meowed, startled at first. But she eventually relaxed and leaned into the embrace. After a while, the two broke off from the hug. "So... the boy is Diego. What did you name the girls?" the gray tabby cat asked, gesturing to the three sisters with her striped tail. Pointing to each one with his wing, Tiberius answered, "The bluish gray one here is the oldest Azul. Blanca is the white one and Coral is the orange kitten with white stripes. Diego is their little brother."
"They're all very beautiful," Chloe commented, leaning down and giving Diego's head a lick. Gazing down at all four kittens lovingly, Tiberius rasped, "Yeah, beautiful." At that moment, Azul woke up, revealing that her blue eyes were now open. Heart melting, the old hawk nuzzled her. A smile on her face, Chloe shifted a bit in the basket to give Tiberius room. Hesitating at first, the old hawk laid down beside her. Yawning sleepily, the tabby cat rested her head against his shoulder. Together, they quietly watched the napping kittens before they too fell asleep.
"Aw, that's so cute," Gidget murmured, her fluffy tail wagging. His eyes narrowing, Pops turned to Myron and muttered, "Keep an eye on them." Glaring at the elderly basset hound, Gidget growled, "Pops, seriously?! Leave them alone, they need sleep!"
"I'm watching them..." Pops muttered, slowly backing away.
