Chapter Nine

(Alexis' POV)

"Ah, David, you're here. Good. I was beginning to think you got lost on your way up here. I know it's dark out, but still," Alpha Kent chuckles as we enter his office.

I glare daggers at the back of Dad's head as he walks towards where his best friend is seated.

"Sorry, Kent. Alexis wasn't too keen on coming," Dad replies.

"I understand."

I snort at his comment. He thinks he understands. I don't think anyone could understand what I'm going through.

"Now, now, Alexis. I know that you're upset, but let's not forget who the Alpha is here."

I open my mouth to make a snide remark but Dad's warning growl cuts me off.

Alpha Kent motions towards one of the two seats in front of his desk. "Please, sit down. We have much to discuss."

"I'm fine standing," I retort.

"Alexis," Dad growls.

I throw him a glare before moving to sit in the unoccupied seat. Alpha Kent smiles sadly at me across the desk.

"I was hoping Coby would have joined us, but I'm afraid he was forced to take some wolves and head out. Alpha Gareth seems to be having some problems with a group of rogues and has called for backup from our pack. He should be back soon though."

It was typical of our neighboring pack to cry for help once a rogue is sighted on their land. Their wolves aren't capable of taking down a group of rogues as they aren't as skilled as ours. Our pack has had to come to their rescue one time too many. It's about time they grew a pair.

"Anyway," Alpha Kent continued. "I'm sure you have many questions, Alexis and I know for certain that Coby's absence won't hold us back."

He smiles at me as he waits for my first question.

I bite back a growl. I don't understand how he can be so calm about this. How the hell could he let a male wolf mate with another wolf who wasn't his mate, especially when her mate was there all along?

"Who was my mother's real mate?"

Alpha Kent doesn't look the least bit surprised at me question. In fact, it's almost as if he knew I was going to ask that first. However, he doesn't respond straight away. Just as I'm about to ask him again, does he finally answer.

"Me."

"I'm sorry, what?"

"Your mother, Elizabeth Walker, was my true mate," he replies, sadness evident in his voice.

I watch him carefully as he expertly controls his emotions. This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

"What? That's not possible."

My mind is reeling from this new information. My mom, was the Alpha's true mate?

"I know it's a lot to take in, Alexis, bu-"

"A lot to take in? Finding out, that the woman that my Alpha is mated to is not his mate, would be a lot to take in," I say. "But, finding out that my parents weren't mates, that my mother's true mate is my Alpha and that both my parents and my Alpha lied to me my entire life, is an awful lot more than a lot to take in. It's enough to kill someone!"

I push my chair back as I stand up and begin pacing the room. I run a hand through my hair.

Dad sits silently and watches me, I feel his gaze on me but I completely ignore him. I can't deal with him right now. I can't deal with anyone right now.

I begin making my way towards the door, determined to get away from them; get away from everything.

"Alexis, where are you going?" Dad asks.

"Away from here. I need to think." Just as I'm about to open the door, Alpha Kent's words stop me.

"Alexis, I wouldn't leave yet if I were you. Not if you want to find out the real reason why you're here."

I spun around and faced him. "Are you telling me that there's more secrets being kept from me?"

He nods.

"This is ridiculous," I say.

"Sweetheart, come and sit down," Dad coaxes.

I snarl loudly at him.

How can he speak to me as if everything is normal? I suppose, he's done it for twenty-two years. What's another day to him, right?

I cross my arms and stand my ground, showing them both that I'm not moving.

"Okay," Alpha Kent sighs. "This may take a while. All I ask is that you remain quiet until I'm finished. Okay?"

I give a curt nod in reply.

"When I was fourteen, my mother, the Luna of this pack, was brutally murdered by a group of rogues. The same thing happened to my father's mother when she was Luna, and her mate's mother before her; three generations of Luna's, savagely killed by rogues. When I took my position as Alpha, I swore that when I met my mate, I would do everything in my power to protect her, even if that meant giving her up."

He pauses for a second, glances at Dad and then continues.

"When I met Beth, I couldn't have been happier. She was amazing, everything that I had ever wanted in a mate and much, much more. However, I knew that we couldn't be together just yet. The descendants of the rogues that killed my mother were waiting, waiting for me to find my mate, take her as my Luna so that they could kill her. I couldn't risk that.

So, David offered to pretend that she was his mate until the rogues were killed. It seemed like the perfect solution to all our problems. However, as one year turned into five, and five turned into ten, I knew that my mate was extremely unhappy. She wanted a pup and I needed an heir.

Even though I knew it would almost kill me, I agreed to allow David to give her the pup she so longed for. Hoping that it would help, Michelle, my 'mate', as far as everyone else was concerned, fell pregnant as well.

All throughout both Beth and Michelle's pregnancy, we watched their every move. We made sure that no harm would come to either them or their pups during those nine months.

For the next few years, the rogues seemed to have disappeared. No rogue was ever found on our land or on our neighboring pack's land either. We couldn't be happier, yet both David and myself had a sickening feeling in our stomachs.

Then, that horrible day came, when my life came crashing down around me. The day your mother was killed was the most horrifying day of my life. It turned out that they knew. The rogues knew all along who my true mate was. How? I don't know. The only people who knew the truth were myself, David, Beth and Michelle. No one else knew, yet the rogues did. They always knew." He clears his throat and I give him a small smile.

"What worried me then, was that someone else was in danger," he continued. "I prayed that I was the only one that held the vital piece of information; I was sure I was. To this day only two people know the truth and know who that one person is."

I stare at him in utter confusion. "What are you talking about?" He's talking in riddles!

"When a new Alpha is born, the current Alpha gets a mark, sort of like a tattoo, on his body. This is so he knows that his pup has the Alpha gene. When I stood by and allowed my true mate bear another wolf's pup, I felt a change happen inside me. I remember feeling nothing but white blinding pain, but assumed that it was just the pain of knowing my mate was with another man."

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Dad shift uncomfortably in his seat but I ignore him, too focused on listening to what Alpha Kent has to say.

"It wasn't until three months after Coby's birth that I knew what that pain meant." He pauses again. I still don't understand the significance of what he's saying.

"A mark never appeared when he was born."

I gasp. Finally I understand. "W-what are you saying?"

Alpha Kent rolls up his left sleeve. My eyes latch in on the black writing on the inside of his forearm.

06-02-1991

A date of birth; my date of birth. And underneath the letter 'A'.

"A for Alexis," I whisper.

"A for Alpha," Alpha Kent finishes.
