Aiden

As the dashboard clock glowed 6:17 AM, Aiden brought the Hummer to a gentle stop in front of Delilah's apartment building, turning off the engine and allowing the city's distant hum to fill the sudden silence.

"Home sweet home," he murmured, more to himself than to her.

She managed a weak smile, the corners of her mouth barely lifting. "Thanks for... everything, Aiden. And thanks to Draven for playing chauffeur to my coat and ID. I'm pleased he delivered them to the campground this morning."

Aiden chuckled, the memory of Draven's disgusted expression surfacing as he recalled the garment. Her coat still smelled of alcohol and desperation.

"Consider it a VIP service," the vampire had said. "Alibi secured; the weekend's officially accounted for."

A plan had come together to protect Delilah, and Aiden felt the knot of worry in his stomach loosen. The Embassy would be coming, and he wasn't going to allow them to get their hands on her. He wanted to keep her with him, tucked away in his remote cabin, a place where their world felt quiet. But that stubborn glint in her eye made it clear that arguing was a lost cause.

He could still taste the remnants of their kisses on his lips, a yearning pull to stay connected.

She had a job, a life, and her ferret waiting.

Aiden walked alongside Delilah, their hands intertwined, as they made their way to her door. The warm, stale air lingered in the hallway while he cupped her face, his thumbs following the gentle curve of her cheekbones. Love and longing filled his gaze. He intensified their kiss, a frantic, clutching embrace that conveyed underlying concerns and strong protectiveness. He enjoyed her sweetness, wanting to take in every bit of her.

Delilah's breath tickled his skin, sending shivers down his spine.

"Stay with me," he murmured, his voice a low, persuasive hum against her ear. "Let me handle your dragon of a boss. One call. A strategic cough. You're magically ill for the day."

He punctuated the suggestion with a playful wiggle of his eyebrows.

Delilah recoiled, a grimace twisting her features. "Rita? Call in sick? That's just waving a red flag in front of a bull."

She rubbed her temples, anticipating the migraine She Devil's wrath would surely induce.

Aiden's eyes sparkled with a playful glint. "Perhaps I could... speak with her. Encourage Rita to see it my way."

Delilah gasped, shoving him. "Aiden, no! That's just asking for trouble! The bull will never stay off my case!"

She opened the door with a subtle shrug of her shoulders, ignoring the situation. She bent down and picked up the long, slinky creature, her movements flowing despite the obvious fatigue in her eyes. Brown and white fur blended as the ferret, now in her arms, fixed Aiden with beady black eyes.

A primal urge, a buried instinct, clawed at his throat. He tasted the phantom fur on his tongue, the wildness rising.

"Go, Wolfie," Delilah urged, her voice soft but firm. "Lowell's still out there, and the Embassy's lurking."

She tilted her head, a silent plea. Aiden bent, aiming for her lips, but a furious squirm erupted in her arms. From deep within him, a guttural rumble vibrated, a sound older than language.

The ferret went rigid, its tiny body still, and its peircing gaze blinked once more.

"Seriously, boys?" Delilah huffed, her voice laced with a weary hope. "I envisioned backyard barbeques, father-son bonding over playtime, maybe even... cooperation." She sighed, the sound deflating like a punctured tire. "Aryton's stuck with you no matter what. You're his father now."

Aiden's chuckle was dry, humorless. He took a deliberate step backward, his hand finding the cool metal of the doorframe.

"Growth is a process, Foxy," he said. "Sometimes even I take a while to warm up. Some animals are just slow to... domesticate."

He flashed a grin, all sharp angles and barely concealed teeth. The door opened with a whisper, and he stepped out after giving her a gentle kiss on the cheek.

Aiden leaned against the cool oak of her door, the echo of Delilah's laughter still dancing in his ears. A smile tugged at his lips, a foreign and exhilarating sensation. He'd always constructed walls, brick by painstaking brick, around his true self, a fortress built to keep the world at bay. Now, those walls felt paper-thin, almost nonexistent when Delilah was near.

With other women, interactions were mere performances, each word a carefully chosen line. But with her, he was just... Aiden, raw and unguarded.

A warmth bloomed in his chest, chasing away the shadows that had lingered for so long. Even with all the chaos going on around him, he felt a lightness inside that he had not felt in years. Aiden realized then that Delilah was the ideal one for him.

The Hummer's door slammed shut, the sound swallowed by the vehicle's sheer size. He slumped into the driver's seat, the familiar fragrance of old leather and lingering pine providing some consolation.

Aiden closed his eyes, a muscle ticking in his jaw. Merrick was already facing the music─a symphony of bureaucratic questions and veiled accusations from the Embassy, all because some blabbermouth spotted a wolf and a vamp strutting around Colorado like some juvenile delinquents.

His pack needed time, enough time to grab Lowell before the higher-ups decided they were the problem. The thought of turning on one of their own left a bitter taste in his mouth. He clenched his jaw, the pressure a physical manifestation of his internal turmoil.

The pack's commitment and allegiance were on the verge of being challenged.

The hesitant dawn painted the asphalt gold as Aiden navigated the truck, the first reluctant beams of sun creeping over the rooftops. Meeting a vampire at this hour felt like a glitch in the matrix, a broken rule in a world of shadows.

Draven's urgent text echoed in his mind: Before seven o'clock is the safest time to see me.

He switched off the engine just a block away from the address, which was a typical house on a street adorned with well-kept landscapes. His paranoia intensified as he peered into his rearview mirror. Had the Embassy noticed their movements? Were they all under surveillance?

Hopefully not. The vampire-werewolf investigation was just beginning.

Aiden slipped from the truck, the morning air cool against his skin. He crossed the frozen lawn toward the porch, his boots crunching on the ice. Reaching the front door, he rapped, a staccato rhythm against the wood.

The door swung inward before the sound disappeared. An inky darkness yawned before him, but the threshold stood empty.

An unsettling silence hung in the air.

"Why are you standing there gawking like a tourist?" Draven's voice, a low rumble, echoed from behind the ornate wooden door. "You're already familiar with the procedure. Feel free to come in; there's no need for a formal invitation."

Aiden paused before nudging the door. It swung open and shut with a gentle click, making the silence feel even more pronounced. Draven stood in the hallway. The dim lighting cast long shadows across his face, etching lines of fatigue around his eyes. His typically polished outfit was a mess.

"Rough morning?" Aiden inquired as he stepped further into the foyer.

Draven let out a sigh and pointed to the living room. "Rough doesn't even begin to cover it, King. I've had a visitor. One I wasn't expecting." He paused, his gaze distant. "The Embassy... they sent someone to Eden Cemetery of all places!" His voice rose slightly, laced with frustration. "A subtle messenger, but the message was clear: we're being watched, Aiden. Every move, every breath. We can't even fart without them knowing about it! Damn, I thought we had them fooled!"

Aiden sank into the plush cushions, the rich scent of coffee filling his nostrils. Two delicate porcelain cups steamed on the mahogany tray.

He sighed, lifting one.

"Who exactly is watching us?" Aiden asked, the cup pausing halfway to his lips. "You said you'd take care of everything. What happened?"

Draven's polished shoes clicked a frantic rhythm against the marble floor. Back and forth, back and forth, he paced, a trapped predator in a gilded cage.

Aiden lowered his cup, studying the vampire. Draven's usual composed demeanor had crumbled; a slight tremor betrayed the raw anxiety beneath.

"Some of the elders... they're resistant," he said, halting his pacing with a helpless shrug. "They can't trust me."

Aiden raised a brow. "Have you given them any reason not to?"

The vampire stopped in his tracks, the sound fading away in the impressive space around him. He turned, his gaze a physical touch, piercing Aiden with unnerving intensity. The air grew heavy, pregnant with unspoken truths.

"Aiden," Draven's voice, smooth as silk, raised goosebumps on his neck. "You've heard the whispers, the discontent brewing among our colleagues. Unsettling, isn't it?" His eyes flashed weakness, immediately disguised by resolution. He stepped closer, a scent of wealth and something wild washing over him. "Truth streamlines things," the vampire murmured, a fleeting smile playing on his lips. "But know this, my friend: my loyalty lies with my comfort, my business, and my lifestyle."

The words lingered in the air, causing Aiden to shiver. Draven's smile widened, revealing something predatory.

"So, basically, you've given the Embassy and the elders every reason to distrust you," Aiden remarked, his gaze lowering to the floor. "Any word on Cynthia?"

The vampire ran a hand through his dark hair, a gesture thick with frustration. "Barely a whisper. She's a ghost in our midst. No one really knows where she slipped away to. Everyone assumed her to be fresh blood, but... that's bull." He moved closer, a gleam of malice in his eyes. "Do you recall my neighbor, Mrs. Gable, the one who enjoys knitting and often voices her grievances about dogs barking at all hours?" Aiden's jaw clenched; a single nod was his response. "Add ninety decades, plus five more, and then maybe we're talking. Cynthia's older, wiser, and more cunning. She's been on the hunt for decades."

Both clans found themselves in a terrifying situation now.

Aiden rubbed a hand over his face, the phantom weight of worry pressing down. "Why Lowell? What the hell does she want with him?"

Draven's lips curled into a sardonic smirk. "Besides using him as a sexual playground?"

Aiden's gaze hardened. "This isn't about pleasure, Draven. We found him huddled in that mountain cave. Before she vanished to California, he mumbled about serums she'd given him. Do you remember reading Merrick's report?"

Draven's smirk vanished, replaced by a flicker of something unreadable. "About that... He and I are on a break. There's minimal communication between us until we have your pack member and my vampire fugitive under our control. Merrick and I can't bear the burden of being involved in this as a couple."

Aiden almost spilled his cup of coffee on the table in confusion. "You prioritize a werewolf's needs before your own?"

He couldn't help the incredulous lift of his eyebrow, a silent challenge to the centuries-old creature across from him.

Draven's lips curved in a fleeting, almost embarrassed, smirk as he swirled his cup of coffee. "I know it sounds absurd, coming from me. But... you, of all people, understand me, Aiden. Meeting your second-in-command was a profound experience. Each passing day, our connection deepens. So, yes," he admitted, his voice a low hum, "Merrick's happiness, his well-being, is paramount to my own. That's the challenging reality of love, isn't it? It reorders your priorities and reshapes your world."

Aiden coughed and coffee splattered all over the shiny mahogany table. His eyes were wide with amazement as he focused on Draven. "Out of all the interactions, all the years we've... I've never seen you act so..." He paused, seeking for the appropriate term before deciding on one. "Human. You actually seem... human."

Draven's lips curled into a sort of half-smile, hinting at a flicker of something that seemed almost... amused? "King," he said, his voice maintaining the polished elegance of a seasoned negotiator. "Appearances can be deceiving. Everyone has their secrets; some run deeper than you might suspect." He intertwined his fingers with a contemplative air. "Concerning Cynthia, my promise stands. I'll continue to monitor her whereabouts closely."

Aiden leaned back, the couch creaking beneath him. "A serum... pushing a werewolf over the edge? It's unheard of."

The vampire's brow furrowed, the smooth skin between Draven's eyes creased with concern. "Perhaps the compound weakened Lowell's natural defenses. Maybe he teetered on the precipice, and the last batch... pushed him."

That could very well be happening. He clung to that belief, but the crimson hue in his young pack member's eyes and Lowell's erratic behavior told a different story. Aiden had never seen a werewolf lose control, a condition mentioned solely in local legends. These tales, shared with wolves, acted as a continual reminder to control their animal inclinations.

A glance at his watch reminded him that time was running out. He needed to meet Merrick at work to greet the representative from the Embassy.

Aiden placed the cup back on the table and stood. "Thanks for your help, Draven."

He realized that the vampire had sacrificed a lot to give him this knowledge and shown him a degree of friendship he hadn't imagined. These were now shadow alliances, a concept that fascinated him.

Draven stated, "The vampires will remain hidden for a while. But I'll text you if any new information comes my way."

Aiden felt the weight of the vampire's words, a cold blanket settling over him. He swallowed, forcing a small nod.

"Understood," he said, already grabbing the door. "I'll see myself out."

Back outside, his fingers tightened around the Hummer's door handle, the cold metal a stark contrast to the simmering unease in his gut. Cynthia.

The name alone was enough. But it was more than just her identity swirling in the rumor mill. Draven, the stoic bastard, felt it too─the tremor in the vampire undercurrent, the low growl before the storm.

This was no longer a trivial matter for every faction. Was this a full-blown supernatural war? Uncontainable. And the inevitable collateral damage?

Humans, caught in the crossfire. Not to mention that the Embassy's vultures would descend, eager to transform a violent dispute into a power play.

Aiden climbed into the driver's seat, the leather cracking in protest, and knew there was trouble building, much worse than he had anticipated. Time to get his hands dirty.
