Part 15/Three Bullets

"Well..." Dominic stretched for a moment, then strolled back over to the bed. "I think that's about it." He sat down again and checked his wristwatch, mouthing something to himself as he did so. "We should - - "

"Wait," Maya interrupted suddenly, "what about the cops Gregor had been paying to work for him? What happened with them?"

"Hm?" He looked up at her quizzically. "Oh, yeah, that..." he sighed, getting up and walking over the window again. "That was our next mission. It also ended up being Tony's first mission with us as an official member of the team."

"What...did you just say?" Maya spoke slowly, barely able to get the words out.

"You know - - Tony? Daddy's little girl...the one he used for target practice?"

Maya looked at him in astonishment. "But...! You said she took three bullets to the chest, and then you just left her lying there! How could she survive something like that?"

"She had a bulletproof vest under her coat," Dominic replied, looking exasperated. "Do you really think I would send an untrained kid into a situation like that, ahead of myself, with no protection? I don't take other people's lives lightly, Maya.

"I needed to know whether or not Tony was in on the setup, so I sent her in there in order to gauge Gregor's reaction to her...but I made sure she had protection in case things went south."

"Why didn't you just tell me all that in the first place?! You made it sound like she risked her life for you, and then you turned your back on her as soon as you couldn't use her anymore."

"Because I needed to see where your head was at, Maya! You should know me well enough by now to know that I'm not that cold...and I need to know that you'll trust me, even when you don't understand what I'm doing or why I'm doing it."

"Trust you?! You spent our entire marriage, our entire relationship, lying about who you are - -"

"I never lied."

"- - and now you're mad because I don't trust you?"

"I never said that I was mad; I said - -"

"That I should know you well enough by now? Ha, you know what? I thought I did...but I don't. I don't know you at all. Not - - not anymore." She could feel the words catching in her throat again.

"Maya..."

"And another thing," she suddenly added, raising her voice again. "You don't assess me, or 'see where my head is,' or whatever you want to call it! I'm not one of your Goddarned targets - - I'm your wife...and we're supposed to be honest with each other. You don't get to play games with me."

"Well, you don't really know me that well, remember?" Dominic countered, easily turning Maya's words back on her. "So maybe we're not close enough just yet for that level of honesty."

Maya scoffed and folded her arms.

After a short period of silence, Dominic started to speak again, but was cut short by a sudden noise outside. Cursing under his breath, he quickly drew the gun that had been tucked into his belt, and cautiously approached the window, peering outside.

Oh, my God, Maya thought, crouching down on the floor. She grabbed the edge of the bed to steady herself, not wanting to lose balance and end up with a few dozen shards of glass and ceramic embedded in her skin.

After what seemed like a long time, Dominic finally relaxed. "Clear," he said quietly.

¡Gracias a Dios!

"Look," Dominic finally said, drawing in a deep breath as he tucked the handgun back into place, "we could keep arguing about this forever, and I'm sure you'd love to...but I'm not your biggest concern right now."

"Then...who is?" Heart still racing, she tried in vain to hide the fear in her voice. It was subtle, but still there.

"Whoever hid those weapons in our house," he shrugged.
