Chapter 16

"Where's Kayley??" D'artagnan asked as he and the other three male musketeers arrived back at the Garrison; Treville was training the cadets but stopped for a moment to talk to the four. "She needed to sort some business at the Palace" he informed, making the men raise a brow eat "hmm...what business??" Porthos wondered earning a shrug "I'm not sure" they could tell that was a lie. "Has Rochefort's body been dealt with??" the Captain asked earning nods "yup, the Palace guards have moved him and will bury him tonight, somewhere outside of Paris" D'artagnan reassured "and the maids were in the middle of cleaning up when we left". Treville gave them all a smile before stating that he would talk to them all properly in the morning as the female musketeer wasn't there and it was indeed getting late; he turned back to the cadets to dismiss them. Athos rested his arm on his boyfriends shoulder "it's been a long and hard day, shall we head over to the tavern gentlemen??" he asked earning a smirk from the bear like man "must you ask??". Laughing, they left the Garrison and made their way over towards the bar, desperate to have a good drink; today was a very stressful day. Once they had their drinks, the four musketeers began to wind down, but were still worried about Kayley "what do you think she's doing??" Aramis asked as he finished his second pint "probably something for the Queen, you know how close they are" D'artagnan had a good point before standing up to order some more drinks. With Kayley, she was still at the Palace but was about to leave; she and Derek had exited the Palace and were making their way over towards the stables. The stable boys were gone, probably done for the day. "Do you have to go so soon?? It's still light out" the Prince asked as the woman saddled up "you know I have to, the other's will become suspicious that I haven't returned to the Garrison or B&B, and I really don't want to be asked a hundred questions tonight" she stated. Turning around, Kayley found the twenty year old arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her close "...fine" he sighed "but you'll be back tomorrow??" she couldn't help but chuckle "I'm a musketeer for the French King and Queen, so yes, you'll see me tomorrow at some point". Their lips connected for a minute as Kayley wrapped her arms around the mans neck; they parted after a minute and she hopped up onto her horse, Sam. Waving as she left; Derek watched his now partner race off, turning around for a moment to return the gesture and blow him a kiss; the Prince pretended to catch it and place the kiss onto his heart. Both chuckling a their childish behaviour, Kayley galloped off and away from the Palace; Derek returned to the Palace and checked the royal couple. Louis was fast asleep so Anne suggested their go eat their dinner; they entered the dining room and sat as two servants served their food. The Queen asked if he and Kayley were okay, since she had told him of the musketeers horrific past "we're fine, great actually" he reassured earning a smile "really??" you could tell she wanted to know the details "we em...we kissed earlier". Anne's eyes widened, not expecting that!! "It was earlier when we were coming back from Rochefort's office, we had to hide in a small storage room and...it just happened!!" he explained everything to the woman, from their first kiss to when the musketeer had just left the Palace. Anne was smiling like the Chester cat as she hugged the young Prince "I'm so happy for you two!!" she exclaimed "it's about time too!!". Derek returned the smile as they finished eating before they said good night; it had been a long and rough day so they wanted to get some good sleep.

In town, Kayley had returned and had sorted Sam out in the stable at the Garrison; Treville greeted her and informed her of the whereabouts of the other musketeer. "The tavern?? Of course they are" she chuckled "I'm gonna go join them" the Captain nodded before stating that he was going to talk to her and the others in the morning. Reassuring that she wasn't going to get drunk....much, Kayley left the Garrison and made her way through the town before entering the building; people greeted her, most already drunk at it was eight at night. The teenager spotted her brothers sat in the corner, all on their fourth drinks, possibly fifth; chuckling, she made her way over through the crowd and sat down with them; they all smiled at the new presence. "Nice of you to join us kid" Athos stated with a smirk as he waved the barwoman for a new drink for the girl "sorry, I had some business to attend to" she informed before thanking the woman for handing her a drink, as well as Athos as he had paid for it. Of course, the men asked what business she had to deal with but she just waved it off, stating that it was nothing to be worried about before taking a swig of her drink, relaxing in her seat with a smile. Not entirely reassured, they decided to move onto a new topic; the girls horrific experience from a few hours before. "How are you kid??" Porthos asked earning a shrug "I'm fine....it wasn't something I wanted to relive but...I had to" she sighed "I guess I'm just thankful that he wasn't able to complete the attack and that Derek ran in when he did" they all were "...at least he's no longer alive" Aramis tried to also think on the positive side of things. Holding up his drink, Athos smiled "all for one" the others smirked as they copied his action "and one for all!!" they cheered before clashing their cups together. By the end of the night - eleven at night - the musketeers had had a decant amount to drink: Porthos - 10, Aramis - 9, Athos - 11, D'artagnan - 9 and Kayley - 6. Now, as usual, Kayley decided it was time for them to turn in; the others thankfully agreed and left the tavern, stumbling down the streets and entering the B&B. Constance chuckled as she was finishing the chores as the soldiers passed her and parted into their own rooms. In Kayley's room, she quickly changed into her night clothes, setting her uniform and weapons to rest on the chair in the corner. Lying down, the young woman began to think about the days events and victories; Rochefort was dead, the King and Queen were safe, the musketeers had done a good job and last but not least, she and Derek finally admitted and allwed their feeling to show!! She couldn't be more happy!!

The next morning, as usual, came way too soon; Kayley was back to being he first up and at the Garrison out of the musketeers. At 9 O clock, the cadets began to arrive and ate some breakfast; they all saw that the eighteen year old was already training, as well as cleaning up the stables, brushing the horses and washing the now used dishes. She was clearly in a good mood. At 10:30, the other's turned up and sat down with their breakfast, also noticing the young woman's extra positive attitude "hey kid!!" Porthos waved the teen over who happily jogged over "what's up??" Kayley asked as she stopped next to their table, Athos wrapped his arm around her, pulling her into a side hug "someone seems extra chirpy today" they smiles. The teenager shrugged "we have no reason not to be" was all she said as she returned the hug; suddenly a yell was heard "musketeers!! My Office!!". Standing up, they did as ordered and stepped up the stairs before entering the room, closing the door behind then. The five musketeers stood in front of their Captain who was leant against his desk "I wanted to congratulate you all on a job well done from yesterday, you all did good and it might have been one of the most important missions you've ever succeeded" they all agreed on that last statement "how are you Kayley??" Treville asked as he turned to the young woman who smiled "I'm fine". None of them were sure, earning a roll of the eyes "I'm fine!! Really!!" she insisted, her smile not leaving her lips; their all returned the kind gesture "okay, but we're here if you ever need to talk". The Captain then explained that the King and Queen wished to see them and that they would be leaving in ten minutes; they left the office and began to saddle up - the men thanked the teen for cleaning their horses. The musketeers galloped through the town before arriving at the Palace ten minutes later, handing their horses over to the stable boys before entering the grand building, wondering down the hallways until they reached the throne room. Inside, the Queen was stood waiting for them; they greeted one another before she explained how the King was and then thanked them for their bravery. "Now, I have a special message for you Treville from Louis" Anne stated with a smile "a proposition" she seemed....excited?? "France no longer has a Minister as we were going to ask Rochefort to take the place" the five musketeers smirked and shared a knowing gaze as their Captain began to realise what she was about to ask "Louis wants - no - he insists that you become the new Minister of France". Treville was completely taken back by the proposal "I...I..." Kayley rolled her eyes at her uncle "take it!!" she exclaimed, making them all laugh. The man chuckled before smiling at the Queen "I would be honoured your majesty" he bowed; they all clapped "grand!! Of course, you'll be the one to choose who will take your place as Captain". All eyes fell onto the man and Athos; they all know he was the perfect for the job. And it seemed Treville agreed "Athos" the man stepped forwards from the calling of his name "you are now the Captain of the Musketeers" the other's patted him on the back and shoulder. All of a sudden, the door opened revealing Derek; Kayley's smile widened as the Queen smirked. "Derek!!" Anne called "Treville's accepted to become the new Minister of France!!" she exclaimed earning a smile from the man as he made his way over "that's great!! France will be very happy to have you Treville" he stated. They all agreed. Suddenly, they watched as Derek wrapped an arm around Kayley's waist and said "hey"; the eighteen year old held her smile as she gazed up at him "hi". The other musketeers and now Minister stared with wide shocked eyes; were they seeing this right?? Someone was putting their hands on Kayley and wasn't getting beaten to a pulp?? Or at least threatened?! Treville and Anne smiled as the four male musketeers just gawked in shock...Constance was right; the big brother protective mode of kicking in. "Em....want to tell us something Kaylet??" D'artagnan asked as his boyfriend and Porthos crossed their arms "hmm....nope" she smirked, knowing she was winding them up; they weren't impressed.

Chuckling, Anne declares that they should go have lunch in the garden, to celebrate; they were unsure but decided to agree. They deserved a quick break, right?? Once in the garden, they all began to eat whilst talking, mainly about the future when Derek's parents appeared; Anne motioned for them to join them. "Have you told them about us??" Kayley asked as she whispered into her boyfriends ear, but the Prince shook his head "not yet, I haven't seen them since two days ago" he stated. The two sat at the table and asked how they all were before noticing how their sons arm was clearly resting on the eighteen year olds chair, pressing against her back; he was also rubbing her wounded shoulder gently. Seeing his parents smirks, Derek spoke up "mother, father" he glanced towards the youngest musketeer who did the same with a raised brow "Kayley and I are together" the confused look was replaced by a bright smile as the Prince gently moved his arm so that it was wrapped around her shoulders. Sarah and John both shared a look before smiling "that's brilliant Derek!! I'm so happy for you both!!" the woman exclaimed as they stood and walked around the table; the young couple did the same as the two women embraced, followed by John doing the same after his wife. "Em...what will the living arrangement's be??" Sarah asked with confusion; the two young adults glanced to one another. They hadn't thought about that; Derek and his parents lived on the other side of France!! Kayley couldn't leave Paris as she was a musketeer; she had to stay. "Hmm....if Anne and Louis will have me, I will stay here with them" Derek declared, shocking his girlfriend "em...Derek, could I have a word??" she asked earning a nod; they left the group and approached a bench. "What is it??" Derek asked as they sat down; the eighteen year old sighed as she did the same "are you...are you sure about this?? Moving here to Paris??". The man nodded, not understanding the concern his partner clearly had "why??...Do you not want me to stay??" he became worried but was reassured when Kayley smiled, cupping and caressing his cheek with her hand lovingly "of course I want you to stay, but....the look on your mother's face just....you've never lived away from your parents before and now you're going to be half way across the country!!" she exclaimed as she removed her hand "are you sure you're going to be okay??". Now he understood. Smiling, Derek grasped his girlfriends hands in his own "it'll be different, yes....and it might be difficult at first" he stated "but if I'm with you, then I know I will be fine....I just want to be with you Kayley" the musketeer smiled as her boyfriend leant in and placed a kiss onto her lips. "I love you" Derek mumbled as they parted, staring lovingly into the womans eyes "...and I love you" she returned the affection.
