"Hey, Ave!" when she heard that voice she lit up inside.
"Hey Brandon," she responded. Avery turned around to look at what she knew would make her day. She saw his hazel-colored hair bounce to the side as he jogged towards her. For a moment, she imagined that they were both alone. That Brandon was running across a field of sun-kissed tulips, looking at her intensely. That once he did reach her, he pulled her into a hug. Then he looked directly into her eyes as he slowly reeled her in toward his gorgeous and appetizing lips-
"I wanted to ask you something important," he interrupted. Everything was now back to normal, they were back at school, surrounded by a bunch of greasy and pimply teens. She gazed into his nervous eyes, and she knew something was going to happen. She then saw his tanned arm slowly come out from hiding behind his back. When she looked down, she realized that he had been holding a small folded piece of paper and an adorable teddy bear. Oh my god, she thought. Was what she had always dreamed about going to happen right here, right now? Her cheeks turned into a cherry red color. His firm hand started to rise to his chest.
"Here, read it," Brandon handed the small piece of notebook paper to Avery. Excitement raced through her body, and her hand shot up to snatch the note. She opened it up and her eyes stared down in hunger.
Every minute I spend with you feels like a moment in heaven. Every time I look into your beautiful eyes, all I see is you. You are everything I want and everything I need. I love you, it read.
I love you! I love you, I love you, I love you! This was easily that best day of her 17 years of life. Avery shot her eyes up to Brandon's beautiful face. She let them wander over tiny and barely noticeable freckles. She had always wanted to reach up toward him and kiss each one of those precious marks, and now she could.
Right when she was about to lift her arms and jump towards him, he said "Do you think she'll like it?"
Confused, Avery slowly choked out "what?"
"Do you think Jackie will like it?"
Avery looked back down at the note in her hand. She saw that her thumb was covering a word. She moved her thumb, and saw that it was trying to save her from the words that would haunt her for eternities. I love you Jackie. What once had made her the happiest she had ever been, now made Avery want to hide in a dark corner and weep.
"I know I'm not the best at love letters, but I have a feeling she'll like it," He told her. Every single one of his words was now torturing her. It felt like thousands of tiny little ants were biting at her. Biting and biting, until she couldn't feel anything at all.
"Yeah," Avery hissed in defeat, "Yeah, I think she'll love it,".
"Great! I'm going to give this to her right now! I can't wait to see her reaction!" he smiled enthusiastically.
Once Avery could hear him walking away, she let a lonely tear journey down her cheek.
"You know, you are seriously the best friend anyone could ever have," he yelled as he raced toward the luckiest girl in the world. Friend, she thought to herself as she too walked away.
