"Athena...!"
"I thought I informed you that I will only respond to 'Professor Booke'?" the woman said, glaring at her assistant.
"Y-Yes, you did--"
"Then why are you calling me Athena?"
"May I request that we don't do this? Many scientists are reporting strange readings coming from the... ah... anomaly in Sector C."
Athena Booke was a world renown scientist, best recognized for her work into the "Strange". Abilities. Powers. Gifts. Whatever you wanted to call them, Athena Booke would study them.
If a humanoid figure had an ability beyond a human's, it was Athena's job to figure out why. Living in Mermaid Run, Washington made this rather easy, as the city seemed to be a natural breeding ground for the Strange.
And her most recent case: the anomaly in Sector C. A golden box had been fished out of the ocean by a fishing boat, and her team had been called to investigate.
Athena currently stood on the beach at dusk. She had sent two of her researchers to examine the box more closely, and according to her measly assistant, they'd found something interesting.
"I'll check it out myself," Athena said, pushing past her assistant, whose eyes widened with terror.
"But Professor, it could be dangerous."
"I know," she said, "That's why I'm bringing the whole team with me. Including you."
Her assistant's face went pale. "Um--!"
"Did I ask you a question? Go get the rest of my team."
"Y-Yes Miss."
"Professor," she spat as the assistant scurried off.
Athena approached the box. It was hard to tell as the sun was just beginning to rise, but she could've sworn the box was glowing. A faint yellow shine seemed to reflect into her eyes, but when she looked closer, it was gone.
And then her whole team stood behind her.
Athena crouched down in front of the box. She slowly, oh so slowly, reached out to touch it.
"I don't think that's a good idea!"
"Hey, who's in charge here? Is it you? Or me?"
The moment her fingers connected--
Boom.
The box exploded, launching Athena and her entire team into different directions, sending sand and rock flying. Flames licked at anything remotely flammable.
Athena blinked, lying in a pile of loosened sand. She was conscious. And she didn't hurt nearly as much as she probably should've.
As a matter of fact, it occurred to her that she should probably be dead.
However, she climbed to her feet. She walked.
"Hello? Is anyone... okay?"
There was no response.
She was completely unharmed--save for a smoky ache in her lungs--but she would later learn that her entire team, including her assistant, had been killed instantly when the box exploded. But Athena had lived. Without a scratch.
Athena approached the place where the box had been. The box was long gone, blown to smithereens.
But there was something in its place.
A... set of armor?
She picked up the shimmering, golden-colored helmet. It looked vaguely familiar, like she'd seen it in a dream once or twice before. The helmet looked an awful lot like... a falcon's head, with a small "beak" over where her nose would be, and several "feathers" at the back of the head.
And Athena felt it calling to her. It had chosen her, and killed those deemed "not worthy". She should consider this a great honor, being picked out of trillions of possibilities from across millions of planets.
For a reason she couldn't explain, Athena put on the helmet. And the rest of the armor, too.
She wasn't Athena Booke anymore. She was the Golden Falcon. She'd gone from studying the Strange to being one of them in just a moment.
But what to do with such a great power?
She recalled that back at her lab was another Strange, who they'd brought in for questioning. A Strange who refused to answer to any name except for "Nightwave". Nightwave had insisted that she'd been born with the abilities of catlike reflexes and agility, and seeing in the dark.
The Golden Falcon knew what to do. The helmet continued to whisper to her, even as she wore it. It told her exactly what to do, but would she listen?
The Golden Falcon made a decision in that moment. A decision that if she hadn't made wouldn't let her down very different paths.
She made the decision to listen.
She knew there was others like her. Hell, she'd spent her entire career studying them. Trying to understand them. And now she did.
She would collect them.
And make a team.
The Voice in the Helmet only really spoke when it was necessary after that, so she didn't hear it all that often. But the last thing she remembered hearing that was day was a simple three words.
"The Aurora Wings."
