MiniZerk - Subtle Changes
POV: Josh
Warnings: None
-Begin One Shot-
The restaurant was beautiful and so was Freya. She was dressed in a simple short black dress, her hair and makeup all done up, smiling at me from across the candlelit table. While I sat there awkwardly in my nicest suit. I took care to make sure to clean up well for this date. I figured I could take Freya out somewhere special for once instead of somewhere like Nandos, for the thousandth time.
She and I carried small conversations that really didn't lead anywhere except to moments of silence. Which was fine with me but I could tell it would bother Freya based on the look annoyed look she would give me every once in a while.
We had just finished eating and were waiting for our deserts when I heard a laugh from across the room that really caught my attention. I knew the wonderful laugh anywhere. After having it ring in my ears for so many years, I could never miss it.
I turned slightly in my chair and looked across the restaurant to a small table on the side where a beautiful boy sat. His blonde hair was spiked up as normal but, even from here, you tell he put a little more effort into it than he usually did. I felt a smile cross my as I looked at Simon, my housemate and my best mate.
There was a wide smile on his face as he laughed at whatever the person in front of him said. Simon looked so handsome in the dark red button down shirt he wore.
"Who are you looking at Josh?"
I quickly turned back to Freya to see her quizzical look.
"Sorry," I replied quickly, "I thought I saw someone I knew across the restaurant, but I was wrong."
I watched as she turned to scan the restaurant. Thankfully her view of the boy was blocked by a wide pillar. I took the opportunity to turn and look again as I watched as Simon laughed again at his companion. A man I have never seen before, but he appeared to be an extremely handsome, well-built man.
I instantly felt a wave of jealously run threw me, scaring me. So I turned back to my dining companion just in time to meet her eyes as she had finished her scan of the room. When our eyes met she gave me a sweet smile that sent my stomach squirming and not in a good way. Noticing my distress, Freya questioned,
"Josh, what's wrong?"
"Nothing," I replied quickly, "Something from dinner must've hit my stomach wrong."
"Oh, ok." She replied sweetly, "Do you want to just get our deserts made to go then and go home?"
She asked this a little too hopefully which sent warning signals into my brain.
"Nah," I replied, waving her off, "We can eat them here, I should be fine."
"Ok, if you are sure Josh." She replied, her eyes glowing.
Oh fuck. I thought, realizing what was probably going through her brain, I hope she doesn't think I brought here hear to propose to her after desert like in some romantic movie.
I did a mental tally of everything, beautiful expensive restaurant, I was acting a little weirder than normal, and I was wanting to eat desert here. Shit
I immediately needed to get away for a second, just to clear my head. I stood up abruptly, scaring her.
"I have to go to the loo." I said quickly, not giving her a chance to reply before I tore off to the restroom.
Everything was such a blur that I didn't see the concerned gaze that followed me to the restroom nor did I see the blonde hair boy get up and follow me.
Entering the dimly lit bathroom, I immediately went to the sink. I quickly turned on the cold water and splashed it on my face. As I did this, I did not hear the door open and a voice call out to me.
After splashing water on my face for a minute, I stopped, turned off the water and just breathed. Why was I so freaked out at the thought of Freya thinking I was going to propose to her tonight? I mean, I was going to eventually but maybe in like two more years. Or never. I thought bitterly.
I felt the sharp intake of breath at the thought that crossed my brain. I didn't have a chance to process it before I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around as fast I could in shock and noticed that someone had come in the bathroom with me.
It was Simon. There was a concerned look on his face as he stood there with one of his hands out stretched. I could see the worry for me float threw his delightful blue eyes.
"Josh." He called softly in that smooth voice. "Are you ok?"
I realized I was standing there, probably looking frightened, breathing erratically. Basically, looking a scared dog who just dunked their face in the pool.
"Simon." I called back, my voice cracking.
"Josh." He called again, staring deep into my eyes.
I didn't say anything. I just stared back, the water dripping down my face from where I had splashed it.
Simon must have noticed this because he broke eye contact and turned to reach for one the baskets on the counter that had paper towels. I just watched as he gathered a few and made a move to hand them to me. I couldn't move though, so I just stared at him as he held out the towels. After a minute he let out a frustrated sigh. I then watched, my eyes going wide as he moved closer to me. He reached out with the towels and began wiping my face gently. I closed my eyes as he dried off my face, feeling the gentle strokes. After just a few moments he stopped and pulled back the towels. I heard them hit the trash but I still kept my eyes closed for a moment.
"Josh." He called out in a more annoyed tone. I opened my eyes to see him standing there, his arms crossed, looking annoyed. Even when he was annoyed he still looked cute.
Wait what.
"Josh!" he called out loudly, catching my full attention.
I shook my head and finally responded.
"Yeah, sorry. I was kind of, yeah." I replied quickly, not making any sense.
A look of concern crossed Simon's face again as he uncrossed his arms. He reached out and placed his hands on my shoulders and looked deep into my eyes, taking my breath away.
"Josh what's wrong?"
I shook my head again and sighed. I looked down to the floor before answering.
"I think Freya thinks I brought her here so I could propose to her."
There was silence for a moment but I didn't look up. I felt the hands on my shoulders tighten for a moment before Simon responded.
"Did you?"
"No." I replied shaking my head, staring down at our shiny black shoes. "I just wanted to take her out somewhere nice for once."
"Oh, good." Said Simon sounded relieved. This caught my attention and I looked back up into his eyes. I could see the relief that matched his voice, flood his eyes and take over his face.
Why does he look so relieved?
"Good." I questioned with a raised eyebrow.
Simon immediately began to look flustered bringing his hands from my shoulders, causing them to become cold. He put one hand in his pocket while the other scratched at the back of his head.
"I mean, ummm. Shit. That sounded bad didn't it?" he asked embarrassed.
I felt a smile take over my face. "Kind of." I replied.
Simon let out a small laugh before removing his hand from his head, putting it in his pocket as well.
"So," I started after a moment of awkward silence, "Why are you here?"
I watched as his cheeks got red and his stare became bashful as he spoke, "I'm on a date."
"Oh really?" I asked, jealousy raging up inside of me but I was determined to not let it show. "With who?"
"This guy I met on a dating website. His name is David. He's pretty cool and really funny." Simon said as if it was the most uninteresting thing in the world
"That's cool." I replied, tying to squish down any disappointment that I had from Simon not saying that the guy was a total dick. That would have been awesome. "How is it going?"
Simon shrugged his shoulders. "I mean, it's going alright but like there is no spark, ya know. I mean we get along great and everything but there is nothing there, ya know."
I nodded in understanding. Relief flooding through my veins at the news. "So what are you going to do?"
Simon shrugged again, before looking at the ground. "I guess I am gonna tell him that there isn't any connection and thank him for the good time."
"Sounds like a good idea." I replied.
He looked back up at me, his eyes full of worry. I felt sadness run through me at the sight of his worry. I didn't know what to do, so I just opened my arms to him. He gave a small, grateful smile before moving towards me and wrapping his arms around me. As I hugged him, I realized this hug felt more intimate than normal. His arms were wrapped around my middle while mine were wrapped around his shoulders. I felt him rest his head against me as he left out a soft breath. I felt a peace and tranquility that I never have before while hugging him. Deciding to get comfortable, I leaned my head against his and closed my eyes.
We stood there for a moment, just enjoying each other. I could feel his hot breath hit my skin. I could smell the cleanliness and feel the softness of his hair. I could feel the warmth that came from his body. This was truly a peaceful moment with him that I never wanted to end.
After a few moments Simon spoke up.
"What are you going to do about Freya?"
I let out a sigh as buried my face into his hair, tightening my grip around his shoulders.
"I don't know." I replied honestly. I felt as Simon tightened his grip on me as well. "I actually think I don't want to be with her anymore."
Simon quickly pulled back so he could look at me and I moved my head so I could meet his gaze. His arms still rested around my middle which made it so his face was still close to mine.
"Are you sure?" he asked quietly.
"Yeah." I replied back softly, watching his eyes go wide as something flashed threw them. Hope?
"Ok." He just replied before smiling slightly. I smiled back while staring into his eyes. The moment just felt so right. Our arms around each other just staring contently into one another's eyes. I leaned forward and rested my head against his causing his smile to get wider as we stood there. It was like we were under a spell and the tiniest thing from the outside world could break it.
I felt his hot breath hit my lips causing my gaze too look down for just a moment. A moment is all it took. My eyes flickered back up his. I felt my breath leave my body when I saw the look in his eyes. His blues swirled with hope and love causing his eyes to look more beautiful than they have ever before.
Then, my body moving of its own accord, I leaned forward slowly, watching Simon's eyes as I connected our lips lightly. It was just a simple brushing of the lips before I pulled back, feeling sparks dancing on my lips. Simon, who apparently wanted more, quickly chased my lips with his own, bringing us to a firmer kiss.
I felt my eyes slide shut as I focused on the moment. I felt as our lips moved together, our noses lightly brushing as we kissed. Sparks flying between our lips as we lost ourselves in a simple kiss.
After a few moments we ended the kiss together. We didn't pull back that far before I opened my eyes to see those beautiful blues, filled with happiness, while his face had one of shock.
I smiled at him and let a small laugh, causing him to smile back and laugh as well. We just stood there for a moment, enjoying each other and the peace around us once more before Simon spoke.
"You know Josh."
"What Simon?"
"We should probably get back to our dates for the night."
I sighed and leaned my head forward so it could rest on his shoulder. "I guess so."
I heard him chuckle as he moved his hands so he could pull my head from my shoulder.
"I'll see you at home though, yeah?" he asked, a little worry entering his eyes.
I smiled at him and leaned forward to kiss his nose. "Yeah."
He giggled. "Good, because honestly, I would be really disappointed if you weren't going to be."
"Well we can't have that, now can we?"
"Nope."
I smiled and quickly kissed him again before removing my arms from him and he from me. We smiled at each other for a moment before Simon turned and walked towards the door of the bathroom. I followed him. As I did, I let a shit eating grin take over my face.
Now this is a man I would marry.
