Chapter IV - Secrets Revealed
"You have some explaining to do Dame-Tsuna." Reborn and I had just entered my room when those words came out of the arcobaleno's mouth. I froze along with Primo's family who were all floating around in various parts of my bedroom.
"What do you mean, Reborn?" I asked feigning ignorance while internally praying to kami that he hadn't figured out what I thought he had. I mean I figured he would figure it out eventually seeing as how he's the world's greatest hitman and all, but I never thought that he would figure out my secret this quickly!
"In your fight with Gokudera I noticed something rather peculiar. Your reactions to the Dynamite were slow. It was almost like you didn't know where they were." He whispered the last sentence almost as if he were speaking to himself. Still, with the silence that hung in the room, everyone heard it. I sucked in a breath unconsciously at the deductions he was making. He remained silent for a moment before his energy wavered slightly. I could almost picture his eyes widening in realization.
"Tsuna, are you blind?" I flinched slightly as I felt the weight of his gaze. Unfortunately, that flinch was as good as a verbal confirmation for Reborn. "but how? You seem to function just as well as a person who can see. How do you do it?" His energy expressed disbelief at the new information that he had been given.
I sighed as I realized I no longer had any choice but to tell him the whole story. Well, maybe I would leave out a few details here and there. I sat at my desk before gesturing for Reborn to take a seat on my bed. "You might as well sit down, this might take a while." The yellow aura that was Reborn seemed to nod before jumping up on my bed. "Well I guess I should start from the beginning. It happened six years ago, when I was seven. I was walking home from school when I was grabbed by two men and knocked unconscious. When I came to I found myself in this abandoned factory. I still remember how the place reeked of alcohol. When the men realized I was awake they called for their boss. He was a blond man with green eyes. I remember the cruel look in his eyes as he looked at me with disgust." I shivered as I thought back to that day. "He said something about a young lion before slamming my head into a wall. I can still almost feel the blood running down the back of my neck." I hugged myself as I slowly relived the experience. I hated remembering that day. "He let go of me and told the two other men to kill me. I don't remember everything after that. Just the pain as they cut me. T-Then one of them got up and...and he walked over to a shelf and grabbed an old plastic container." Tears spilled from my sightless eyes. Reborn remained silent as I tried to collect myself to continue the story. "He came back over and forced my eyes open. I remember his crazed brown eyes before he poured the liquid into them. I-It burned. I thought they were on fire." By now I hunched over and full out sobbing. Giotto and the other ghosts were whispering soothing words of encouragement as I tried to finish my story. "After that I felt this weird sensation. Like a fire was burning inside of me trying to rip its way to the surface yet it didn't hurt. I felt something like a dam inside of me breaking (Nono's seal). I released the strange power. I remember hearing the men's laughs turn to pain filled screams before losing consciousness. When I awoke I couldn't see anything. I was blind, but at the same time I wasn't. It was strange. Like I could sense where everything was. I managed to drag myself out of the building. Even though I couldn't see I had a feeling as to where I needed to go. I don't know how this is possible, but I found my way home. As I made my way home I found that I could see people. Well not really see, but in my mind I could picture where everyone that were nearby were. Since then I have found that everyone has one of these strange auras. The auras only come in specific colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. You have a yellow aura, Kaa-san has an orange aura, and Gokudera-san has a red aura. It is thanks to this that I can tell where everything is. Also, everyone releases this type of energy. It is thanks to this that I can decipher people's emotions and whether or not they are lying. Unfortunately in today's fight I had a hard time keeping up with where all the dynamite were. I had to really concentrate to hear and sense where they were. Then I felt Gokudera-san's energy waver and I knew something was wrong. I heard the dynamite hit the ground around his feet. I wasn't really thinking. I just pushed him out of the way. I didn't want him to get hurt." I finished speaking and Reborn remained silent. I wiped my tears away and took in a shaky breath of air. I tried to stand but a sharp pain in my back caused me to sit back down. These burns were a serious pain in the ass.
Seeming to notice my pain Reborn spoke up, "Lay down Dame-Tsuna." I smiled slightly at that. Even if he were using my insulting nickname the way he said it made me feel like he cared. Obeying his command I slowly and carefully walked over to my bed and layed down. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to tell him.
"Reborn, I have a favor to ask you." He didn't say anything, but by the energy he was releasing I could tell he was listening. "Please, don't tell anyone about my blindness. I'll tell others, but only after I feel like I can trust them. Even though I am blind I don't want to be treated like I am fragile and broken. I want to be treated like a normal person." I looked into where the sun arcobaleno's eyes would be as I pleaded with him to keep my secret. After a minute of silence Reborn finally spoke up.
"Alright Dame-Tsuna, but on one condition." I felt nerves flutter around in my stomach.
"And that is?"
"Tell Gokudera. He has already pledged his loyalty to you. He deserves to know the truth." I fisted my hands ignoring the throbbing pain of my burns. My heart thudded in my chest at the prospect of revealing my secret to Gokudera. I mean would he reject me? Would he think that I'm weak? I didn't want to lose him! He was my storm!! "You don't need to worry Tsuna. He is loyal to you. He won't betray you." Those words caused something within me to click. I nodded my head in agreement. "Get some sleep Dame-Tsuna. I'll wake you up when dinner's ready."
Relaxing my body I smiled. "Arigato Reborn." I heard the sound of my bedroom door closing before letting myself fall asleep.
That all happened yesterday. Now I found myself sitting on some pillows on my floor with Gokudera seated across from me. A table having been set up between us. Reborn entered the room and sat next to me.
"What did you call me for, Reborn-san? From what I could tell you seemed serious about something."
"I'm always serious." was the hitman's response which got a sweatdrop from me. "Anyways, as to the reason I called you here. It has to do with Tsuna-"
"WHAT! Jyuudaime! Are you alright!? You're not hurt are you!? Are you in trouble!?" Gokudera shouted worriedly as he fretted over me. I smiled fondly at him.
"I'm alright Gokudera. I just thought that you deserved to know something about me." The storm stopped and went back to his seat.
"What is it Jyuudaime?" He asked curiously.
I took a deep breath and released it. There was no point beating around the bush so I decided to just say it. "What I am about to say I must ask you not to share with anyone outside of this room." I gave him a serious look which caused his energy to steel itself showing me that he was serious as well.
"Of course Jyuudaime, you have my word. If I am to break it I will kill myself then and there."
"A-Ah, there is no need for you to go that far, Gokudera-san." I smiled awkwardly at his announcement. I pushed the smile away though as I let my useless eyes meet his. "I'm blind." Silence.
"...ha..ha...ha... that was a funny joke Jyuudaime." Gokudera laughed hesitantly unable to believe what I had just said.
"I'm telling the truth Gokudera. I've been blind for six years now."
"WHAT!!! B-But! How!? I mean you can't be! I mean how did you fight me then? Or know where my dynamite were? and...and."
"Calm down Gokudera-san." said man froze before looking me in the eyes. "I will explain what I can. I can't bring myself to tell you how I became blind yet so give me a bit of time to prepare myself. I will tell you eventually, but not yet. Okay?" The bomber didn't seem to like not knowing, but he still nodded in acceptance. "Thankyou. As for how I am able to function so well. It's hard to explain, but I can see, just not using my eyes."
"LIKE PSYCHICALLY!?" Gokudera asked excitedly. If I could see he would probably have stars in his eyes.
I sweatdropped, "I guess you could put it that way. I see using my mind. I can see people through this strange ability to see or picture auras. Everyone has one. They come in seven different colors. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. My mind picks up on these auras so that I can mentally see a picture of a person. On top of auras I am also able to sense a type of energy people release. This allows me to figure out the emotions of those around me and to tell whether or not someone is lying. As for my ability to get around places. Well that is basically a mix of memorization and familiarity with my surroundings and sensing where things are. I don't know how I do it, but I can almost feel where things are. If there is a wall in front of me or something."
"Intuition?" Reborn spoke up.
"Yeah, that is also how I was also how I was able to tell where your dynamite were. Well that and listening for the hiss of the fuses." I explained. I didn't say anything about it, but I already had theories as to how I have my abilities. Primo and I came to the conclusion that my Hyper Intuition adapted to make up for my lack of sight. I had to admit the power of Hyper Intuition was rather scary. Turning back to Gokudera I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could Gokudera spoke up. "Jyuudaime! Don't you worry. I will help you in anyway that I can."
I sighed, "That is exactly what I do not want, Gokudera-san." I could tell by his energy that he was confused. "Even though you now know that I am blind I want you to treat me like a normal person. I don't want to be treated like I am different. I may be blind, but I can still function thanks to my abilities."
"If that is what you want." Gokudera still seemed concerned.
I smiled at him in hopes of relieving him of some of his concerns, "Don't worry, I'll be just fine. I'll be even better now that I have you as a friend and if I ever need help I'll be sure to let you know."
Gokudera nodded before seeming to realize something, "Alright Jyuudaime."
"You know I was able to see you nodd right. I may not see you physically, but I can see your aura in my mind." His red aura nodded again and I smiled. Although the smile didn't last long as a thought entered my mind. "You know, Gokudera-san, I was wondering if you could tell me something."
"Anything!"
"Could you...could you tell me what you look like?" I asked hesitantly.
I saw his energy burst happily yet there was some sadness within it as well. I felt a bit guilty for making my guardian sad causing my eyes to unconsciously fall towards the floor even though I could no longer see said floor. "Of course. I have silver hair and green eyes. I'm 5'6" and weigh 119 pounds. I guess you could say my hair is a bit long for a guy seeing as it goes down to my chin. Umm...I'm wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans, and..." he trailed off.
"One more thing...you can say no if you want to... can I touch your face? I want to be able to make a picture in my head of what you look like."
"Of course!" Almost as if he teleported he was suddenly right next to me. My eyes widened in surprise when I saw dog ears and a tail spout from his red aura. I shook my head and the ears and tail were gone. I slowly raised my hands up to his face. I lightly traced my fingers over his features taking in the shape his forehead all the way to his chin. When I finally finished painting my mental picture of my storm guardian I dropped my hands and smiled.
"Thank you." I smiled the brightest smile I could. I was so thankful that he let me do that. I would cherish the picture I had painted of him in my mind for the rest of my life. "Thank you so much, you have no idea how much that meant to me."
"No problem. There was no need to thank me."
"I will thank you anyways." I felt a weight lifted off of my chest as my storm guardian and I talked. I didn't think that I had ever felt happier in my entire life. Finally, the first member of my family was with me. After all these years of waiting.
