Chapter Three

Lyrik leaned against the side of the telephone booth. It was so good to hear Ruby's voice again, even if she was the killer. She was family. She closed her eyes, listening to the voicemail.

"I know that you think I killed you. I know how you think. I know that you believe I'm a murderer. But I'm not. I know who set the fi-i-i-ire." her voice glitched before continuing. "They're dangerous-s. I think they're c-coming after you. Maybe. But you kno-ow how you thought I was a firekeeper? I was... and-" there was a long beep, drowning out the sound of her voice.

"...But actually, I was wrong when I said that, you're not a ghost. Ghosts aren't reallll. You're stuck, stuck between heaven and hell. You're calllled a Si-l-lver Eyesss. A sort of not-necessarily-bad demon. Not because you did something. Because theyyy blocked the pathways. But not for-for-for everyone. It was an experiment.

"Anyways, that-t-t doesn't ma-ae-t-ae-errr. What ma-atters is-s that you finddd Kael Gryffinnn, and maybeee Mykellllll. Buttt also- I have tto go- they k-know where I amm, just-t watch out-t. And..." Lyrik's heart skipped a beat as she heard Ruby's next words.

"If-f you'rre listt-tenin-g-g to thisss, I'm probab-bly d-d-d-ead."

Lyrik continued to walk. The sidewalk turned crumbly the harder she stepped, and her hair whipped around her head in the wind. She sat down- as if it was possible that she was tired- and stared at an electronic board on top of a building. She loved the way the buildings were. Tall, smooth and in variations of colours, cozy but not small, always the right temparature... She knew that, in M'Dall, the houses were smaller, in grey, white, brown, black, red and pink. It didn't sound as appealing as M'Daol.

She tried to smile at a little boy walking down the street with his family, but he started crying and ran. Guilt swamped over her. Now I scare toddlers. Seriously? How bad can this get?

The electronic board flashed once again, and instead of an ad, there was a warning. It read, 'WARNING: UNIDENTIFIED GHOST-GIRL SEEN BY SIDEWALK, CALL AUTHORITIES IF SEEN'.

Great, Lyrik swore under her breath. Behind the words, the video the person with the phone was playing.

"Ugh!" she yelled, standing up and glaring at the board. "So everyone's dead, my thirteen-year-old sister Ruby knew random stuff about ghosts, some agency is out to get me, I'm having visions, I can't talk, and now if someone sees me, I'll be taken to prison or something?!"

"I wish I had just died," she muttered under her breath. "Then I wouldn't have to go through this." She blinked.

"Also, I'm not a ghost, I'm a Silver Eyes!" she screamed, needing to be mad at something. "Sil. Ver. Eyes! Stupid board, you can at least get it right!"

She stomped down the road.

I'm finding this 'Kael'. Maybe then I can do something about this. And whoever Mykel is.

"Let go of me!" she nearly roared as someone dared to grab her. Either way, their hand just passed through her with a shimmer of her skin.

"Crap," The woman ran.

"Yes, run, why not!" she snapped. "I certainly don't have a mind and a heart like you do!"

Another click filled her ears, similar to the one she had heard on the sidewalk. She grabbed the person's phone, seeing the video on the internet, called 'Ghost-girl Terrorizes Woman' before the screen cracked and  it powered off. Lyrik threw the phone to the floor.

Now she was just angry. Simple anger, flooding through her bones. They had no idea who she was, or that she had seen her house burn, and hear screams in the fire, or that she had walked to here from the ocean.

"Find some other phone, if you must." She turned and continued to walk in the direction of her old home.

"Hey! Get back here!" The young man swung his fist at her, his eyes widening as it did nothing. Lyrik grabbed his fist. So I can only touch people when I'm mad, and not to be helpful? she wondered. That's convenient. Heh.

She slowly twisted his wrist, digging her nails in his skin as he tried to get away.

"I did not ask to die," she spat.

"What do you-"

"You can hear me?" She let go of his fist. "You're Kael Gryffin? Or Mykel?"

"How do you know who I am? You knew Mykel?"

"So you're Kael. Hmm. Not what I expected. I thought you would be... friendler."

"You broke my phone!" he retorted. "You made it lose battery- or something- and you threw it on the ground!"

"You took a video of me after someone provoked me and labeled it 'Ghost-girl scares woman'!"

"'Terrorizes'. What? It's what I wrote!" She scowled. So this idiot is Kael Gryffin? Obsessed with phones, language maniac?

"And who's Mykel?" Lyrik asked. "Wait- do you know someone named Ruby? Or Lyrik, for that matter?"

"I know fifty Rubys and no Lyriks," Kael responded. "Why? Who are they? Are they important?" He stuck his hand in his pocket. Another phone? So this idiot is obsessed with phones- he has two-, rude, a language maniac, jumps to conclusions, and tried to punch me?

"Ruby Thorn. Or Lyrik Thorn."

"No idea who those people are." Kael ran a hand through his brown hair. "And I know a lot of people. Wait... I think I can remember their names. Oh, I know!" He checked his phone for something. "Neveah Thorn, she had two sisters and died in a fire?"

"You knew Neveah?" Lyrik stiffened. "You knew her? My sister?"

"Your sister? So you're this 'Ruby Thorn'? Yeah... I just know her because I interviewed her a few days before she died. It was a club." Kael blushed. "I'm a reporter."

"I'm Lyrik. Not Ruby. What did she say? Did she say anything about..." Lyrik paused. "People who hate her, or the family, or about something called 'Silver Eyes'?"

"I don't know, I don't know! I can pull up the interv- wait, why should I help you?"

"Please, please. You're the only one in the world besides Mykel who can hear me, and everyone thinks I'm going to kill them or something, but I just woke up on a cliff a few days ago, and I came here, and I'm a Silver Eyes! A ghost-thing, I guess. I'm stuck between heaven and hell."

"If I help you... I can do an interview on you, and write an article about you? I mean, it's an interesting story, and my teacher is impossible to be passed by, and it's my graduating year this year, so I have to get passed by him and get a job! So sure, I'll help if I can do that!"

"Sure, interview me or whatever."

"After, after! Everyone has at least one sort of crazy thing that happens in their life. Same as you. You're a ghost."

"Silver Eyes, apparently. And it happened- is happening- now that I died."

"I-"

"So if it happened in my death, it happened in my death! Not my life!"

"You survived a fire."

"I died from a fire, actually."

"Just... It'll be more interesting if I interview you after we figure out how we can make others can hear you."

"That's the plan?" Lyrik asked skeptically. Kael shrugged.

"Well, that would be a solution. And do you have a better idea?"

"Well, we could try to do something that's possible. And what about the stuff that Ruby said? We can't just ignore that."

"What did Ruby say? Actually, how about you start from when you let a random person take a video of you- no, when you woke up on a cliff? There could be something important related to you waking up there. I mean, why there? Oh, and are you a firekeeper? He has so many questions. I guess I would. "Or an icekeeper, or a waterkeeper? I'm-"

"I will start from the beginning," Lyrik interrupted, "when I woke up on a cliff." Kael nodded and blinked.

"But first... I saw on the news that people are looking for you. To kill you." Lyrik's eyes widened. "So let's go. I can't believe I'm helping a refugee."

"I'm not a refugee, I'm a fugitive. If I were a refugee, I would be from M'Dall."

"And what's so bad about M'Dall?"

"Everything! But anyways, for a language fanatic, you should know the difference between a refugee and a fugitive!"

"Whatever."

Kael stopped to wave at a friend, then poked his head into a store, and bought a mars bar. Lyrik sighed. Of course Kael Gryffin had to be such an idiot. Of course he was. It was just her luck.
