Asher-o4
Asher looked up at the clock. It was now lunch time. His friends went to their classes a long time ago leaving him in the hallway by himself. Not feeling hungry since he had an appointment in a couple hours, he went outside and sat down in the shade where it was not as hot. The afternoon sun causing the daily heat to rise well over 100. Today seemed to be 115, according to his phone.
There were other students standing around talking, some were trying various methods to cool themselves off while others were out jogging, drenched in sweat. Asher shook his head, not understanding how they could jog out in this heat. He, himself, loved to go out on a short run, but never when it was over a hundred. He had taken cross country when he was younger, back in high school. His coach would make them run four or more laps around the track field every day, rain or shine, according to his mood. The first weeks, he almost quit, but after the first tournament, he realized he enjoyed competing, his coach even recommended a scholarship for him and one other guy in his team. If it wasn't that, he wouldn't be in this college.
Asher looked up at the sky. A few clouds were starting to build up, threatening a thunderstorm. Taking out his guitar from its case, he strummed a few strings. Not liking the sound he received, he tuned a few strings and strummed again. This time, the guitar made a much more pleasant sound.
He let his fingers do the rest as he plucked and strummed the guitar strings, playing a very familiar song from his favorite anime movie. The music grabbed him as he played with passion. His heart did somersaults at the powerful notes. Each minute felt like a second as he finished it off with a solid soft chord.
He looked up. A few student were looking at him with curiosity, while there were others who couldn't care less. Just then, his eyes wandered to a red-headed girl. Her dog sat obediently beside her. That's weird. He thought. Normally, campuses don't allow any sort of pet.
Deciding that she was probably a transfer student and didn't know that, he got up with his guitar and walked over to her. Her back was facing him as she sat on the bench, a sketchbook was in her lap as she was quickly working away with her pencil. The dog looked up at his trespassing. Asher cleared his throat to get the girls attention, but nothing happened. She continued to do what she was doing before. Giving her an odd look, he tapped her on her shoulder. "Excuse me?" The girl then looked up, her face was pale and fair. Small freckles dappled her nose and cheekbones. Her odd grey eyes were kind and innocent. Maybe even deeper than innocence itself. Soon, realization took place. This was the same girl that had bumped into him earlier. He had almost dropped his guitar and that had made him angry. Once she left in a hurry, his friends commented on how hot she was. And who was she? Putting those thoughts away, Asher continued, "I hope you realize that dogs aren't allowed on campus." The girl stared back at him blankly. As if she had no idea what he was talking about. Getting frustrated, he said it slowly shaking his head along as if she was retarded, "You can't have dogs here."
The girl looked down at her dog and back up. Her facial expression changed from that of being relaxed to panic. He didn't know if that was a good panic of realization that she may get in trouble or panic that she still doesn't understand him. Seeing her quickly put her stuff away, she got up and speed walked away.
After she was out of sight, Asher realized that the girl hadn't said a word once. Not when she bumped into him, nor during their small 'converstaion'. He decided that she spoke a different language and was a transfer student from Europe. Going with that, he looked at the time and headed back to the tree. Putting his guitar neatly tucked into his case, he then proceeded to walk off campus and to his car. He drove away, his chest tight with fear of the dreadful appointment.
