Chapter 1
Vivena POV
🍁🌸🍁🌸🍁
Today is the day. The dreaded day to move from my safe haven to utterly nowhere. What did I do to deserve this? I thought to myself as I gave the last package to the truck driver. He was helping me to load up the truck to move every piece of thing I owned. Actually it was my fault. I should have known that I would come to this day somehow. After losing my job, it was only a matter of time until my funds burned through. With the pandemic many in my company lost their jobs. Like me. I survived with what I saved for eight months straight. I tried every vacancy. But alas no one was hiring any more and all my savings were rapidly vanishing. With no hope in city life, I applied to a rural country shop as a cashier. Which gave me confirmation two days ago that they would like to hire me. With the last bit of savings I had in my account, now I am relocating into this nowhere called "Gillan". A small rural upcountry village.
"Is this all ma'am?"
The truck driver interrupted my train of thoughts and I nodded sadly. This is everything I owned for the 29 years of my life.
"Yes. That is all. You can follow my taxi and we can get there by the eve. Is that OK Mr.Hutchinson?"
" Absolutely ma'am. "
The elderly truck driver smiled and with a relieved sigh I got into the taxi and gave him the address and the route. The middle aged couple who managed the store was getting tired with age and wanted someone to help them around. They were kind enough to give their family cottage to me for a small monthly rental. I was grateful that they offered me that as I had no idea what to do otherwise. The car slowly hummed to life and as buildings by buildings passed by, I said goodbye to my lonely city life. With a heavy heart I closed my eyes.

"Miss....Miss... We are here!"
I jolted awake as the taxi driver knocked on the screen. With a thankful smile I got out of the taxi and paid the poor man his fare. The truck was parked beside the taxi and another small truck was next to them. As the taxi left, Mr.Hutchinson got out from the truck to help me with moving my small luggage to the wood cabin. Mr.And Mrs. Rivera was already at the cabin and they welcomed me with smiling faces.
"Hello there! I am Margaret and this is John. It's so nice to finally meet you, Miss.Vivena.."
"Thank you Mrs.Rivera. It's my pleasure to meet you two."
"Nonsense dear. Call me Maggie or Margaret. We are going to be good friends."
"Thank you Maggie.. You can call me Viv."
I smiled and returned her kindness as
her words lifted the heavy feeling in my chest as I genuinely smiled with them. Maybe this will be a good chapter in my life after all.
"Come on child, we cleaned up as much as we can and you can put your stuff in the cabin."
John gestured to me and they helped me and the truck driver to move my luggage and moving boxes into the cabin. It was a simple small cabin with a small living room connected to the kitchen and with a small room and a bathroom. The huge fireplace in the middle of the living room dominated the room and I found a small fireplace in the room. It was clean and neat.

I thanked them again and again while moving my things. It was such a great kindness which was really hard to find in the city. After moving my boxes and paying the driver I was relieved that everything went on smoothly.
"Alright honey, we'll leave now so that you can get settled in. Make sure to lock your doors and windows before you go to bed. And before I forget, I brought you some chicken curry and steamed rice which is on the counter top. Reheat it if it's cold. "
"Thank you so much Maggie. But you didn't have to do that."
I was speechless with her kindness. Tears were brimming in my eyes as I was amazed with the sweet gesture.
"Oh hush my dear. That's the least we can do. Before I forget, there are heaters and you can switch them on or you can use the fireplace. Wood is stocked beside them and there's a transformer if power goes out."
"Thank you! I don't know how to thank you enough! This is much more than I imagined."
I cried with happiness as I never experienced this kind of kindness. John smiled and nodded while Maggie gave me a hug. They both wished me good night as they left on their truck and I watched as they disappeared into the night.
With a small smile I closed the heavy door and switched on the porch light. Then went to explore the cabin. It was cozy and pleasant with a pine scent. I found the matches and the wood next to the fireplace and instead of turning on the heaters, I arranged the logs in the fireplace watching a YouTube video on how to light a fireplace. It was all the more exciting for me as I never had such experience. As the newly ignited flames licked at the dry crisp logs, the sound of crackling fire made a soothing humming inside the cabin. The warmth of the fire soothed my worries as I next worked on my room's fireplace.
Opening the cardboard boxes I got out my PJs and shower products and went to have a shower. They were kind enough to put clean blankets on the bed and I was relieved that I didn't have to open the boxes and make the bed. The cold and hot water relaxed my knotted muscles and hair. As a girl with shoulder length short hair, I never had troubles with washing it at night. My hair was dark and thin which was fine by me. It was like my moms and I never wanted to change that.
After a refreshing shower, I checked what Maggie left me. It was a huge plate of black chicken curry with a bowl of white fluffy rice. I reheated them in the oven and took a bottle of water from the fridge. Then went in front of the fireplace in the living room and sat on the carpet. While staring into the dancing flames, I quietly savoured and ate the meal with a relaxed mind.
