Vey
"What are you still doing here?" Kelline moaned, rolling over in her hammock and seeing the dog sitting right where she had left it.
It raised its head brightly, tail sweeping over the sandy floor. She sighed and clicked her fingers resignedly. The dog bounded over and thrust its head into her hand. She scratched behind its ears, surprised with herself.
"What am I doing?" she mused, rubbing the soft fur behind its neck. "I can't look after a dog, I can barely even look after myself!"
The black eyes looked up at her happily, the animal rolling onto its back.
No one in the area had recognized the dog, and it hadn't left her side since the beach. She looked at it critically, the bright eyes, and long legs, and fluffy tail.
"You need a name. If," she revised hastily, looking at it sharply, "you were going to stay here. Which you are not!"
The head swiveled curiously on the floor, ears raised.
"Well," Kelline mused, rubbing the dog's belly. "If I was going to keep you, and name you, it'd have to be a good one. Something classy, sleek. Like... Sheatha!"
The dog closed its mouth sharply. The eyes were narrowed and the ears drooped.
"Not Sheatha? I didn't like that name anyway. Glane? No, that sounds like a boy name. Oh." It dawned on her then, as the looked at the glossy dog.
"Vey."
The ears raised and the dog sat up, tail swishing.
"Hi Vey." Kelline whspered, running her fingers through the thick fur. "I guess that's a good name for now. Because you're not staying here." She hugged the dog tightly.
"No you're most certainly not."
