Three

"Evelyn, do you want anything from inside?" Parker asked, gently poking her side until she was conscious enough to answer.

She looked around, blinded slightly by the bright lights of the gas station, her eyes squinting a little. "Can I have a water?" She asked, sitting up and stretching, her throat suddenly feeling very dry.

He nodded. "Three waters and a packet of Starburst. Got it." He winked as he clambered out of the truck and shut the heavy door with a slam.

"You still love them?" She asked quietly, glancing back towards Jonah for the first time during their drive. Austin was just an hour away, but it was also three in the morning, and the dark had the tendency of making people feel tired.

"Yeah, I do." He chuckled, shrugging a little. "I formed a bit of an addiction after you forced me to eat them every five minutes."

She smiled, imagining the memories and replaying them in her head, then quickly blinking them away. "I still eat them, but not as often anymore."

"I'm back," Parker announced as he yanked open the door, plopping back into the driver's seat. "Three waters, some Starburst, and an air freshener that smells like flowers, I hope." He quickly handed everything out and ripped the packaging open, hanging a little tree from the rear view mirror before pulling out of the parking lot, Evelyn's eyes relaxing slightly as they moved back into the dark of the highway.

"Want one?" She turned her head to the side and watched as Parker put his hand back, letting Jonah pour a few Starburst into his palm. "Evelyn?" She looked at him in the dark and could just make out the quirk of his lips and that clever smile she was so used to, taunting her to take one.

He grinned like the Cheshire Cat when she finally reached into the box and took one, popping it into her mouth, and sat back in his seat again, satisfied.

Evelyn sat back in her own, refusing to bite into her candy like Parker did so noisily in the seat beside her. She savored it instead, and though the candy was sweet, it left a bitter taste in her mouth of what could've been, once upon a time.

"We are just in Pfleugerville," Parker suddenly declared, the lamp posts on the highway now lighting up the way as they passed lots of big, lit up stores and the few cars that continued beside them.

"We should stop at IKEA," Jonah said as they passed it, watching as it went by.

"We should not," Evelyn said back.

"We should stop there and buy a bunch of furniture, and put it in the locker rooms before they have to go out and play."

"We should not," she said again.

Parker grinned. "I like him."

"Shut up."

"So if we're not sabotaging anyone," Jonah cut in, interrupting the next sassy remark Parker would've given. "Then what exactly are we doing?" Quiet. "You said you wanted revenge, so what are you going to do to make sure that you get it?"

"You two are a bunch of amateurs," he decided when no one answered yet again.

"Excuse me," Parker said, sounding a little annoyed and offended. "I happen to be an expert level revenge-getter. So—."

"Right," Jonah interrupted again. "And I'm The Queen Of England."

"Welcome aboard, Your Majesty," Parker muttered, mumbling something about retracting his statement about liking him.

"Alright." Evelyn sighed, running a hand through her hair and pulling the hair tie off her wrist, slowly starting to put the mess of brown curls up into a ponytail. "He's my ex. I think I'm the one who gets final say in all of this."

"Thank you," she continued when no one disagreed. "I don't want to do anything crazy," she clarified. "And I don't want to do anything that will ruin Cooper's future." She ignored Parker as he visibly slumped beside her. "I just want to embarrass him enough so that he never cheats on anyone ever again."

"How are you gonna do that?" Jonah asked, glancing around as he watched the bright city lights of Austin come into view.

"I'll walk into the locker room, and I'll embarrass him in front of all of his friends."

Jonah frowned. "That's not gonna do anything. They're all friends. Trust me, they all know he cheated on you, and they probably all high-fived him when he was done."

"You could do it at half-time," Parker suggested, eyes lighting up with excitement as he hatched the scheme in his mind. "Walk out there, tell everyone what he did on the jumbo-tron, and say something crazy like, he has erectile dysfunction, or whatever."

"I am not saying that! It's so mean!" Evelyn got a little quiet. "Besides, it's not true. So it'd never work." Parker and Jonah both groaned.

"But," she kept going, catching their attention. "I do like the idea of the jumbo-tron thing."

"I knew you'd come around," Parker told her, grinning, and he reached an arm back, wrapping an arm around the passenger's seat and tapping out a rhythm. "And I didn't even have to bring out the pepperoni shots."

"That sounds disgusting," Evelyn voiced, rolling her eyes.

"It sounds awesome," Parker redirected her.

Jonah just rolled his eyes, and his eyebrows suddenly furrowed as the truck pulled into a McDonald's drive thru. "Wait a minute."

"Look, no one needs to complain, okay? I happen to like McDonald's." Parker huffed, and Evelyn held in a laugh, knowing he took his fast food seriously, everyone pausing as he opened the banged up door of the truck to order.

"I was just saying," Jonah proceeded, eyeing Parker carefully to make sure he wouldn't interrupt anything again. "If you go out there, and you're on the jumbo-tron, not only will the headline of every YouTube article be Douchebag Gets Dumped At Basketball Game," he put his hands into the air and spread them like he had some big picture in his mind. "But they'll also say, Crazy Girl Dumps Boyfriend At Basketball Game."

Evelyn frowned, thanking Parker as he handed her a soda and popped a fry into her mouth, the truck lurching forward as they pulled out of the drive thru. "He has a point," she said, sighing.

"It doesn't matter!" Parker mashed his words together like the hamburger between his teeth, winking at Evelyn as she took it from his hands and fed it to him so he could drive. "Besides," he motioned towards his cup and she lifted that too with a laugh, letting him take a sip as he kept his eyes on the road. "The main point is to embarrass him as much as possible."

"Without embarrassing Evelyn," Jonah explained, already halfway through his own burger, pulling a piece of lettuce he'd missed out of the bun.

Parker sighed. "Fine. Does that mean that the jumbo-tron idea is completely out of the deal?"

Evelyn nodded and Parker pouted, pushing out his bottom lip. "Well," Jonah added, looking between the two of them. "What if there was a way to have our cake and eat it, too?"

"I'm listening," Evelyn said, a smile coming on.

Parker grinned through a mouth full of food. "I heard you say cake."

"You have selective hearing," she teased. "The only times you ever pay attention are when food is involved, Parker."

"You're right," he said quickly, getting her off his case and getting back to the previous conversation. "You mentioned cake?"

Jonah chuckled. "Not literal cake." Parker slumped. "Look, I'm not a mechanic, but I am really good with computers. If we could find some way to hack into the jumbo-tron system, we could project something onto it. I don't know, like a picture of Cooper, his jersey."

Evelyn stared at him, a smile slowly spreading across her face as Parker pulled the truck to a stop in the empty parking lot of the basketball stadium. "If we could get access to the speakers... Can you even do that?"

"Please." Jonah grinned, popping the last Starburst into his mouth. "Unlimited access is my middle name."

Parker laughed. "Hers, too." He only laughed more as she smacked his chest, Jonah rolling his eyes as he got out of the truck.

He chuckled to himself weakly, rubbing at the nape of his neck and shaking his head. "God, I hope not."
