Chapter 4. Lessons.

Finally the last child entered the hut. Raven smiled. "Finally. Okay, class, today we have two new people joining us. This is Lumi, and Tem. Please be nice to them." The two children could feel the others staring at them, and blushed slightly. Raven clapped his hands for attention. "Let's begin."

'Let's begin' seemed to mean a lot to everyone. They all jumped up and walked to a certain spot in the hut, each drawing a sword out of a sheath. Lumi and Tem sat there for a moment, until Raven noticed them. He nodded, and shouted:

"Get into partners and practise!" Then beckoned the two youngsters into the door he had opened. A warm breeze came from there, not too hot like it was in Sevlata, and not too cold like it was in Senca. Just right.

Raven noticed the children's refreshed looks and grinned. "It's nice here, isn't it?"

The pair nodded, then glared at each other, not wanting to agree on anything.

Raven chuckled and pushed the two through, and followed. "Okay. I'll teach you some basic stuff." He thrust the sword forward. "This is the stab. Just thrust the sword forward." He laughed as the two tried. "No, like this." He did it again, and watched the pair. "Better. Keep trying." He said, and walked back into the hut.

The two children practised the move, Tem doing harder, Lumi more precisely. Soon each child had mastered that move.

Raven came back, congratulated them and taught them other moves, each time going away for about ten minutes. Soon they had both learnt the stab, the lunge, the cut to the head (where Lumi almost did cut off Tem's head), the parry and they were halfway to learning the parry repost. Raven was beaming toward the end of the lesson.

"I think..." He said. "That the two of you should have a duel. No violence, a simple friendly." He didn't notice the death glares the pair were sending at each other.

Soon the two were dressed up in protective clothing of steel leaf, the thinnest yet strongest metal the land could offer, each clutching their sword. The other, older students surrounded them, each talking excitedly. Each of them could remember their first battle - even the older teenagers.

Soon they grew silent as the two younger children began to circle each other. Tem was slower and louder while Lumi was more graceful... But the same speed. Tem stumbled, and Lumi took that chance to strike.

She swung a cut-to-the-head at him. He bought the sword up out of instinct, and they clashed, metal against metal. The ringing sound echoed through the valley. No-one else was there to hear it.

Tem quickly recovered, and tried the same move, hoping it didn't look like copying.

The word 'copy cat' spread across the onlookers.

Tem's face burned. He focused on the battle again - and just in time. Lumi swung her sword again, this time a lunge. Again, out of instinct, he bought the sword up. But this time, Lumi had expected it.

She bought her sword down, near his belly. Becuase of the safety equitment, she didn't hurt him. But he still stumbled backwards into the crowd out of shock. Hooting echoed behind him from the crowd. Behind her mask, Lumi shot them a grin.

Tem was fuming with rage. He was annoyed he had been showed up by a girl. Seeing as he was the 'chosen one' and all, he should be able to defeat all but his match.

Even at this age.

Anger powered his attacks. He sprung himself back up, and slashed at Lumi with attacks that hadn't been taught, mostly just swishing the sword through the air. 'Non violent' was what Raven had said. Wasn't going to happen.

His blade caught Lumi on her arm - where there was a small rip in the steel-leaf. She gasped slightly, again out of shock. Once again the shock was quickly replaced by anger. Both of them were out to injure the other, be it emotionally or physically.

Tem's blade, crafted from almost silky looking black Lifk, swung again towards Lumi. She swung her sword, made out of the purest of white Clpest, to meet his, white and blade clashing. The onlookers murmured to each other. The fighters didn't listen to their comments, both were to engrossed in trying to murder the other.

After a brief struggle with the two blades clashing, They both spun each other's off. The pair recovered quickly. Lumi lunged. Tem tried for a parry.

Seeing his attack coming, Lumi thought quickly. She could duck out of the way, or...

She bought the sword across his, blocking the parry, and swung the blade at his head almost professionally. Tem staggered back, and fell over his clumsy six-year-old feet. Link took this chance to end the fight.

She positioned one foot on his chest, and held the sword tip to his throat. A moment's silence commenced, before the watchers cheered loudly. Lumi had won.

Her grin grew wider as she got her foot off Tem's chest and offered him a hand up. He ignored her offer and got up himself. She shrugged, and sheathed her blade. After a moment of death glares shot at her, Tem did the same.

Raven clapped his rough hands together to draw attention to himself. The group's talk slowly died down as they turned to look at their instructor. "Well, that was exiting. Well done to you too, and I hope you all enjoyed watching that. See you all next week."

And with that, the first of many sword training class ended.

The pair waited behind, unable to walk home due to safety reasons. Tem's horse and cart arrived first, then Lumi's mom. The two children arrived home with the same thought on their  mind...

... Who was that other child? And why had they seemed so familiar?
