Different is okay
Okay, this one is a trans au story, as suggested by janek429. Wish me luck.
Warnings: mentions of suicide. That's a first.
"Will sighed as he fell on his bed. Why do I have to go through these things? Will wondered It's so hard to just be myself. Will is what he called himself 'different'. Will didn't like the things most boys his age did. He preferred skirts to shorts. Long hair to short. Pink rather than blue. Will wanted to be called 'Willie' rather than 'Will' or 'William'. Will wanted to be female. So, for the rest of this story, I shall be referring Will to a 'she' rather than a 'he'. And I will call her 'Willie' rather than 'Will'.
Willie tried to tell her parents so many times, but she never got the courage to. Nobody knew about her. Not even her best friend, Nico. God did she have a crush on Nico. She couldn't tell him, though. He would just... push her away. Willie was convinced of it.
Willie has another secret, that's much harder to keep. She only told one person, who constantly tried to help her. Nico.
She hurt. She hurt emotionally and physically. She wanted so badly to die and just end everything. She has the scars to prove it. She hadn't cut in a few weeks, so she considered that progress.
"Will!" Her mother called to Willie.
"Yeah, mum?" Willie called back.
"Nico is here!" Willie held back a squeal of excitement.
"Send him up!" Willie soon heard footsteps. Someone knocked on her door.
"Will? Are you in here?" Nico asked.
"No, I'm in Canada eating pancakes with extra maple syrup and some bacon while apologising to everyone," Willie responded. Nico opened the door and let himself in. Nico had short black hair, tan skin and the most beautiful brown eyes (in Willies opinion). Nico was also taller than Willie. Nico smiled.
"Hey, Will. How're you feeling?" Nico asked. Nico walked up to Willie's bed and sat down next to her. Willie frowned.
"I've been better," she admitted. Nico frowned and sighed.
"Will, you're depressed but you won't tell me why. You... you hurt yourself and you won't tell me why. I want to help, Will," Nico told her.
"You do help me, Neeks,"
"Not as much as I'd like,"
"You wouldn't understand,"
"Do you not love yourself?"
"Just... drop the subject. Please,"
"No. I'm tired of not being able to help you in every way I can. Are you gay? Because if you are, I don't care,"
"I- it's- it's complicated,"
"Will... It's okay. Please, tell me what's wrong. I care about you and I'm worried," Willie sighed.
"I... I don't want to talk about it,"
"Can I guess?"
"If you really feel the need to. I'm not going to tell you if you're right no matter what you guess and even if it is right I won't say anything,"
"Okay... family problems?"
"What? Oh god no!"
"Okay... friend drama?"
"You're my only friend and there's no drama between us,"
"Uhm... girl drama,"
"...No,"
"Guy drama?"
"No,"
"your inner-self drama,"
"No,"
"Drama?"
"No,"
Nico sighed in frustration.
"Will. If you won't tell me what's wrong, at least tell me what else I can do to help,"
"Don't call me Will," Willie mumbled.
"What was that? Sorry, I didn't hear you,"
"Nothing," Willie said, quickly.
"Fine. I will find out what's wrong one way or the other. I always do,"
A few days later, Willie was home alone when she got an idea. You see, Willie has an older sister who moved out of the house three years ago, and left all of her clothes in the basement. Wille's mum never touched them because, in her words "if a baby girl ever comes into your life, you won't have to shop for clothes!" What about Willie? Willie's tired of wearing those old basketball shorts her mother gave her.
So, after Willie's mum was gone for at least an hour and Willie knew it was safe, she went down into the basement and grabbed some clothes. Willie walked back upstairs with a pink shirt, a blue skort (A/N if you don't know what a skort is, it's a mixture of shorts and a skirt. I used to wear them all the time... no more) and Willie even found a headband. Willie ran to her room and tried the clothes on. After she was done, she ran to the bathroom to see what she looked like. Her hair was blonde and a little bit long (just the way she liked it), she looked... well, she looked female. Which was all she ever wanted. Willie really enjoyed her new look. So much in fact, that she decided to keep it in her room, hidden from everybody else.
Willie ran back into her room and quickly got changed. Her mother would be home any minute. She didn't want to risk anything.
"Will? Will, I'm home!" Willie's mother yelled up.
"Hi, mum!" Willie yelled back.
"How was your day?"
"It was... it was great, actually,"
"Glad to hear it. Be a dear and help me bring in the grocery's?"
And so, whenever Willie's mum left to go somewhere, Willie would run to her room and put on her sister's old clothes. Whenever she did, she felt... she felt normal. She didn't feel like a freak, she felt like... like herself. On the inside.
This arrangement has been going on for a few months. Willie's hair had grown quite a bit, and her mum was always telling her to cut it. She obviously didn't want to. She even bought some hair bands and put her hair and a low ponytail sometimes.
Nico never questioned her, which Willie thought was great. Maybe... maybe Nico really wouldn't care if she was a girl or not.
One day, Willie's mum left to go for a date and told Willie she could invite Nico over. Willie instantly agreed. Today was the day she'd tell at least one person who really is. God, was she nervous. She felt like she was going to throw up all afternoon. When Willie's mum finally left, all Willie had to do was wait. She hated waiting. Especially at that moment. Willie had called Nico to ask if he could come over and he said yes. She also told him she wanted to tell him something, so there was no backing out now. When Wille heard a knock on the door, she ran over to open it.
"Hey, Will! What's up?" Nico asked with a smile. He frowned when he saw Willie looking nervous "Will?"
"Please, come in," Willie said as she ushered him in. Nico closed the door behind him.
"Tell me everything,"
"It'd be easier if I showed you. It's on my bed,"
"You don't want to be in the room,"
"No, it took enough courage to actually do this in the first place. So please, kindly just look," Nico nodded and headed upstairs. Wille sat on her couch and waited. She left Nico a letter telling him who she really is and how it's been hard on her and just everything.
Nico returned downstairs to see Willie sitting on the couch, knees to her chest trying not to cry.
"Will..." Nico said, his voice soft. Willie started to cry.
"I-I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you, but it was just... it was just so hard and-and-and," she started crying harder "I'm so sorry," Nico ran up to her and took her hands.
"Will-Willie. I don't care. I don't. I don't care,"
"But, I'm different," she said, still crying.
"Different is okay," Nico pulled her into a hug.
"You're... you're sure?"
"Positive. You're just another human being. You're normal,"
Nico then did something. He kissed her. On the lips. Willie was shocked, but then quickly melted into the kiss.
Nico and Willie dated for five years before they got married. Then, they adopted two little girls, named 'Alex' and 'Taylor'. Two of the sweetest, kindest kids ever,"
"Uncle Percy, we already know that," Alex says to me. I chuckle.
"Hey, you asked for the story of how your parents started dating, and I answered! Now shush, I'm not finished yet," I tell Alex and Taylor.
"Right. Continue! Continue!" Taylor says.
"Well, your mother is what she likes to call herself 'normal'. It took a long time for her to become comfortable with herself, but she doesn't regret it. Not for one day. The only thing she regrets is not accepting herself sooner, though, I'm sure that's what everyone thinks when they find out something about themselves. And so, Willie and Nico lived happily, ever after. The end," I tuck in Alex and Taylor, turn off the light, and walk downstairs to wait for Willie and Nico to come home. An hour or so later, I hear the door open.
"Hello?" Willie quietly asks.
"In here," I answer. Nico and Willie walk in.
"Are the kids in bed?" Nico asks.
"Yes. They wanted a bedtime story, so I told them your guys' story," I tell them.
"Bedtime story? They're thirteen and fourteen years old!" Willie says in disbelief.
"Even older kids need a bedtime story sometimes I suppose," I say. Nico reaches into his pocket and pulls out twenty dollars. I walk up and take it.
"Thanks," Nico says. I nod and walk out the door.
HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!Bet you thought that I was gonna make Nico the trans one, didn't you? Well, you thought wrong my friend. WRONG.
Thanks again @janek429 for the idea.
