Maka's POV
I couldn't forget what I'd seen. And I couldn't forget that our families had been mortal enemies. Yet I didn't care about what our families really did- the only thing I cared about was Soul. I suppose, my boyfriend, now. It feels oddly satisfying to say that. 'Talking to yourself, Maka? I sighed, feeling doomed. Soul will never let me live that down. 'Damn right I won't.' 'Get out of my head!' I snapped. When I glimpsed his hurt expression, my mood softened. 'Sorry. I'm just really confused right now, and having someone in my head critiquing every thought I have isn't exactly helping right now.'

'But I have to tell my father. I'm going to ask him what he did to us, why, and-' 'and knowing you, you're probably not going to listen to him.' 'I think, now that some of our powers have revealed themselves, I think that... nothing is safe anymore.' My thoughts drifts to my father, and my mind clouds with anger. 'Whoa, whoa, chill there, Maka. We're not going on a murder spree. That's your father?' It would only make sense if we could share pictures as well, conveniently. I suppose we can share memories, too. I attempted to test this by sending him memories, emotions, and impressions.

Soul was silent throughout as he absorbed the information. Eventually, though, he spoke. "Whoa." "Yeah, whoa. Um, can I live here?" We still hadn't gotten fully used to our telepathy, so our natural reaction is speech. "Yeah, at least temporarily." I pump my fist into the air, accidentally clipping Soul's shoulder. "Ow!" I cover my mouth to hide my chuckles. "Sorry!" I get up from the couch.

"So I'm going to confront my dad. I'll be right back." I yelled, already closing the front door. I scuff my toes on the ground as I walk across the black street, watching for cars as I make a plan to get in, yell at my father, and leave. Which is exactly what I do. When the door slams, he wraps his filthy hands around me in a hug, sobbing. "FATHER! GET OFF; I'M LEAVING. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WOULD DESTROY THE MEMORIES OF MY BEST FRIEND AND ME! YOU KIND OF STOLE MY HAPPINESS, AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE YOU ANY FURTHER." As I yell this, I enter my room and stratagetically pack up my possessions- my clothes, toiletries, and my laptop. I slammed the front door as I left, a sense of satisfaction and finality emanating loudly along with the thump of wood. Halfway across the street, I heard a shout from behind me. "Maka! Wait! If you're going to leave, then..." He spoke to me with his head lowered, eyes downcast. Maybe he actually was ashamed. "Then at least take this. It will explain everything." My father held out a letter. I couldn't see who it was from, but it had my name on it, and the writing seemed to be familiar. I snatched it out of his hands, and my father dashed back to his house, his hair overshadowing his eyes. Glancing around, I see that there are, miraculously, still no cars. And then I stepped into Soul's house, taking my luggage to my now permanent room. After that, I went to search for Soul, who was playing an older Gamecube game- Pokemon XD; Gale of Darkness. As I sat down next to him, he paused the screen and looked up at me. "You're settled in, I see. That was quick." At first I wondered why, but I finally figured it out- he'd scanned my thoughts.
I brought out the familiar yet strange envelope, opened it, and slid out the contents. I unfolded the thin paper and sighed, with Soul watching my every move.
"Now... let's get cracking."
