The Void

Media: "October" by Evanescence

It hurt too much to think about. It had been a part of her life for so long - it seemed like forever - and then suddenly it was... gone. Forever. All the memories, the experiences they'd shared... They were gone, and they were never coming back.

She wondered why she subjected to herself to this torture every time. Why not just avoid it altogether? But then... She tried to imagine her life without this wonderful, wonderful thing and realized she couldn't.

It didn't lessen the pain, but it eased the numbness she felt to remember the good times she'd had. Those memories, the smiles, the laughs, everything that made this wonderful thing so wonderful. All the firsts, and the hundreds that would follow.

The lasts, too. It was bittersweet, thinking about it. Going through it. Knowing that that had been the last. That it wasn't coming back.

It'd be back in the future. Or, something like it would. This... This was gone forever.

It felt like there was a void in her soul. Every last left a void. She thought that if she kept going with this, that maybe the void would be filled with the new one. But no. Instead it left another void right next to the old one.

The old void doesn't hurt as much anymore. It's been a while, it's had time to heal. The new one helped, too.

This new void, it's fresh. It hurts so, so bad.

She couldn't tell what she was feeling. Angry, sad, numb... It was all just a blur, just sitting in the void. It was an effort to keep going through the motions. Sometimes she just stopped. Sat still, and let all the emotions, everything she was repressing, just wash over her.

It would heal, in time. Not completely, but enough that it wouldn't cripple her anymore.

The promise of the next one kept her going. It felt so far away, but in the meantime, there were other things she could focus on.

She would keep going. It would hurt, seeing those reminders every day. But she would keep going. Laugh, smile, shout, sing. Everything would be alright, in time.

I'm going to tell you what this is about at the end of this author's note, but first I want you to guess. I can promise you it's probably not what you think it is.
So, November's here and guess what that means: NaNoWriMo! I did NaNo last year, but I'm not a huge fan, but I will be writing a lot, mainly because I want to get back into the habit again. Also marching band's over [:,(], so now I have a ton of free time.
First thing, I want to try to write a short story every day for this month, starting with this one. I procrastinated a lot today and then I looked at the time and it was 7 and I was like welp. So I ended up just emotion dumping about this thing that I can't stop thinking about. So now this exists.
Second, I have this not-so-little project that I've been working on for over a year that I'm excited to share.
Okay, are all your guesses in? Last chance before the reveal...
It's about marching band. In case you didn't already know, I'm a major band geek. Marching band becomes my life from June through October. It ends very suddenly. We have our final competition, and then that's it. Something that was very alive just five minutes ago is now gone forever. I throw myself completely into it, and now I feel like there's a literal void in my soul left from the sudden absence.
So yeah. That's basically me. I was writing another thing about marching band without mentioning that it was about marching band and I realized it sounded kind of like it was about a romantic relationship and I was like I can run with this.
Fun fact, there is a very strong correlation in my mind between the song in the media and marching band for reasons I'll have to explain some other time.
This author's note is almost as long as the actual short story I'm just going to end it here.
Until next time,
~ Patchesmimi
