Everyone Has Secrets

(Frisk's P.O.V.)

I pat Papyrus on the back. I have no idea what to say.

We're both sat and the bar in Grillby's. We'd decided to come here for lunch in memory of Sans. Before this, Papyrus had shut himself in his room all morning. We could hear him crying from downstairs.

When we'd arrived at the bar, I gave Grillby a sign Sans had taught me. Seeing my signal and the crying Papyrus, Grillby cleared the bar, leaving the three of us. I told Grillby what happened. Well, the false version of what happened. He said everything we have today is on the house.

I'm drinking ketchup (I feel like I have to, and it's actually pretty good) while Papyrus plays with the plate of spaghetti in front of him, not eating.

I pull out my phone. While Papyrus and Grillby aren't looking, I call Sans.

Nothing. Straight to voicemail.

'I can't believe it,' Grillby says. 'Sans, dead. I knew he was never in the best place but I never thought he'd go this far.'

'I... I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HE WAS DEPRESSED,' Papyrus says. 'IF I WAS THERE FOR HIM, MAYBE HE WOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS... I WAS THE WORST BROTHER EVER!'

He bursts into sobs. I pull him into a hug.

'That's not true!' I say. 'You're the best brother anyone could ever ask for! You have no reason to blame yourself for Sans's death.'

'You're right, Frisk, he's not to blame,' another voice, one I recognise, says. 'No one is...given that he's alive.'

'WHAT?!' Papyrus and Grillby gasp.

We turn around to see a familiar golden flower. He's holding a notebook with a vine.

'Yup, you heard me correctly,' Flowey says. 'Sans is alive but, of course, you already know that. Right, Frisk?'

'HE'S ALIVE?!' Papyrus gasps, still shocked.

'And you knew, Frisk...' Grillby says. 'Why did you lie?'

I sigh. There's no getting out of this. I pull out the letter Sans left me and put it on the counter. Papyrus and Grillby read it, their eyes widening as they go along.

'WHY?' Papyrus asks. 'WHY DID HE PRETEND TO COMMIT SUICIDE?'

'And what's this secret he keeps mentioning?' Grillby asks.

I look over at Flowey, trying to see if he knows. He does, the smirk of his face proving it.

'You gonna tell them, Frisk?' he asks. 'Or do I have to do it?'

Papyrus and Grillby are looking at me, expectantly. I take a deep breath and try to tell them.

'He...Sans, he...' I try to say. 'I can't! I promised I wouldn't...'

'Guess I have to then,' Flowey says. He disappears into the ground and resurfaces on the counter. He places the notebook in front of Papyrus and Grillby. I finally get a close look at it. The cover says 'Diary 201X – 201Y'.

'This is Smiley Trashbag's diary,' Flowey says. 'Take a look through it and I think you'll understand.'

Papyrus opens the diary and flicks through the pages, both him and Grillby reading carefully. I see a look of dawning realisation and shock appear on Grillby's face.

'Oh my god,' he says. 'I... I can't believe this...'

'WHAT?' Papyrus asks. 'I DON'T GET IT.'

'I'll tell you what it is,' Flowey says. 'Your brother is a werewolf.'

'WHAT?!' Papyrus yells, shocked.

'Yep. And last night, Little Miss Determined here almost got herself killed, causing Wolfy Trashbag to get scared and run away,' Flowey explains. He turns to the window. 'Your cover's blown, Wolfy Trashbag. You lose!'

We all turn to the window to see Sans, scowling at Flowey. He notices us looking at him, he says something we can't here (but I read his lips; he says 'fuck,') and starts running away. Papyrus, of course, jumps out the window and quickly catches up to his brother, pulling him into a hug.

'SANS!' he cries, tears of happiness and relief falling down his face. 'I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE OKAY! I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD BUT YOU'RE NOT AND I'M SO HAPPY AND WHY DID YOU LIE AND RUN AWAY WHEN YOU COULD HAVE JUST TOLD ME YOU'RE A WEREWOLF?!'

'i...' Sans says, 'you...you don't hate me? you...don't think i'm a beast?'

'OF COURSE NOT!' Papyrus says in response. 'WHY WOULD YOU THINK THAT?'

'b-because...werewolves are...are hated by monsters...by everyone,' Sans says, tears beginning to well in his eyes. I can't tell if it's from sadness or happiness. 'hated and f-feared.'

'SANS, YOU'RE MY BROTHER! I WOULD NEVER HATE YOU!' Papyrus says.

Sans burst into tears, holding Papyrus tightly. I can't help but smile. I climb out the window myself and join the hug.

'thank you...thank you for not discriminating,' Sans says. 'what about you, grillbz? you okay with this?'

'Sans,' Grillby says. 'You're my best customer. If it weren't for you, this place would have gone out of business years ago. Of course I'm okay with it. You're still the same skeleton who causes me to have to restock ketchup supplies every week.'

'thanks,' Sans smiles, as we go back inside the bar.

'You'll have to pay for the window, though,' Grillby says.

'put it on my tab,' Sans replies, nonchalantly.

'Wait, what?!' Flowey yells. 'You just found out your brother/friend has been lying to you for years and is a horrible beast and don't care at all?! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!'

'hey, petal boy,' Sans says. 'you're plan failed. now knock it off.'

'Petal Boy?!' Flowey growls.

'would you prefer something else? weed? or maybe...ASRIEL,' Sans smiles.

'What?!' Grillby gasps. 'Prince Asriel?!'

'You little sh-' Flowey begins but is cut off.

'hey, no swearing in front of paps,' Sans says.

'Wait, he's Prince Asriel?!' Grillby says.

Flowey sighs and explains everything. The DETERMINATION experiments, how he couldn't feel emotions, how he absorbed everyone's souls and turned back into himself and fought me, how he broke the barrier and freed monsters before turning back into Flowey.

'So...yeah...' Flowey finishes.

'Do Asgore and Toriel know?' Grillby asks.

'No,' I say.

'And that's how it's going to stay. I only told you because of Wolfy Trashbag here,' Flowey adds.

'Papyrus, I would have expected you to be more surprised by this, given you and Flowey talked in the Underground,' I say. Papyrus hadn't really had a reaction to the news about the flower.

Papyrus and Sans both look at each other. 'i think we have to tell her,' Sans says. 'grillbz, can we have a bit of privacy?'

'Sure,' Grillby says, going to the kitchen.

'I KNOW ABOUT AND REMEMBER TIMELINES,' Papyrus says.

'What?!' Flowey and I say at exactly the same time.

'it runs in the family. so, he knows everything i know,' Sans says.

'So, you remember the Genocide Run...' I say. 'Oh god, Paps, I'm so sorry! I don't know what to say, I- '

'IT'S OKAY, HUMAN! REMEMBER, I SAID I'D BELIEVE IN YOU NO MATTER WHAT!' Papyrus smiles.

'But, when I was in control of the timeline, there were times where I was bored and just killed you for fun. Why did you keep coming back to me even though you knew I'd probably slaughter you?' Flowey asks.

'I WANTED TO HELP YOU!' Papyrus says. 'EVERYONE CAN BE A GOOD PERSON IF THEY JUST TRY!'

'also, it was part of the plan,' Sans adds. 'we decided i'd make my knowledge of timelines clear to whoever was in control of them while paps would just play dumb. we wanted to use it to our advantage.'

There's long moment of silence as we all take in all the new information we've received.

'So, Sans is a werewolf, Flowey is Asriel and Papyrus knows about timelines. Anything else anyone needs to get off their chest?' I ask.

No one says anything.

'Okay,' I say, standing. 'We'd better get home and let all the others know you're not dead.'
