"What happened?"
Junior doesn't look up from the dirt and glass on the floor. He continues to sweep it into the dustpan as Peter holds the trash bag open for him mere inches away. Peter isn't known for minding his own business, but it never bothered Junior before now.
The police are gone. Their tires left dirt patches in the grass much to Junior's obvious annoyance, but since Peter arrived Junior has kept his mouth shut. He didn't ask and Junior didn't bother telling him.
Junior waits until Peter begins to shift uncomfortably before he answers.
"Nothing."
Peter adjusts the trash bag in his hands for Junior to empty the dustpan and sighs.
"Why were the police here?"
Junior retracts his hand abruptly and curses when he accidentally places it on a shard of glass.
"Why does it matter? They're gone aren't they," He grits. "I'm still here and they're gone."
"Ok." Peter didn't push him further. As curious as he is, Junior wasn't someone you'd want to push too hard. Three years working in the same law firm was proof enough. Junior was the type of man that would comfort a child one minute and accuse their mother of being a bitch the next.
Junior sat.
"My girlfriend's pregnant."
