Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Sunday night I packed all the things I needed for the trip. I was guessing that it was going to be hot outside. So I mostly packed shorts and 1 or 2 pairs of jeans. The next day I woke up early to be in Ms. Hansen's class. I dressed the usual, ate breakfast and grabbed my bag. "Bye Mom and Dad." I screamed out the door.
I walked in the class room there was already a bunch of people. Ms. Hansen looked at her hand watch every second. "Let's get on the bus! Everyone on the bus!" she screamed. Everybody got on the bus and sat in their seat. I walked halfway in the bus and sat by myself next to a window. I grabbed my iPod from my back pack and put the left ear bud in my ear. I scrolled through my songs and chose "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars.
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3, I'll be there. And I know when I need it. I can count on you like 4, 3, 2, you'll be there. Cause that's what friends are -. Wes got up from where he was sitting and sat next to me.
"Wes," I said, "uhh aren't you supposed to be sitting with your nerd friend?" "He's not actually my friend and I think he'd rather be sitting with the teacher than me." I kind of chuckled under my breath. "All he does is talk to himself about the periodic table." He took out something from his back pack. "You wear glasses,"
"Yeah I wear contacts I don't know how you haven't seen it." "Okay everybody," Ms. Hansen said, "Before we go I want to take attendance." She passed by every row and asked us our last name and once she was done she told us, "Whoever you guys are sitting with is your partner for our projects." Great, just what I needed a guy I can barely support be my partner.
The whole ride none of us said a single word. Halfway there we stopped at the restaurant Applebee's. Wes sat at the same table I was sitting, "What are you doing?" I asked "Sitting with you. You seem lonely."
"Whatever."
The waitress came and took our orders. "What would you lovely couple like this evening?" she asked.
"Uhh we're not ummm a couple." I said. Wes just smiled.
"Well, you should. You guys look like a good couple. Anyways what would you like to eat, honey?"
"I'd like a chicken tender's platter and red beans and rice with Andouille sausage, please." "What about you, sweetie?"
"I'd like a blackened steak penne and chicken quesadilla grande, thank you."
"Anything to drink?"
"Coke." We both said.
"You order big." I said to Wes.
"You do to." He said back.
When we got our food he offered me some of his quesadillas. "Take one." I grabbed a couple. "Thanks."
The same waitress came to get our orders of dessert. I ordered a triple chocolate meltdown and he didn't want anything. When I got my dessert I offered Wes one. "Do you want one?"
"Why do you act like you're little miss innocent?"
"I am innocent. I haven't done anything bad and I'm full."
"Yeah, I know. You ate like three plates full of food. You ate almost half of my quesadillas." He took a piece. "You didn't put poison in them did you?" he asked. "No." I said chuckling.
"Good." he took a bite from the chocolate. "You know you have a nice smile when you laugh." "Thanks." I said almost blushing. I stared at him.
"Okay, everyone now is the time to call your parents to tell them we're half way there before we get back on the bus." Ms. Hansen said. We all walked outside and everyone, almost, took out their cell phones or borrowed one. I took mine out from my back pocket and dialed my home phone number. "Hello!" my mom said. "Hi, mom!"
"Oh, hey honey! How's it going?"
"Great, actually."
"Really?"
"Yeah, uh the teacher told us to call home to, you know, tell you that we're half way there." "That's great!" Now tell me are you sitting with anyone on the bus or is it like at your old school? And tell me the truth."
"Well," I hesitated. "I'm sitting next to a guy."
"Really!? Is he cute? C'mon tell me!"
"Uh well, he's sort of-"
"Okay, class back on the bus." Ms. Hansen said.
"Mom, I got to go."
"Wait, tell me more about the boy-"
"Okay Mom, I love you, too. Bye!" I hung up and got back on the bus. Before we left Ms. Hansen did a count check to make sure everyone was back on the bus. I put back on my ear phones and continued listening to music. When our teacher woke us up to tell us that we were there I somehow ended up on Wes's shoulder. My head must have fallen on his shoulder when I fell asleep.
After we got off the bus, Ms. Hansen introduced us to the instructors of the camp site. "Class I'd like to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Walter." Ms. Hansen gestured her hand toward them. "Just call us Richard and Daisy." The man with the uniform said.
"They let us come to this beautiful outdoors site." Ms. Hansen continued, "And for the next week we will be doing projects and exploring the outdoors." She said almost twirling around. "Now before we get all excited I have posted the names for each cabin. You will all have up to 6 roommates in your cabin." Everyone gathered up to where the list was. I waited until most of the people moved out of the way. I scanned the whole page:
Cabin 2
Jennifer
Lucy
Jaden
Hollis
Nikki
Ivy
I looked for cabin 2 and took a deep breath before going inside. I walked in and there were like about 4 girls talking. They stopped when they heard my footsteps. "Hey," I said. "I'm Jaden."
"Hey, Jaden." A pretty brunette said, "Pick any bed you want to sleep in."
I took my bag and put it on top of the bed almost at the corner.
"I'm Jennifer by the way." The brunette said, "I saw you at volley practice."
Then a pretty blonde said, "I'm Ivette, but everyone calls me Ivy."
"Nice to meet you Ivet- I mean Ivy." I said.
"I'm Hollis."
"I'm Lucy."
"I'm Nikki."
"Are you in the volleyball team?" Ivy asked.
"Yeah."
"We are, too!"
"Everyone to the lunchroom." Ms. Hansen screamed. Everyone walked into the lunchroom and sat at the picnic tables. "I know most of you are hungry by now." Ms. Hansen smiled. "When it's time for lunch you will hear a bell like at school, and if you are really hungry and can't wait then you could grab a snack. Only a snack! Now that you are all here you may get your lunch." I grabbed my lunch and stood in front of the tables. "Hey, Jaden come sit with us." Jennifer said. I walked up to their table and sat next to Nikki. "Thanks." I said. I saw Wes walk up to a table of guys.
"Hey, Jaden where did you come from?" Nikki asked.
"From Florida."
"Really?"
"Yeah, it's really sunny over there. It's sunny like every day. What's the weather around here?"
"It changes every day so it depends, but it doesn't rain much."
"Umm... I know I'm new, but is Rachel mean? The mean and popular type?"
"Don't get me started," Jennifer said, "She's a lot of things, but one thing she isn't is nice." She said kind of chuckling. "
She's really nasty." Hollis said with her hand over her hand with her mouth full of food. "Look who's talking?" Lucy said.
I took a bite from my burger and when I looked up I saw Wes looking at me. He smiled at me and I smiled back.
''Looks like Wes has an interest in you!" Nikki said, "Does he like you?"
"No, but he's nice. He helped me on my first day."
"Who helped you on your first day?" Jennifer said entering the conversation.
"Wes," Nikki answered.
"Wes? He helped you?" Jennifer questioned, "Did he say anything to you?"
"Yeah." I answered.
"Wes doesn't do talking. Nobody really hangs out with him and if someone did he wouldn't even talk to them." It's what Riley told me. He doesn't talk, but why is he talking to me? I stared at him while he was eating his lunch.
