Mephiles x reader: Potential
You are a (A/T)
They said they were trying to protect me....
"It wouldn't be long now. Not long at tall until her heart escaped it's titanium cage and was thrown into the thorns of the world. A perfect little heart to be messed with and taunted with.... not long till my game can begin."
As usual she walked the streets of the village market, all too aware of the eyes burning into the back of her head.
"Is that her?"
"Ugh, it's that thing."
"Why does she even stay here?"
Doing her best the (A/T) tried to brush off their words like dust, mostly accustomed to them now. The village she lived in was a very close community being a tiny place in the country, the next town being a good two hours drive away. You didn't find many villages like this in the modern day.
And yet despite none of the village folk not liking her, and seeing her as an 'it' rather than a 'she', she refused to leave. She was born in this village and should would die in this village, just like her parents did, leaving her to the harsh words of the gossips when they died three years ago.
But there was always one comment that struck her right in the chest.
"It's too powerful."
Yes she may be powerful, but she had ways of controlling her powers. She wasn't a threat and she tried her best to prove it.
Having had enough of all the death glares she started her walk home, after all she'd bought all the things she needed, even if she'd gotten the most oddly shaped potatoes, a cracked jar of honey and a loaf of bread already stale.
Her walk was silent with no one to share it with and so took longer, but she eventually reached her cabin at the edge of the woods. Her cabin was isolated and desolate, just like her.
So considerate of them to leave the worst stuff just for me (!), she thought putting the poor quality items away.
Evening crept killing the light of day, so when (Y/N) was occupying her time doing random chores to keep herself busy, she grew surprised at the amber light that she caught sight of in one of the distant crop fields. She didn't hesitate to dash towards the fire, she could put it out with her powers, even though she knew she'd be blamed for it.
As soon as she was close enough she used her ability to control all of the elements to create a water torrent that ended the flames in an instant, leaving a burned out field. She stood for a second catching her breath, glad the immense heat was gone.
"Impressive."
Snapping her gaze to behind her she was startled to see a black hedgehog with teal streaks behind her, but the thing that was most off putting wasn't the fact that he had no mouth, but the fact he'd gotten behind her so fast. Plus the fact that she knew he wasn't from the village.
"Who are you?" she asked straight away.
He drifted his gaze from the singed field up to her face making eye contact which made her physically shiver.
"I am Mephiles, Mephiles the Dark. And I am very interested in your powers which you just displayed." he said in a slow and deep voice, almost enticing.
"First of all I'm interested in why you started this fire, there's no tinder or matches so it must have been started by magic and I'm the only one who possesses magic in the village. And second of all what do you know about my powers?" she asked back.
He stared at her intently, almost as if he expected just as much from her. All of a sudden she felt the centre of this man's attention was a very bad place to be.
"What a clever (A/T) you are, and your powers, I know you have the ability to manipulate all the elements, them being wind, fire, earth, water, lightening and ice." he stated.
"So your a stalker as well as a fire starter." she snapped.
Rapidly she grew more nervous as to how he knew so much about her.
"I have been aware of your abilities for many years, however this setting and certain 'charms' greatly restrict your potential." he said, sparing a glance to the silver metallic bands tight on her wrists.
On instinct she clasped one wrist which she wore her inhibitor rings on, the only thing left by her parents and the only thing which allowed her to control her powers.
"You have much potential, yet you chose to limit yourself by staying here and wearing those inhibitors. I came here to offer you the chance to reach your full power." he offered.
"This is my home so I have no intention of leaving, and thanks to you thinking the only way to grab my attention was by lighting a fire in this crop field I'll be blamed for it." she rejected his offer spitefully.
Like she was going to leave everything she knew for a stranger.
"And there you have just contradicted yourself, why would you wish to stay somewhere where the people do not respect you for your power?" he argued.
"I don't care, I'll be staying here and continue to wear my inhibitors." she said stubbornly.
It was starting to annoy her how his voice was always at the same dull tone.
"Inhibitors given to you by scared parents, they too were afraid of your powers." he continued.
"No they weren't they were trying to protect me." she said back desperately.
"That is where you are wrong, they were simply trying to protect themselves from you."
She stared at the scorched ground, not knowing what to say. But she wouldn't stand for this man to just show up and think he can boss her about.
"Thank you for the offer, but I'm staying here and I'll use my powers in my own way. And I'd appreciate if you would stop stalking me." she stated strongly.
She then turned on her heel and went back to her cabin, constantly keeping a sixth sense the whole way back as to make sure he didn't follow her.
The next day she went into the village to tell the local council that it wasn't her who started the fire and that she would happily use her powers to help get the field liable for planting crops again. But she didn't even get to the council office.
The second she stepped into the market she was met with glares and shouting, stall owners left their shops, people passing by changed course to her direction and mothers held their children close. Soon a crowd had surrounded her.
"What do you think your doing setting our fields on fire!?"
"You've ruined the harvest for everyone!"
"You could have killed us all!"
"I-it wasn't me..." she said timidly over the screeching voices.
"Leave the village already!"
"You've always been a mistaken!"
"IT WASN'T ME!"
*KRRReEeKkK!*
A rumble from the clouds and a bolt of lightening fell from the heavens and crashed into one of the stalls, sending produce onto the ground and setting it all alight on fire.
She'd lost control again.
Without sparing a moment she stumbled to her feet and ran the fastest she ever had back home, the screams of the villagers ringing in her voice. Never ceasing.
But when she got back to her cabin, all ready to lock herself in there for the rest of her life, she found nothing but ashes of all her processions. The villagers had burned down her house the brief time she'd been in town. There was no magic here so she knew it wasn't him. And to think she'd been in town to offer her help. And this is what she got?
She fell to her knees and clutched a black heap of ash angrily in her hand and thoughts ran through her head. She never retaliated, never hurt them, never complained, always bit her tongue, always offered to help, always the 'good girl'. She was always hated no matter what she did.
"I told you that they couldn't respect your powers."
He was the last thing she needed right now.
Her face of diebelief turned into a scowl as she stood up her hand smoking as she further burnt the ashes in her hand, losing control again.
"You lost control in the village, I told you I can help you control your power." he continued.
Facing him all he got from her was a glare.
"Good for you, you were right. But I'm still not accepting your offer." she snapped.
Not wanting anything more to do with him she walked past him headed for the woods.
"Then allow me to offer an alternative to my previous offer." he interjected.
With nothing left to loose she stopped and spared him a glance to show she was listening.
"If you were to refuse to use your powers that would only be foolish, eventually too much energy would accumulate and you would be forced to release it in the form of a natural disaster. So I propose that you teach yourself on how to use your abilities, but if you feel as if you can't then I will teach you instead." he proposed.
"But then you'd have no guarantee of me coming back, and how much time would I have?" she asked, not bothered about anything anymore.
"I don't have any guarantee, and I am immortal so time is not an issue for me." he replied.
"Fine, I'll bugger off for a while to teach myself and I'll meet you back here if I feel like you can help me." she agreed.
And with those words she continued to walk into the forest and that was the last time she was seen for many years.
If (Y/N) thought that her cabin had been secluded, then compared to where she was now made it seem like the centre of a capitol city. She wandered far away from anyone and trained for hours, not stopping at all. Constantly afraid she'd hurt someone.
Only three daring times did she dare take off her inhibitor rings, which resulted in a chaotic natural disaster, every time.
But then the time came when she thought she was safe enough, in control of her powers. So she dared to leave the cave she had taken residence in, and set off for the village, where she hoped Mephiles would still be waiting. So that she could rub it in his face that she'd done it all herself, and that she wouldn't require his aid.
However as she got closer more and more things seemed unfamiliar, more buildings, less fields. She couldn't have been training herself for that long could she? For her it felt like a couple of days maybe even a week, yet she never felt hungry, thirsty or tired. Just the constant urge to improve.
But sadly nothing could have prepared her for what she saw when she eventually made it 'home', if that's what you could call it.
There were no fields, none of the cottages. Instead a crumpled up industrial estate spread along for as long as the eye could see. Broken concrete littering the land and nothing but grey cracking buildings.
"100 years later and you decided that you required my aid."
That voice was the only one she could recognise.
"100 years?" she asked breathlessly turning to face him.
"I believe that was when you accepted my offer. You have certainly been teaching yourself for a long time." he said standing at her side also looking out to the grim area.
"N-no, I was only away for a few days..."
"I take it that you were unaware that an aspect of your powers was that you are immortal like me."
As soon as Mephiles said those words a lot more made more sense to (Y/N). When she was younger her parents always told her that the only way she could die was if she stayed in the village because it too was 'magical'.
They said they were trying to protect her, and now she realised they were right. They'd been trying to protect her from living to see everything she had die.
So she looked out at the place she used to call home and realised she could never leave this world, and that Mephiles was the only one who she'd be able to spend eternity with.
"Seeming though there's nothing left for me why don't we just crush the whole world?" she said suddenly.
She looked at him with a sly smirk, he as usual held very little expression.
"I knew you came to me that night for my powers. So what the hell, let's rule this world." she smirked.
"It seems 100 years have allowed you to see things from my perspective." he said a pleased voice.
She unclasped her silver bands one at a time and hit the ground with a ringing *clink*. And from that moment the world was never the same.
Remember I'm always open to suggestions.
