Mephiles x reader: Why?

You are a (A/T)

It doesn't hurt to be kind.

The sea lapped back and fourth in a high tide night having already fallen. It was a beautiful sight, the beach at night. A sight which (Y/N) liked to enjoy. Walking along the beach not to close to the tide she took in the view of the moonlight sea, it would be a full moon tomorrow night.

It was her routine to often visit the beach knowing the rides like the back if her hand. But as she gazed off into the distance there was something in the sea she didn't recognise.

"What's that?"

She jogged over with curiously and slight panic. But the object itself wasn't a thing but rather a someone. A hedgehog heavily wounded clawed at the wet sand beneath him, the first instance of land he had come into contact with since he'd been plunged into the sea in his last battle.

Had he not struggled and attempted to swim he surely would have ended up at the bottom of the ocean never achieving the chance to heal. But now he had to keep moving in the hopes his enemies won't find him. At least he was no longer in the ocean.

"Are you alright!?"

Jolting at someone grabbing his arm attempting to lift him up Mephlise thrashed about weakly.

"Stop moving I'm trying to help you!" (Y/N) pleaded.

Had Mephikes been in full strength he wouldn't have hesitated to kill this girl who had seen him. But he was too heavily wounded, and without a chaos emerald he was belittled to the weakness of a mortal. And so he fell limp as the (A/T) dragged him away from the shore and onto dry sand.

Looking at the male hedgehog who had black fur and teal streaks, (Y/N) had never seen anyone like him before and was starting to panic about his many wounds.

"Right stay still and don't move. I'm going to call an ambulance!"

She hated to leave the hedgehog but she had accidentally left her phone at home, and so had to run to the bear by phone box at the edge of the road next to the beach. The ambulance thankfully came quickly and she accompanied the now uncurious hedgehog to the hospital.

Promptly being told he would easily survive and to leave given that visiting hours were over. She returned to the hospital the next day only to be told that the hedgehog had left. Without so much if a trace. She was worried about the stranger and wished she could have made sure he was okay, but it was as though he has dissolved into thin air.

"I didn't even get to ask what his name was."

- Several Weeks Later ~

Back and fourth, back and fourth, back and fourth, (Y/N) was watching the waves at night again. After she'd helped that hedgehog she came back every night, hopes of seeing him again and because she simply enjoyed the sight.

She would walk to and back across the beach always to be slightly disappointed, but it slowly grew less and less. She had no connection to that hedgehog so why should she look for him? Maybe it was best to just leave it.

And then she saw him. In the exact same spot he had been fighting for his life. Dashing over to him she stopped him having yet to see her exclaiming in delight.

"You're okay!"

Mephiles jumped into q battle stanc only to see it was that mortal who had aided him. His stance dropped

"Where did you go for so many weeks?" She asked straight away "you left the hospital by the time I went back to see if you were okay they said you'd left."

Mephiles hesitated, intentions of killing the girl slowly dissolving. There was a brief silence only filled in by the waves before he answered in a wrong strong voice.

"I required to replenish my chaos energy and could not stay where my enemies might find me."

"So you're on the run?"

"Of sorts."

"So why come back here?"

"I owe a debt."

There was a reason Mephiles hadn't killed this girl. And that was account of the fact that this mortal was the reason he was still alive. Which meant he owed a debt.

It was pathetic for him to be saved by a mortal, a fleeting life compared to his immortality. Therefore he was now in the position where he had to return the favour to the mortal in some way so that this whole embarrassing affair could be over with and that this mortal would stop looking for him.

He had seen her return to the beach countless times, a place he also returned to as well due to it being unknown to his enemies, and assumed she wanted a favour in return for her aid. As that was the general behaviour of mortals, complete King tasks in expectancy of a reward.

However despite Mephiles believing he made it clear that he owed (Y/N) a debt, she couldn't be all the more clueless. And she kept returning every night and he would always be there.

He was always there at night so she just assumed he liked the night bay view as mush as she did. When in reality night was the best time for him to appear, given the fact his figure was hard to view in darkness.

But as she came back every night it would be her job to fill in the silence. And she would do so by talking of current affairs, and very often she would talk of Sonic and his teammates. Given that they were practically celebrities.

And in doing this she regularly told Mephiles the whereabouts of his enemies, making it in his eyes that his debt was only increasing. But (Y/N) was enjoying herself with these visits as the weeks stretched out into several months.

But all good things have to end.

~ a random day ~

(Y\N) walked down the market near the beach eyeing up certain foods available. Only daring to glance at various fruits and cakes, considering whether or not to buy one for the hedgehog down at the beach. As over the weeks she had taken him various foods in case he was hungry, but he always refused her offers.

However her browsing was interrupted when she heard what sounded like an explosion towards the beach. With a brisk walk she soon found the road to the beach was blocked off by barriers and police men. She joined the crowd of on lookers who couldn't see what we going on.

"I hear it's the Sonic gang." One girl said.

"Yeah and they're fighting some blackish greyish hedgehog."

Hedgehog!? Panicking for her friend at the beach she tried to jump the barrier. Even though it was day there was still a chance he could be there and she didn't want him to get hurt.

"I can't let through miss!" A police man blocked her way.

But she was ignorant to his words she jumped over the barrier dodging the policeman and bolting down the road towards the beach. She could easily run over sand racing the tide so concrete was child's play for her as she out ran the policeman.

Making it to the edge of the beach she stopped for a second catching her breath holding onto the railing, growing fearful at the sight in front of her. The heroes she adored so much battling her friend.

"You've got no where else to run Mephiles!" Sonic declared.

After months of searching he, Tails, Knuckles and Amy had finally located him. And had called in team dark to finally finish the villain off. But he had been hidden for so long that his powers were back to their original levels, which would make it all the more harder to defeat.

"Then I suppose I have no other option but to defeat you all here!" Mephiles through a large attack.

Among all the sand and water being blown every where, attacks and blows being exchanged (Y/N) was able to find a clearing and just as Sonic was about to spin dash Mephiles a figure blocked his way.

"Stop! Don't hurt him!"

"What are you doing!? Get out of the way!" Sonic called having to hastily prevent his attack, worried for the civilian.

"No! I wont let you hurt him!" (Y/N) shook her head arms out stretched in a blocking stance.

But she had to duck when Shadow threw a chaos spear, it grazing her arm. They started attacking him and she was pushed to the side.

"Leave him alone! He's a good man!" she pulled on Shadow's arm.

"You don't know anything about him! Mephiles is a villain and a murderer!" he shoved her away.

She gave a small yelp as she fell onto the ground her arm stinging from that chaos spear. And this stranger was right. She didn't know anything about him. She had been talking endlessly to one man for months now never having learnt he name, or he hers. And now she had only learnt it from the mouth of a stranger. Clutching her fist in the sand she felt as though she had been so foolish.

It was then she saw everyone launching a bigger attack than before all together. It would kill him! Her body acted before her mind and she once again ran over to him only for everything to be lost in a bright white light of the attack. When the light vanished Sonic and the others had expected to see Mephiles defeated, but all there was was the singed ground. Looking at the now empty space Sonic spoke the question they all wanted to answer.

"Where did they go?"

************************************

Mephiles was fully aware that he had never committed a good act in his existence. He manipulated others, had others do the work for him, killed mercilessly and never once thought of the consequences. So why? Why was this mortal crying over him?

"Mephiles are you okay!?"

He had been able to teleport halfway through the attack to a safe enough distance away and he had accidentally teleported (Y/N) too, given the fact she was so close to him. They were now on the other edge of the beach sheltered by the rocks of a cliff.

But his efforts were wasted as he wasn't long for this world. The attack had damaged his physical form too much, large and deep cuts on his body, a limb missing and blood leaking out of him too rapidly. And without an emerald, he couldn't acquire the energy he needed to revive himself.

"Oh Chaos... Your wounds are so bad, I-I don't know if I can get an ambulance in time. I've I've got a small med kit but it w-wont be enough!" (Y/N) stuttered trying to remain calm as possible, but tears were still leaking from her eyes.

"Silence mortal."

(Y/N) jumped at his voice, since the last time she had heard it was that second night he was on the beach.

"You believe that a creature such as myself could die so easily? My physical form may be damaged but my mind will survive in the white zone. In which I will reclaim my power and return centuries later when my enemies and thankfully you will be dead."

Stunned at his words (Y/N) felt a spark of anger erupting from her chest. She had saved him that night, and he hadn't even said thank you, she had come back countless nights to act as company, trying her best to help him. She even stood against the heroes of Mobius for him.

And this was the thanks she got.

"Fine! You can go ahead and die! It's not like I worried about you every time I left the beach scared you'd be swept away by the tide! It's not like you're the reason I carry around a small med kit in case you were ever hurt again! It's not like I ever wondered if you were in trouble or homeless! It's not like I ever thought you might talk to me eventually. Its! It's not like-

But (Y/N) stopped as she saw that Mephiles was no longer listening to her. His expression gone cold along with the rest of what was left of his body slowly. His pupils clouded and blood gone from his body. He had died right in front of her and she hadn't even noticed.

At the realization he was gone she felt the tears spring to her eyes all a new. But as she wept she couldn't make sense as to why she was crying over the loss of someone who was seen as a villain by all.

However from that day things were never the same for (Y/N).

Feeling it as the proper thing to do she had buried Mephiles' body on the beach out of the way of anyone who might accidentally dig him up, but she made sure it was close to the spot she had talked to him every night. Wondering whys she why she went to such efforts for someone who she had barely known, and who she knew was actually alive.

But soon after returning home she was shunned by everyone, for believing that a enemy of Sonic was a good man, for standing against the heroes, she was seen as a traitor. Even her sanctuary of the beach was taken from her, as the townsfolk were fully aware that that was her very special place.

Eventually it got harder and harder for her to stay in the place she had called home all her life, when everyone there hated her.

There was nothing left for now. At least, there was nothing left for in this world.

********************************

It was quiet. But that was how it always was in the white zone. A place out of time that was used to hold threats that couldn't be contained on Mobius. That is what Sonic and his friends attack had been, an attack that sent him to this desolate place.

But unknown to them this place had chaos energy lingering throughout it on account of Sonic turning super in this very zone. And so Mephiles was slowly regaining his power and would soon be able to break free from this prison, but he would wait until his enemies had passed.

And so all that was left to do was wait in the white zone. But the one issue that was making him question his sanity was that it was always silent. Something he wasn't accustom to. Even when trapped in the scepter of darkness, locked away in a vault he would hear various voices, the clanging of machinery. Even when he was in Silver's torn future set ablaze by Iblis there was the constant crackling of fire, toppling of buildings and screams of survivors.

Even when he was on his own her very often had a Chaos Emerald with him would would provide some sound, and when surrounded by nature he would listen to the various sounds. And when he had been at the beach there had been the constant rushing of the sea. And her voice.

Left with his own thoughts for so long he had figured that the only thing that had truly irritated him about that (A/T) was the fact that she never gave him the chance to repay if debt. A simple issue he had wanted to be rid of quickly. To say he enjoyed her voice and needless talking would be too far, and yet he hadn't found it irritating.

It was interesting more than anything, to have someone talk to him as a person rather than a soulless creature.

But his long thoughts were suddenly halted when a sound broke the silence. He recognized that sound as a portal, and sure enough the swirls of purple and turquoise exploded not to far from him. And a figure ran through!

They landed on on the ground crouching to the ground. Mephiles was prepared for a fight, but it took him a second to recognize the figure.

"Made it..." she mumbled to herself.

Standing up she looked at Mephiles who hadn't changed at all, his expression in different. But (Y/N) herself had changed drastically. Her clothes were torn and singed, her skin purple in patches with bruises and her hair longer indicating a large amount of time had passed. But what was the most obvious change was her posture.

She had once stood so happy and full of energy, now her eyes were dull and lifeless.

"I know I look rough..." she said in a dull tone "But this is what two years of effort looks like."

She had been the last person Mephiles had been expecting to follow him into the white zone. But rather than anger, annoyance or joy, he seemed to be feeling a void in between these emotions at the sight of her.

"What are you doing here mortal?"

"First off my names (Y/N), thanks for asking. And second of all I spent the last two years trying to reach this zone so I could tell you how you fucked up my life."

Mephiles wondered as to why a mortal, so weak as herself, would put her body through such strain to travel across the dimensions. It was obvious going through that portal had taken its strain on her, and it most likely effected the effect time would have on her, causing her to age slowly if not not at all.

He had been never before, but he was impressed.

"After you left I was seen by a traitor by all, and so I left my life behind and searched for a way to get to this white zone you told me about. Although I'm disappointed, as I was hoping there would be something I could quickly end my journey with in this zone, but now that I'm here, guess my life's over and I'm just breathing."

(Y/N) had worked hard over the last two years. After leaving her home town, the rest of the world being alien to her, she was seen as a traitor by all and had to make do as best as she could. But she quickly realized there was no where she could ever belong again, and so saught out a way to reach Mephiles and join him in the white zone.

Anywhere had to be better than the hell she was now living in. She went to all soughts of extreme efforts from teaming up with Eggman and stealing his technology, stealing a shard of the master emerald at one point and also stealing a chaos emerald and teaching herself to use chaos control.

Finally she got her chance to reach the white zone when the Sonic gang intervened when she was attempting chaos control, a portal opened to the white zone. The blue hero had tried to hold her back saying she'd die there, but she had merely slapped away his hand and ran right through.

And here she was.

But her voice, Mephiles didn't like it. It wasn't as intriguing to listen to, her volume didn't increase and decrease, you wouldn't tell what her emotions were by the pitch or tone of her voice anymore. It was a dead voice in the same constant tone.

And in that moment he realized he had finally been presented with the chance to repay his debt. To return the same efforts she had extended to him, in the hopes that he could one day, restore that voice he now missed.
