Sonic x reader: On Your Left

You are a (A/T)

Some say true heroes wear dog tags.

A cool breeze was in the air along with the dew on the grass as the sun started to rise, creating a canvas of oranges, purples and pinks. But a (F/C) (A/T) didn't have time to enjoy the view as she was engaged in her morning run, wearing her usual running jacket and shorts.

Breath in the nose for two steps and out the mouth for two steps.

She concentrated on the sound of her steps, the cracks on the pavement, as long as she wasn't concentrating on the burn in her legs.

However as she concentrated on the ground still running a sudden strong gust of wind passed her, she stumbled for a couple of steps before carrying on, not thinking much about it. But then about one minute later she felt the same gust of wind except this time she swore she could have heard the words:

"On your left!"

Interested and a little annoyed now she carried on running to see what this gust of wind was, the third time it passed her she saw it was a blue blur streak, and whoever it was they once again said:

"On your left!"

Determined now she ran even faster and kept her ears sharp. And then from behind she heard the blur approaching.

"Not this time." she said to herself.

As fast as she could, finding a reasonable sized stone, she kicked into the path of the blur. Just as planned whoever it was tripped on it spectacularly. Their face colliding with the floor. She gave a smirk knowing she'd caught this 'on your left!' Mobian. But now she could see that the Mobian was in fact a blue hedgehog.

"Ugh.... guess I deserved that." he semi chuckled getting up.

Standing up he brushed off the dirt in his fur. The (A/T) could now see that he had green eyes as he looked back at her with a sheepish grin.

"On your right." she smirked at the hedgehog.

He gave a small laugh at that, whilst the (A/T) was still panting a little.

"I didn't mean any offence." he quickly defended himself.

"And I didn't mean any offence tripping you up, although it was the only way to get you to stop and it was rather funny watching you fall over." she snickered.

"Oh is that how it is?" he asked.

"Yeah that's how it is." she played along.

They both gave a small laugh at each other again.

"By the way I'm Sonic the Hedgehog." the blue boy introduced himself.

He held out a hand for a friendly hand shake.

"And I'm (Y/N) the (A/T)." she said taking her turn.

However she surprised him when she shook his right hand awkwardly with her left hand. She smiled at his confusion.

"Sorry I find it hard to shake hands properly as I don't actually have a right arm." she explained.

Always finding humour in peoples confusion of this one particular trait.

"What do you mean?" he asked, more confused than ever.

Chuckling she rolled up the long sleeve of her running jacket to reveal a prosthetic limb, starting just under her shoulder giving her a plastic arm. She waited for him to call it weird or think of her as 'gross' but instead....

"Hey that's rather cool! How did you get it? I-if you don't mind me asking!" he suddenly asked.

"No it's aright! In fact I love it when people see my prosthetic limb as a part of me rather than a piece of plastic." she replied happily.

In all honesty she was just glad that he found her limb interesting.

"I'm an ex RAF pilot, I was in a risky surveillance mission, my plane got hit and I crashed and my arm didn't make it. Still I'm here and that's all I care about." she shrugged, never regretting her choice of going on that mission.

"The RAF, that's the Royal Air Force isn't it? Aren't they a bit like GUN?" Sonic asked.

"Yep, and I guess we are, except we obviously deal with all air crafts, you know supplying medical aid and air tactics." She said.

"So were you out here running to keep up with training?"

"Well as I'm no longer a pilot I guess it's not training, I do it more to keep my health and stamina at the same level. Things like the RAF leave you with good habits."

"I guess they do seeming though you were running fairly fast for a good while." He said.

She gave him a look as if to ask if he was mocking her.

"I'm serious, there's only a few people who can see me running past and actually stop me." He tried to reassure her.

"I'll take that as a compliment then." She breathy chuckled.

After that it would have been rather foolish for the two not to stay in contact, seeming as though they got along so well with each other. But any contact they had with each other was mainly during (Y/N)'s morning runs.

A sort of competition started where Sonic would see how many times he could run past her, always calling out 'on your left!', before she was able to trip him up. Turns out the RAF also taught you many ways to trip people up, as (Y/N) never failed to take him by surprise.

Whether it be something extreme like putting some oil on his path or kicking a pile of leaves in his face, she'd find a way.

"Just how many tricks do you have for tripping me up!?" Sonic asked, having just been caught out by a stone again.

"More than you could imagine." she smirked helping him up.

And she'd never let him know she had several traps set up along her usual running route.

They would have carried on with a full conversation had (Y/N) not felt a drop of water land on her cheek. Looking up to the sky's the clouds had become very grey very suddenly.

"It looks like it's going to tip it down." Sonic observed.

"Come on my place is just around the corner, besides it'll be nice to see you walk for more than two paces." she teased.

"Hey!"

It certainly would have been nice, and appreciated by (Y/N)'s aching legs, if they could just walk around the corner but the whether had other plans, letting the clouds burst and soak the pair in the short distance they had left.

So the two legged it to (Y/N)'s place, a simple house, reasonably modern. Unlocking the door the two hurried inside. Looking around Sonic saw it was a very clean and well kept place, but (Y/N) had always struck him as someone who preferred order.

But his observations were halted when a towel was thrown on his head.

"Dry up I don't want you catching a cold." he heard (Y/N) say from underneath the towel.

"Heh thanks!" he replied.

However his quills got caught on the fabric and not wanting to rip it with his spiky hairdo asked for some assistance.

"Hey (Y/N) could you give me a hand?" he asked.

*CLATTER*

Being able to just see the floor from underneath the endless yards of towel he saw (Y/N)'s prosthetic limb on the floor at his feet.

"You have no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to ask me that!" (Y/N) laughed gleefully.

Finally getting the towel off his head he saw (Y/N) holding her stomach laughing. A laugh that invited others to join in, so he did, and the two laughed until their stomachs hurt.

"Let me guess, you got that from 'Toy Story'?" Sonic asked still catching his breath.

"How did you ever know (?)" she asked.

(Y/N) then picked up her arm, but this was the first time Sonic had seen her without it. It was true, she no longer had a right arm only a short length of it. And (Y/N) caught Sonic glancing at her stubble of an arm.

"Sorry, I know it looks weird." she apologised quickly putting her arm back on, securing the straps.

"Well it's going to look weird to me because I've never seen it before but it doesn't mean your weird." he reassured her.

She looked up at him in surprise, and turned her head away as to hide her blush.

"Thank you Sonic." she said gratefully.

"C-can I ask how long ago it was when you lost your arm?" he asked hesitantly.

"A year ago next week." she said happily enough, her blush thankfully gone.

"And uhhh... do you miss it? Having your arm?"

"Course I do, but I've just got on with it, you know if life hands you lemons." she shrugged.

And it seemed that the whether had handed them lemons that day as it rained for the rest of the day, a perfect excuse to watch constant movies and have endless conversations.

As it turns out after that they found other times to meet up with each other apart from the morning runs. Gradually (Y/N) become known among the gang and at the same time she became more known to Sonic's heart.

It took the brave pilot and the speedy hedgie time to both gather the courage to confess how they felt towards on another.

Now skip ahead two years and you'll find they had been happily together as boyfriend and girlfriend, already living together. But Sonic had the tendency to be a little impulsive at times.

"Hey (Y/N) I need you to come with me!" he yelled running into their house.

"What's the matter Sonic?" (Y/N) asked surprised at his sudden entrance.

"I need you to close your eyes and come with me." he said his tail wagging.

"Why?"

"Will you just do it?" he asked still excited.

With a sigh she did as she was asked and gasped a little in surprise when he picked her up and began to run. It was a quick journey meaning it was near by, he carefully put her down.

"Where are we?" she asked impatiently.

But she could hear Sonic rustling what sounded like paper.

"We're at Tails' workshop." he said simply.

"Why?"

"Because I had it delivered here so you wouldn't see it."

"Had what delivered?"

But his answer was taking her hand and leading her forward.

"This." he said.

Taking that as her cue she opened her eyes and gasped at what she saw. There on the desk was a cardboard box filled with white tissue paper, and inside was an arm prosthetic limb. But not a standardized one.

Take your pick:

"S-Sonic what is this?" she asked agape.

"Well I thought you of all people would know." he chuckled.

"But where did you get it?" she questioned, running her hand over the intricate decoration.

"I had to get it specially made, but you lost your arm three years ago today so I thought you were due an upgrade." he smiled.

But (Y/N) couldn't stop looking at it and the excitement and bewilderment was clear on her face for Sonic to see, he could tell he'd done a good job.

"Do you wanna to try it on?" he asked her.

Snapping out of her thoughts she nodded like an eager child. Sonic had helped (Y/N) put on her arm countless times already so this time was no different. And when it was strapped on (Y/N) gave a small laugh.

"What?" he enquired.

"On your right."

This one goes out to all the armed forces protecting all countries, both men and women.
