Chapter 7

Sparrowflight was awoken by his Clanmates. There was a lot of talking in the center of camp. Sparrowflight was still a bit drowsy, but he recognized the hushed voices of Blazefire, Hawkstar, and Antfoot. There were cats standing in a circle, surrounding something. What was going on?

Sparrowflight stood up and slowly padded towards the center of camp. Batfeather was the first one to notice him. Soon Mudpool, Dustbreeze, and Antfoot were also staring at him.

"Let him through!" Batfeather's voice rang out. Despite being just made a warrior, the cats seemed to form a path in silent agreement with his litter mate. "I'm sorry." Sparrowflight turned to see Mudpool looking at him, then turning her head to the thing they were surrounding.

Sparrowflight gasped. It was laying there, limp. Dried blood staining the cats neck and chest fur, it's eyes shut. It was Stormheart.

Sparrowflight opened his mouth, but didn't say anything. He slowly padded over to the body of his former mentor. He could feel the gaze of his Clanmates burning into his pelt, as if they expected him to do something. He didn't.

Sparrowflight stayed silent, standing over his former mentor's body, staring in disbelief. Sparrowflight opened his mouth and his voice came out as just a whisper "How did this happen?" He asked, turning to the cats.

Antfoot stepped forward "Blazefire came back to camp with his body while you were asleep." Sparrowflight turned his gaze to Blazefire, who was staring at his paws avoiding eye contact.

"He says it was by the Thunderclan border. He found him bleeding. Heathersong says the wounds clearly came from a cat." Antfoot explained.

Hawkstar then stepped forward "I will call a meeting later today. We will decide what must be done." The leader stated, turning and walking to his den.

The cats soon all seemed to go there separate ways, all having already paid their respects. Soon, the only cats left were Sparrowflight, Batfeather, and Dustbreeze. Sparrowflight was lost in thought until he felt Batfeather's pelt brush against his. "I'm so sorry." She whispered. "I know you two weren't that close but...." she broke off, looking away.

Dustbreeze stepped forward. "I...I know that this is the first time seeing death for both of you." She began "I know how sad it makes you feel." She then looked down, as if she was choking on her words. "It...it reminds me of your father."

Sparrowflight gasped, seeing how sad his mother was. She had never spoke of their father before. "He....he died from a dog attack before you were born. His name was Crowwing." Dustbreeze sniffed and looked at Batfeather as if all the memories were flooding back. "You look just like him." She said, cracking a weak smile. Batfeather looked just as shocked by this information as Sparrowflight.

"You're telling us this now?" Sparrowflight asked sharply. Dustbreeze looked at her son, pools of sadness in her eyes

"I.."

"You know how hard it is, seeing all the other kits with fathers?"

"I thought if I loved you enough then it wouldn't bother you." Dustbreeze whispered.
"Well you didn't!" Sparrowflight hissed, turning and bolting out of camp.

He had to get away. Away from everyone.

"He's grieving, he doesn't know what he's saying." He heard Batfeather murmur to Dustbreeze.

Sparrowflight kept running, not knowing or caring where he was going. Sparrowflight eventually found himself off the moor and he realized that his paws had carried him to Fourtrees.
He looked around at the oaks and sighed. He then saw a flash of white fur before his eyes. Sparrowflight gasped in shock and looked around. He turned around to see a familiar face.

"Blisspaw?" Sparrowflight asked, tilting his head questioningly. "Blissnose." She corrected, chuckling lightly. Sparrowflight smiled. He liked her laugh. "Do you remember me?" He asked. Blissnose nodded "You're Sparrowpaw." Sparrowflight nodded "Sparrowflight." He corrected.

"What are you doing here?" He asked. Blissnose shrugged. "Rainingstar is our new leader, and her deputy, Silverfur, is really bossy. I needed to be alone. Why are you here?" She asked.

Sparrowflight looked down at his paws "My mentor died." He murmured. Blissnose's eyes showed concern "I'm sorry." She murmured "Are you okay?" She asked. "Not really." Sparrowflight muttered. "Do you want to talk about it?" Blissnose asked.

Sparrowflight looked at her in surprise "We're from different Clans." He stated "And we're not even supposed to be here!" Blissnose ducked her head with a teasing glint in her eyes "Not scared to break the rules are you?" She asked, batting her eyes at him. Sparrowflight felt his neck fur bristle.

"I'm not scared!" Blissnose smiled. "Well if you're not scared of doing it once, maybe we could try it again?" She suggested. Sparrowflight tilted his head. "You mean, coming here?" He asked. Blissnose narrowed her eyes playfully "Of course mouse brain! Can you take a hint?"

Sparrowflight was taken aback by her comment. "W-Well I guess I could." He murmured. Blissnose smiled "Then I'll see you here tomorrow night." She said, turning and padding away. Sparrowflight found himself staring at her as she walked away, mesmerized by her beautiful white fur. He smiled and turned to walk back to Windclan, feeling better.

When Sparrowflight walked back into camp he found everyone gathered in the center again. He realized that he must have just missed the meeting.

Blazefire was the first to notice him "We're attacking Thunderclan tomorrow!" He told him excitedly. Mudpool looked more worried "Hawkstar says to be ready by dawn." She informed him. Sparrowflight nodded in thanks and padded to the fresh kill pile.

He sighed and picked up a small rabbit. He saw Batfeather and Dustbreeze eating together and wanted to join them, but instead walked over to Antfoot and Hareleap. "Mind if I join you guys?" He asked. Hareleap nodded "We were just discussing battle plans for tomorrow."

Sparrowflight laid down and began eating, while listening. "We'll break into two groups." Antfoot explained, drawing lines in the sand. "I can join your group." Sparrowflight offered. Antfoot looked at him questioningly "Are you sure? I want the best fighters with me to go out first." Sparrowflight nodded "I won't let you down."

Antfoot smiled "Your young. But you have courage and leadership. That's good."

Sparrowflight smiled at the deputy's praise, but found eyes glaring at him. He turned to see Blazefire. Was he jealous? Sparrowflight wondered to himself, and continued to eat with the senior warriors.
