The wind blew my scarf, and I bit my lip as the temperature dropped. The bare trees swayed in the wind, and the snow blew across the sidewalk in small flakes. The sidewalk and road had frozen ice spots making them slippery. A rabbit scampered across the snow side us, it's white pelt blending into it's surroundings. I point at it and Zeke smiles, as we watch it run out of view. Beside me, Zeke rubbed his hands, together, his cheeks and nose red. He looked over at me and offered a slight smile.

"We should have taken the bus." He says. I nod, and tuck my hands into my insulated pockets. We stop at the street, cars whizzing past as Zeke pressed the button, and the light at the other end began to blink green. We crossed, and Zeke started to talk.

-:-:-

I hadn't seen it coming. I didn't know. All I saw was a car screech on the ice, and I ran to the sidewalk. I thought he had followed me. The driver screamed and called someone. I assumed it was 911. I was crying, in fact, I still am. Right now, I'm sitting in the office, supposed to be in block 2, ELA. My knees were tucked into my chest, and I bit my lip. I forced the tears back. The young secretary, handed me a box of tissues, and offered an it'll be okay. I nodded, and accepted the tissues. She had lied. She didn't know it was gonna be okay. I don't even know if she knows who Zeke is.

I wait for another 15 minutes before my Mother came to get me, with Em. Em pulled me close to her as we left. It's another 30 minutes before we get to the hospital. Mom goes to the front desk of this sector, asking when we'll be able to see Zeke. He says not for another 5 hours, or more. We nod and head to the cafeteria here. We sit in silence for a while, and Mom goes up to get some snacks. I just wanna go home. I hate the smell of hand sanitizer and medicine.

After an hour, we walk around the little shops on that street. It at least took my mind off things, but my hands still shook. My phone buzzed, and I looked at it, as I pulled it out of my pocket.

Fawn? Where are you? Are you sick? It's art right now, and Zeke isn't here either, do you know where he is?

It's Mari. How am I supposed to tell her that her boyfriend is in the hospital and I'm shopping, and that he was run over? I hesitate, and Em looks over my shoulder and mutters an oh no. I type, Well, I'm on Foxwealth street with Em..

What? Why?

We are waiting for something.

Waiting for what? Is Zeke with you?

Well, we are waiting for Zeke, kinda.

What?

It's a long story.

Art class is fairly long.

I sigh, Mari was always so stubborn.

Phone me, and Em will tell you.

I'm in CLASS.

Well, is the teacher there? // Our art teacher was hardly there, I always assumed she was in the teachers lounge, and we were prett well behaved kids.

Oh, no. I'll call. // I hand the phone to Emma, and she nods and answers. She tells the whole story, or what she got from me, anyway. From knowing Mari since we were 11, I'm sure she's sitting stiffly, hoping to hold it together. Em hands back the phone, her eyebrows furrowed in concern. We soon decide to walk back, and the cold prickles my skin. Em puts her hand on my shoulder, and pulls me close. The sidewalks are icy, and the streets slick, as we walk towards the large building. Emma grabs my hand when we walk through the automatic doors. I watch young couple pass through with a newborn craddled in the woman's arm. I small boy with a cast around his wrist passes through, holding his Father's hand with his non-broken one. My mother goes up to the man yet again, and he says that he had woken up, and that we will be able to see him in about 10 minutes. We sit down on the waiting room chairs watching the minutes tick down on the clock.

Soon, the man comes up to us and nods, telling us to go to room 383. We all shuffle towards the room, and knock on the door. A man with blonde hair and a small beard comes out, along with a lady, who had light brown hair. Zeke's parents. They both had tears in their eyes, and I became more nervous about what I was going to find in that room. A doctor walked up to us, locking the view of the room, and welcomed us, and introduced himself. My mom introduced us and the doctor told us about Zeke's injures. A broken right arm and fractured left knee. A mild concussion and a large cut along his left arm. I shudder as he pulls out of the way. I wish I hadn't seen what I saw that day, in that room.
