Chapter 41

For the longest while it was all completely blank. There was no sound and no light aside from Panacea's suit that was gradually failing. The two figures limp underneath the rubble. But surely enough, slowly but surely rumbling could be heard from above.

The Avengers along with fire and rescue services were working rapidly at the surface to get the two kids out of there safely, Tony yelling orders out like blue bloody murder, eyes constantly on hear trackers desperate to save the two before it was too late.

Finally Bucky with the strength of his metal arm was able to pull away one large piece of concrete, calling go to the others.

"I've found them!"

At the release of pressure Panacea's wings folded away.  Iron man would have been down there in an instant but the opening was too small, leading Redwing to hover down.

"No spinal damage to either, Spiderman looks fine but Panacea's in a bad way."

"We'll get them up here!" Tony called through the coms panicked.

It was a tricky task big eventually both Spiderman and Panacea were out of the rubble, finally safe.

*****************

Peter could hear beeping. Panicking his eyes shot open remembering the bomb, sitting bolt right up only to quickly realize he was in a hospital room and the beeping that had gone from slow to rapid had been his own heartbeat.

Breathing in deeply the beeping gradually slowed down, Peter trying to recall what had happened. In fact he was having trouble remembering anything that had happened yesterday, his head cloudy rather than sore. In fact he felt perfectly fine, which isn't how he'd expect to feel when waking up in a hospital room.

It was also a fancy room, very clean and all the machines looking very high tech. His wonder was answered when the door opened and Tony came hurriedly into the room. Glasses held in hand he was panting ever so slightly, obviously having run over to the room the minute he'd been told by Friday Peter's heart rate had quickened.

Giving a sigh Tony tried to seem composed, going to put on his glasses but shoving them in his pocket when he knew Peter had seen the dark bags under his eyes were plainly visible, his eyes slightly red suggesting he was very sleep deprived or that he had been crying. It would be a fair guess to say both were the cause.

"God this things annoying." Tony grumbled switching off the heart monitor.

Now that he was awake Tony didn't need a constant beeping to be reassured Peter's heart was still beating. Taking a seat next to the bed Tony gave another tired sigh running his hands over his face.

"What happened? Where am I?" Peter asked straight away knowing there was some sort of story behind this.

"Easy there, you're at the Avengers facility and as for the rest I'll tell you soon enough. How are you?"

"I feel fine, although my chest is a tiny but sore, like a cat scratched me."

"Good, good, what do you remember?"

Thinking hard Peter could remember a fight going on and a bomb, not much before.

"I remember The Scorpion trying to stop the bomb from going off, and... no, that's it."

And then the panic sparked inside him.

"What about (Y/N)!? Is she okay!? And what about-

"Hang on kid, Peter calm down, I'll fill you in with all the details okay? And then I'll let you panic, if there's anything to panic about. Agreed?"

Peter nodded. Tony then explained how the Goblin and Scorpion had planned to blow up the Avengers tower, placing bombs across the city to distract all the Avengers, and the how there was a fight at the Avengers tower.

Peter took it all in calmly, having to trust Tony that what he was saying was what happened.

"The Scorpion is a guy named Mac Gargan. And Gargan was one of the weapons dealers you got arrested of the FBI on the ferry back with the whole Vulture deal. Goblin busted him out of prison saying he'd let him get a shot at you in revenge for getting him arrested."

That finally made sense to Peter, as to where the Scorpion had come from and why he had hated Spider-man so much.

"And the Goblin who was he? Did you find that out or did he get away?"

Tony hesitated before answering but was cut off as Peter gave a sharp gasp as he remembered, it all coming flooding back in a tsunami, too powerful to fight all at once as all the pain and anguish came back.

"Oh God...." Peter's voice cracked "Mr Osborne.... Norman..."

Tony looked as though he had wished Peter had forgotten as he broke down into tears remembering what had happened. Gargan throwing himself over the bomb being killed where he stood, Norman being impaled by his glider, his dying wish that Harry never find out. And (Y/N).

"What about (Y/N)!? She healed me! Is she okay!?"

He could vaguely remember her voice as he felt a large pain in his chest, the rest of his body numb and it being dark, so very dark and a minuscule place.

"She's alive and fine." Tony said calmly, placing his hands on Peter's shoulders "Dr Cho was able to fix her up pretty good."

"B-but!"

"Listen, I know it hurts, believe me, I know. But May is worried about you, very worried about you, and you need her right now. We told her that the Goblin took you and (Y/N) as civilian hostages and that Norman who was the new owner of the tower was there at the time and killed by the Goblin before the Scorpion set of the bomb, if you tell her the truth is up to you, but trust me you need her right now Peter."

Still sobbing, hands on head, rocking back and fourth, Peter didn't know if he could handle it all. Gargan being another villain who was his fault who gave his life to try and right his wrong, killing Norman, only knowing (Y/N) was alive but in what state? And now he had to lie to May yet again.

"Peter!?"

High heeled shoes could be heard running towards the room, May ran into the room in a blind panic having just been phone called by Pepper that Peter had woken up. But she was prepared for the state Peter was in, knowing fully well what he had gone through.

Her heart ached at the sight of her nephew, her son, so distraught at something that had in no way been his fault. Tony gave a May's shoulder a quick pat as he walked past her towards the door.

"He needs you right now."

"I know." she nodded "Thank you for looking after him."

As soon as Tony left May was at Peter's side in an instant locking him in her arms, a comfort that only made him sob all the more harder.

"Oh you had me so worried sweetie, you were out for three days. I'm so glad you're okay."

Struggling to form any words, stuttering and mumbling Peter could only scold himself.

"I should should have done something!"

If he had only been faster, stronger, there must have been some way he could have prevented Norman's death. Every time he thought of a way Norman could still be alive Peter was always in his mind brought back to the night when he deleted the blue prints, the one act that had started this all.

And here he was, hardly harmed physically, the ones he loved and cared about still being alive and here with him, feeling as thought he pain and guilt of his heart he was feeling was what he deserved.

"Don't you dare say that Peter Parker. I keep telling you, you're only 16, you've got to stop trying to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders."

"But Mr Osborne is gone, a-and Harry-

"The only one at fault is the Goblin."

And in saying this May was correct, it was the Goblin's fault. For only the passed Norman, who was hardly aware himself until the end, knew that he and the Goblin were two different beings. Norman's mind had been in such a rage that when he had enhanced his abilities with a prototype formula, the Goblin had taken form in his mind.

Slowly taking over day by day, making him more risky, making him hold less regard for the value of human life, making him care for his son less and less. To the point Norman's mind and thoughts had been all but pushed into the darkest parts of the mind out of reach, only to resurface at death.

One day Peter would come to understand this, that the Goblin had killed Norman, not Spider-man, and take comfort in the fact that the Goblin had died before Norman. But that day was far away. And for the moment Peter would have to deal with the wrongly placed upon himself.

Hugging May hard she had always been the closest thing he had had to a mother, and now all he wanted was her, wishing he could return to the times when life was simple.

***************************

"Where am I? What happened?"

"You're at the Avengers facility

********

Elsewhere at the facility plenty of others were carrying on with various tasks and chores. And the world was being told the news that the Goblin and Scorpion had passed, and their dying crimes had been prevented. They would believe the lie that the Goblin had taken two high school students hostage to bargain with the Avengers, and that Norman Osborn had been at the wrong place at the wrong time in the tower which was now his.

But of course there were those who knew the truth. Panacea, (Y/N), being one. The fight at the tower had taken its toll on her, coming by out of it with cracked ribs, bruised bones and a broken nose. But she'd survived.

And now, being in the Avengers facility for the third time, she couldn't help but feel like a child, sat in a wheelchair in front of the large glass windows watching countless hover crafts and jets taking off or flying back. It was now her fourth day at the recovery medical centre at the facility, and still hadn't been able to see it all even with the various Avengers helping her escape her hospital room every so often.

"He's awake."

Snapping her head round she saw Tony walking up to her side.

"Really!? Can I go see him!?"

"I'd give it a bit, he's with May at the moment."

She'd been desperately waiting for him to wake up these past three days hoping she'd saved him with her powers, which she was required she had done. There was a moments hesitation as she correctly guessed.

"He blames himself doesn't he?"

"Yeah." He nodded. "But I came to tell you that and see how you were, with... You know."

He pointed down to the blanket covering her legs. But now she only had one and a half legs. Because her lower left leg had been amputated.

Helen Cho was an incredible doctor, using a newly made cradle she was able to fix (Y/N)'s broken bones and bruised body parts. But injuries related to mutant powers were something still being researched, and so she hadn't been able to save (Y/N)'s leg.

What had happened was when she used her powers (Y/N) used some of her blood, the price she essentially paid to heal someone. And she had never healed a wound as large as the one Peter suffered from the fall. So it was a stifle and she used too much if her own blood, starving her limbs of oxygen. All her other limbs had been able to make it, except the one.

"My leg? Well what's left of my leg, it's fine, I guess. Dr Cho healed the surgery stitches pretty well so it doesn't hurt and I've been given some pain meds. What hurts the mist is when I try to stand up and walk, forget I don't have both legs, and fall flat on my face."

Her attempted to take a positive view of the fact she had lost half a limb wasn't very successful which she noticed.

"It's not your fault. I chose to heal Peter."

"No I'm just the guy who encouraged you to fight mass criminals and gave you a suit to do so."

"Yeah, and it was my choice to go out and fight them. I could have said no but I didn't. That and if I hadn't been wearing the suit you gave I probably would have died."

Dr Cho had informed (Y/N) that the suit Tony had made her was designed for endurance, and was able to take some of the impact of blows she had received.

"Yeah sure." He refused to deny both kids being hurt was his fault. "And what about your dads? Have they said anything?"

The past couple of days had been hard for the small family. Her dads had been there as soon as she regained consciousness, slowly telling her she'd lost her leg during the explosion. (Y/N) hadn't said anything because she knew her dad would know she was lying. And so she truthfully said she didn't want to talk about it.

And in terms of her attitude towards loosing her leg, she was simply counting her lucky stars that she wasn't dead. Whilst under the rubble healing Peter she was convinced that that would be where she died. She could feel her body growing cold and now mob inch by inch thinking that this is what it meant to die.

So when she'd woken up, being met with the friendly face of Tony and later the loving faces of her dads, her leg didn't mean that much to her. She was alive and would be here to help Peter, and that's all that mattered to her.

"My dad knows that you were lying about some bits and pieces when you told him the cover story. But surprisingly he's respected my right to privacy and hasn't pushed the matter, and I think the only reason he's not pressing the matter is because you saved my life. He knows I used my powers to save Pete but none if the Panacea stuff."

"Okay, I can live with that. And what did they say about your leg?"

"They're like me, they're just happy I'm alive. Besides limbs can be replaced. My dads already looking up prices for protestic limbs, seeing if we'll have a enough to afford one. And can I ask?"

"Hmm?"

"Why did you call me to the facility when you first found out about me?"

"Well at fist it was curiosity, you know, wanted to see with my own eyes if Peter really did like you. But then I caught onto a rumor, one I needed to confirm."

"And what rumor was that?" she asked although she already knew.

"That you were a mutant."

"That I was a mutant and that I was dangerous?"

"No the exact opposite. We're not exactly a normal bunch around here, and I know your old school because those assholes couldn't stand those very impressive wings. So I wanted to help a buddy of Peter's and offer you a place you could feel normal. As there aren't many places you can physically stretch your wings."

"Why though?"

"Geez I hate that question, why can't people just be happy when I'm nice? But if you want another answer other than you're Peter's friend now girlfriend, to ease my conscience. And I'm going to further ease my conscience by making you a kick ass bespoke leg."

"You would?"

"Sure." He shrugged "I think I'll give T'Challa a ring, see if he's got and spare vibranium kicking about I could use."

"Vibranium?"

"The strongest and rarest metal on earth."

"What!?"

"Hey boss." Happy greeted coming up to the pair.

"Hello Happy, how very irresponsible of you to take your eyes off a patient."

"Come on I was showing the kid around, you were the same in hospital. As soon as he was able he was out if his bed in a wheelchair seeing if he could propel himself with a fire extinguisher."

"Can I give that a go!?" (Y/N) laughed at the story.

"Sure you can these an extinguisher right down the hall. But I think you'd best say hello to another patient first."

"I'll take her." Happy offers led grabbing the handles if the chair.

"Right, see you later kid." Tony headed the way.

"Hey Tony?"

"Yes?" He turned back "and brownie point for using my actual name."

"Thanks for everything."

Those three simple words seemed to ease Tony slightly, glad that he hadn't messed up these kids life's entirely. Smiling to himself he went off leaving (Y/N). Also having somewhere else she needed to be.

"Thanks. He needed that."

"I know he did."

Happy then lightly jogged (Y/N) back to her room helping her hop back into bed just in time for Dr Cho's regular check ups. The pair sneaking small smiles like troublesome children.

But the fun was quickly over as (Y/N) was once again stick in her room, when the very thing she wanted to do right now was fun to Peter's side knowing he was hurting. And she didn't need to he an empath like her dad to know that. He blamed himself for Norman's death and being the human he is would se any loss of life as a tragedy, and would therefore feel guilty about Gargan's death.

With all of that she was considering trying to hide the loss of her leg for as long as possible. Thankfully her boredom was ended when her dads visited as they had done for the past days. And as usual Maurice brought food in the bag fulls.

"I baked you your favourite cookies and we brought you some lunch and I made you some soup too."

"Dad they've got food here." She chuckled lightly.

"I know that, but it's a parents duty to make food for their kid when they're sick."

She managed a small bit in thanks, her mind being otherwise largely occupied.

"I know it's easy to say but stop worrying about Peter. We all know he's safe and healthy thanks to you." Silas said suddenly.

"Dad?"

"Yes sweetheart?"

"Am I allowed to be happy?"

"What kind of question is that? Of course you're allowed to he happy."

"But so much has happened. The Goblin, Scorpion and Norman are dead. The top of Avengers tower is gone. I've lost my leg. And Peter's blaming himself for Norman's death. I feel like I'm not allowed to be happy when I know he's so sad."

"Now let me tell you this right now." Silas took her hand "you're always allowed to be happy, even if ones you love aren't. It just means you've got to help them be happy again. Okay? After all, what's the British saying?"

"Stiff up a lip."

"Exactly. Sweetie a few people are gong to be in pain for a while, and it's going to take for things to get back to normal. But they might not even go back to normal, they might he chants forever now. And that's okay, okay?"

"Okay." She timidly smiled.

After that her dads stayed for a few more hours, the conversation of prothstetic limbs leading to Tony's promise for a bespoke vibranium leg. But when Dr Cho came or another check up her dads had to leave, but Dr Cho then told her that bus might be a good time to see Peter as May had just left too.

So pulling herself back into her wheelchair she made her way to the room down the hall, hesitating to enter. But with a little struggle she was able to open the door and wheel herself in. Getting into the room she found it adorable how Peter was snuggled up under his blanket, and she could tell he's been crying. A lot.

Pushing over to the bed she was able to take w seat in the bed, covering her legs with the blanket she brought. She had shaken the bed a little causing Peter to stir, grumbling he bolted right up seeing (Y/N).

"(Y/N)! Oh my God are you okay!?"

"Don't worry I'm fine." She reassured him as he locked her in hug.

"Tony would only tell me you were alive, I thought something really bad had happened to you."

"I'm fine and I'm alive, so that's all that matters."

Peter held her close, almost afraid it were a dream. He started to shake a little and (Y/N) could tell he was trying not to cry.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."

"You have nothing to be sorry for."

"Yes I do, I ruined our first date."

They both have a single breathy chuckle at that.

"Well there's other times." They faced each other "we can do it again, heck it could even be the same movie as I want to see them take down Poppy."

"Yeah...."

The room fell silent.

"Pete."

"Yeah?"

"I need to tell you something, and you have to promise me, one bit to freak out and two, not to blame yourself."

He gave a shaky nod, and (YlN) braced herself. Pulling off the blanket and then her trouser leg she revealed that her left leg now cit off with a bandage below her knee. Peter gave a shaky breath backing away a little.

"Peter-

"You can't be around me anymore."

"No, listen-

"It's my fault! It's all my fault! It's my fault that Norman and Gargan became the Goblin and Scorpion! It's my fault they're dead! It's my fault Harry's list his dad at the age 16 and now it's my fault you been hurt like this!"

"They chose to be criminals Peter, just like I chose to be Panacea and help you! I chose to heal you and that's why my legs gone!"

She got closer and he didn't complain as she hugged him sideways.

"I chose to heal you, I knew the risks, I lost my leg because I starved my limbs of oxygen using my powers. So it's not your fault."

"But Norman..."

"I'm sorry Peter Norman made his choice and so did-

"No you don't understand. Gargan became the Scorpion because I got him arrested and Norman became the Goblin because I destroyed his companies work."

"Yes you may have done those things, but it was still their choice to break the law, but they didn't. You are not responsible for their actions or their deaths."

"But the whole world thinks the Goblin killed Norman when it was me! And everyone will remember Gargan as a criminal never knowing he tried to save us! And you greatly died!"

She took his hand on hers.

"Tell me what you feel."

"(Y/N)-

"What do you feel?"

"Well... Warmth, a hand, skin."

"Alive, I'm alive. And so are you. Yes there are people who are gone now, and j can't promise you this will all go away, heck I can't even promise that everything will eventually go back to normal. But what I can tell you is that this will all take time, it's okay if you didn't do all you could and it's okay to feel guilty as long as it doesn't take over your life. And I can promise you, that I will be with you, every step of the way. Peter I'm Panacea, goddess of health, its my job, to help you recover."
